For a robot boss fight, it makes sense. For the rest of us real critters, we'd pull off more desperate measures if we saw our own demise coming.

For a robot, pieces would be damaged, resulting in a weaker form. Organic forms follow the same pattern O.o - Lose an arm, lose potential to harm someone. Loss of blood also fatigues and damages the senses. Head trauma makes for poor thinking ability and lack of good judgement, as well as delayed reactions. So in both cases, a weakening boss would make more sense, contrary to most multi-form bosses in most video games.
