I don't really recommend it, damage penalty is still high (A fusion mace will do about 80% the damage of the 25 2h sword)
Just because displayed range is better doesn't mean overall it is ok. 1h maces use 4.4 swing 3.4 stab - so 40% of the time they are stuck in the bottom 3/4 of the damage range, while the sword will always hit the full range.
And 30 vs. 45 min damage won't show up as significant so you might not think of it right away.
Eg. 30-289 fusion vs. 41-324 broadsword. It doesn't look like a big advanatge - but 40% of the time the Fusion mace does 30-214.
