Well, I've really been looking into this stuffs (Personally I dont know why but it entertains me).

Defined by Wikipedia:
A paradox can be an apparently true statement or group of statements that leads to a contradiction or a situation which defies intuition; or it can be, seemingly opposite, an apparent contradiction that actually expresses a non-dual truth (cf. Koan). Typically, either the statements in question do not really imply the contradiction, the puzzling result is not really a contradiction, or the premises themselves are not all really true or cannot all be true together. The word paradox is often used interchangeably with contradiction. Often, mistakenly, it is used to describe situations that are ironic.

In other words, a paradox is a statement that implies something, but at the same time contradicts itself.

Let me show you one, this one is famous:

Barber paradox:

The paradox states that in a town, there is a male barber that shaves everyone who does not shave himself.

But, here comes the situation:
  • If the barber doesnt shave himself, he needs to abide the rules and do so.
  • If the barber does want to shave himself, he needs to abide the rules and not do so.

What do you guys think? Biggrin

If you guys found this entertaining, might wanna come up with your own paradoxes in this thread. Or discuss the one I just gave you.

Have fun. Biggrin

Nothing is impossible: that means something being impossible would be possible!

I personally like the Grandfather paradox, where this one dude wants to kill his grandpa for some reason and goes back in time, but if he kills the grandpa when he's young, then he wouldn't be alive and therefore couldn't kill the grandpa in the first place...

Ionno ^^^^ my crappy explanation =D

This is more of an oxymoron than a paradox. Sorta like jumbo shrimp, same difference... and

To be quite literal:

I can't think of any paradoxes, mainly because I don't like them =]

The statement below is true
The statement above is false

That kind of stuff?

Paradoxes - bored4ever86 - 2008-07-13

or the simplest one of all: "True or False: This statement is false."

If the statement is true then it must mean that the statement is false which you already deemed it true, and if its false then the statement must be true in order to satisfy the statement....

if god can do anything, then he can create a rock so big and heavy that he cant lift, but if he can do anything so he CAN lift it.
so god cant do anything cuz he can create something he cant lift, cuz if he could then he couldnt lift - therefore, he still cant do anything.

one of the oldest paradoxes.

You go back in time thanks to the time machine your grandfather invented. So you go back in time to thank him in person. You go back to where he didn't invent it yet, so you find him, and start to talk to him. You tell him about his time machine, but he didn't know about it yet. You come back, but your grandfather can't take the idea out of his mind, so he decides to start to build a time machine...

How did the time machine come to be?

Like back to the Future?
