People who directly abused it are telling me they were not banned and still have their items.
scratch that, exploiters were banned, traded items were not removed

I'm expecting their solution to have been a band-aid on a severed limb - they changed the selectable cube box to not work anymore (or straight up removed the item from peoples' inventories), but the underlying method is still untouched. I just hope they plan to have a real solution eventually.
