At first I was hesitant when seeing screen shots of the Legoesque blocks on maps but it actually looks okay with the gameplay video. Still, I'm going to miss all the artwork that make MS1 so appealing and wish they would have incorporated some of that at least in the background. It's clear where they want to head with this and it looks more like a console game than a computer game (a la Sunshine Mario or whatever it was called for the Wii).
As an FYI, you're thinking of Mario Galaxy.
Now that we've seen a gameplay video, I don't see any reason both MS1 and MS2 can't thrive together, al la Ragnarok Online. Granted, Ragnarok Online 2 is terrible, but that's not really the point. MS1 can still get updates, as long as Nexon still gets money for it, and considering how much people have dumped into it at this point they probably won't be losing their userbase any time soon because of [I forget the name, but it's the mental thought that since you've already paid for something, you'd mind as well keep using it even if you don't like it]. They can be separate games, in the same vein, and both survive.

The reason why I initially didn't even respond to the free2play video myself is that no matter how good of an idea it is, I doubt any current company that is doing it wrong is going to just change their ways because some random guys (regardless of popularity) made a decent point on a video (if the company even saw it as a decent point).
We can hope aspiring developers see it and think it's a good point, but really that's about it.
