OK. I have the definite idea, I guess. All AP not used at all, are lost.
HOWEVER. When you use AP into hp and mp, the game does the calculation, and it thinks...
"UHM... STR, DEX, INT, LUK aren't what it supposedly had to... Therefore, it should have had something into HP/MP"
When you loose AP after the 255 limit, you see the game thinking...

See my point? The game tricks itself. Specially since it's the best way to keep track of HP, and why hp wash is possible.
