If you aren't up to speed on it, Cali is practically a pineapple hole now since the democrats are not willing to lower the spending in the state, but are more than willing to raise taxes on its people, when in fact we already have the highest taxes in many categories. The idea was raised in my poly-sci class that it may be best for California to scrap the current constitution and write a new one in order to fix many of the problems we are having.
What do you think? Should we write a new constitution? Should we fire all the assembly men and women and re elect? or something else?

I'm no expert at economics, but I think California should just cut some of its education spending; the state spends a LOT more per student then most other states. :f6:

What I do remember reading is that California teachers have some of the highest wages in the country. However, considering that California is ranked somewhere near the very bottom in terms of education, I hardly think that's where we need to be pulling money from.
In response to the OP: honestly, I don't know nearly enough about politics or economics to have an informed opinion in any case. All I know is that my fiance wants us to move to Canada.

No. California's public education system has already had its budget cut so much, it's ridiculous.

As for the topic at hand...probably yes. The way California's government is set up, it just seems doomed to fail at some point. I'd really like to see a change...something better than what we have now plz. >_.

They are taking too much from schools. Normally I would be happy since, well, they are talking about going to school less. However, my dilema is that my dad is a teacher. I don't want him to get paid less. I think we should just cut spending somewhere else. Our taxes and everything are already insane as it is.

I don't know the California constitution, but I don't think putting a limit on taxation or spending belongs there. Constitutions are for lofty principles, not for nitty-gritty details like "State income tax shall not exceed X%".
I also am not familiar with Californian politics, but I assume this policy of high spending and high taxes isn't something that's popped out of the blue. The people of California voted the Democrats into the Assembly, knowing their opinions and policies. If they don't like what is going on, they should vote for other people next time.
What might get put into the Constitution, if it isn't there already, is a way for the people to call for new elections before their due date. By overwhelming majority, of course. You do not want to go through the whole (costly!) process of elections every time the state government's approval ratings drop below 50%. Especially since the same people would probably get elected again, as many of those complaining are not going to vote (or will vote for the same person because the alternative is even worse).

im just gonna respond to a few thoughts being passed around X_X
the teachers in California are the highest paid by average in the US, so its crazy to sit and say, "theyre cutting so much from the schools" also, we have the highest fail/drop out rate in the nation, due to the fact that the "no child left behind" act actually hurts more since some students who may actually need help, are losing that help to those who dont even want to be there or be bothered with school in the first place (a good bunch of which are either illegals, or children of illegals). So I believe teachers pay should be based on their students overall performance, that way teachers would be more bothered to say "ya know what, get the hell out of my class if you are going to waste my time" to those that do waste their time.

So you're saying that kids should be encouraged to drop out? I understand that there are many underachieving students that don't really care about school, but I doubt that encouraging them to just stop attending high school is wise.

And on the budget crisis- the solution is to fire all the representatives. Easy. Referendum by the California voters:
Be it enacted, that if the Californian legislature does not pass a budget by the given deadline (insert reasonable deadline here), all legislators will be removed from office and will not be allowed to hold state office again.

i wouldnt mind them all being thrown out <_< democrats seem to be pineappling everything these days.
as for the kids, it shouldn't encourage them if they are being told they are not worth the effort, most kids might see this as a "hey, wheres my love?" kind of situation, and might be encouraged more to try better.
