Like you say you can jump over it (or just pin him at the left side where there's a convenient platform that isn't even in range of it)
Anyway I was killed twice by it and both times it was when using Ice Cream Pops (w/ alch, 3000 hp) to heal. For some reason, even though his attacks only do up to about 2000 damage (visibly anyway). Even after poison ticked twice (2400) I should be able to survive. But I was killed almost immediately after the 1/1-poison.
I switched to using Cheese after his 1/1s (when I got hit) and it was no longer a problem so iono.
