alpha layers! what are alpha layers?

have been reading things that talk about alpha layers.. but still don't know what they do!

those two are very pretty, the fire+rose image is a lovely idea.

Alpha layers are the invisible spots - ie, if there is a layer behind something, only spots that are alpha will allow you to see it. Think of it as "clear" or "see-through"

Gimp has a tool called "color to alpha" that replaces every pixel of a selected color with a "clear" or alpha pixel that allows you to view the layers behind it. I did this with parts of the rose to leave only the red/orange that blends it with the fire.
