Multiple languages, differences in content, differences in functionality. Telling them all they can't continue their development path for the next three years while you rewrite it from the ground up is not an option. At that point, that's called MapleStory 2 and there's a reason that has it's own team and is completely separate. "Gradual" requires exactly what I said; maintaining and working in two (or more) completely different codebases simultaneously. You are oversimplifying to the point of idiocy. Let it go, it's not going to happen.
The only really difficult thing here is language difference and this potentially being on a worldwide scale, I agree to that. But everything else is plausible. Maybe I am oversimplifying, but no one said that it would be set in stone that EVERY version needs to be replaced. I'm mainly talking about GMS becoming completely standalone. If we're talking about only within the realm of GMS, this is completely doable. New events/areas/updates specific only to said region would be the norm, less hacking activity if it's more secure/up-to-date code-wise and data-wise, glitches being fixed on a timely basis. You know, GMS is quite 'standalone' already with Jett, nebulites, masteria being first implemented there. No reason to think it can't stand on its own.
