But I'm pretty sure it's going to drop off a cliff in sales again though and never come up again for 6 months until smash bros launches, where the process will repeat with a minor blip in sales and then nothing again.
That's what happens when you have no software (only game of any note in the next 2 months is an eshop game which is just a sequel to a 3ds eshop game, pushmo). Then maybe hyrule warriors in august (that's when it launches in Japan). Then nothing until smash bros. A couple of days of momentum means nothing if you can't carry it with other software, which is impossible for any one company to do.
tldr: it's still never going to even get close to gamecube sales. Hell, I'm still not sure it can reach dreamcast sales.
While I see your point, there are a few facts that we need to consider, Mario kart 8 sold 1.2m in 3 days, so, when the week is over we are really going to know how good it's launch is, but right now the numbers are outstanding for a console with only 7m units sold.
The club nintendo offer for the free game lasts 2 months and I know a lot of people that are now planing to get a Wii u because of that promo.
In Japan, there will be various games until Smash is released, so momentum won't be lost there, now the Americas and Europe will have a problem if hyrule warriors and Bayo 2 don't get released in a similar time to japan.
Also there are 4 unannounced games from nintendo (From twitch schedule), I know that we already know about some games that are in the works, like X, FireXMegamitensei and Zelda but that doesn't mean that there isn't going to be new ones. Also, some people expect MH4U to be announced fo Wii U. And there are other companies that are developing some Wii U games and looks like we will get the next Call of Duty... So, maybe we are not that screwed.
It's all up to the E3 now, If nintendo manages to get some games to release before Smash or lure sales with a business move (price cut, new wii u bundles, etc.), then Wii U will be saved, remember that what saved 3DS was Mario kart 7 + a price cut.
