Another idea if you have errors that chkdsk can't resolve, is to find what brand of hard drive you have, and download a diagnostic utility from the manufacturer's web site. These are generally free tools that you will burn to a bootable CD so they can run without interference from anything else. They can do a thorough scan of the drive and let you know if there are current problems or any alarms about impending ones.
