In many cases, the chef is being paid for consistently providing what the menu advertises. If he/she doesn't they are dismissed and another is found that can. They expect to be paid well for what they do. Waiters and waitresses get paid a certain amount knowing if they do on par or more than they will get a tip. Some places pool all the tips and divide it at each days close with everyone. I'm against this as it doesn't allow one to be rewarded for excellence.
When buying a ticket you don't directly pay money to the actor's but you do indirectly by supporting the success of the show. This contributes to the fame of that actor and subsequently to the rise of they paycheck in their next movie.
Now to your original theme of this post... it appears you might be a bit disconnected from society. An extreme example might be the main character of "Dexter" a showtime series. On a milder level you might be just needing someone to share your thoughts and dreams with that can relate to your way of thinking.
I'm hoping for Dexter... as his character is so freakin' fascinating! Not that I promote serial killers in any way, it's just so cool how he's coped with making his way of life more acceptable to society. He doesn't have feelings to speak of. If someone is hurt or dies he doesn't care. He's a statue that watches the play unfold around him. But he has learned to fake his feelings. Learned to make sure no one notices him. He lives by a code of conduct of killing only those that deserve death. You gotta respect that. He plays god... he does him very well I think at least he's consistent.
