Unless it specifically says it does NOT destroy the item, why would you risk it?.. we've even had this problem several times before. >_> I'm not saying it's your fault, but they miss this stuff constantly, always best to just wait it out and let someone else find out the hard way.

No it is partly my fault, it just wasn't apparent in my mind because its never happened to me before and I had only read about things like this happening years ago.

Either use a lot of nx on coins (in case you lose, you can keep your wins for a set amount of coins) or get hella lucky.
