You don't have to collect every single treasure and item to beat I dunno, Tales of Symphonia. Well, you could argue that you don't have to play it or get past the beginning at all, but then you're missing out on the story and the gameplay, and from there you go into a "well isn't everything a waste of time then" argument. The main content of the game is to play through the storyline, and everything else is just to provide distractions to enhance replay value and overall gameplay experience.
The main content of MapleStory is the killing monsters, and the party quests. I'm not saying "who cares it's just monster book," because obviously a lot of you guys do care, but my first post was just to question Isaac's analogy, in which he compared messing up your monster book to messing up your skills.
Ah, but my point is that you level for that stuff. Rendering the goal useless/glitched is what makes people angry. Imagine the quests suddenly lost all text, with you still letting to complete them via quest helper. Few people would care, but there'd still be people wanting to know the stuff said.
My other point is: every part makes the whole. Start screwing with a part, as small as it can be, and you are screwing the whole. Why say it's a worthless thing, when other people can say the same of other stuff? It's not as important as skills, because cards don't drop as attacks are used, but you can't deny it's a good incentive for most people. And the goal of reaching further only changes in variety of where to hunt, nothing else. Only bosses make a little twist, but not much more. In fact, outleveling pqs is loosing content...
