Pretty much this. I've tried to play some 3D MMOs, but I'm way too spoiled on Maple's charmingly cartoony and simple graphics and gameplay to get into them. Most 3D, free to play MMOs just have really clunky and annoying gameplay.
If I were to find a 2D or 2.5D MMO that played more like Castlevania or Mega Man, however, I'd probably play it to an unhealthy degree.
