And that's the problem, using gender as an insult should not be a thing. A man is insulted when he is told that he is acting like a girl. Apparently showing emotion is a bad thing, and apparently so is taking on the traits of a woman because, in both cases, it shows signs of weakness. This is also why it's insulting to women, because it implies that being feminine is bad and it makes you weak.
So you're right, it's insulting to everyone, but not everyone is insulted by it for the same reason.
(To clarify, I wasn't arguing against you, I'm elaborating on your point.)
