I can honestly say I'm guilty of using the word from time to time, but never in reference of a homosexual.
The way I use the word is more of a harmless, playful jest towards a friend or co-worker.
I think its a word that's meaning and intention is defined by the user. Never have I used the word towards a homosexual, and yes I do know a few people that are admitted homosexual's.
pineapple and pomegranate are pretty much set in stone. Their meanings don't really vary based on the usage. "The word in question", IMO, can be used in a harmless way or be offensive. It just depends on how it's said and to whom it's said.
