MapleStory Ban Definitions and Durations:

Hacking
All hacking will result in a permanent ban of the account.
Botting – Tiered Penalties

Misconduct –
Behavior / Language – Tiered Penalties
Verbal Warning

Permanent Ban – For extremely offensive and uncontrollable players
GM Disrespect – To be used in conjunction with other violations to determine severity.
Bad Names – All inappropriate names will be required to have a name change. Ban durations are broken down based on the severity of the inappropriateness as indicated in the Terms of Use:
Permanent Bans
Impersonations – Impersonating someone else, including, without limitation, another user, Non Playing Character or Game Master ("GM").
28 Days Suspensions (7 Days x 4)
Offensive Names – Contains vulgar, defamatory, obscene, hateful, racially, ethnically or otherwise offensive, including any usernames which are sexual in nature.
Crime-Affiliated Names - Comprised of or includes the names (including "street" names) of any drug, narcotic or other criminal activity.
ASCII Character Names – Includes any special characters (i.e., ASCII codes)
Copyright or Trademark Infringements - Is or may be illegal or is or may be protected by trademark or other proprietary rights laws, or may cause confusion.
Gibberish Names – Comprised of or includes gibberish (e.g., "Akdnvprq")
Guild Names – Ban duration is determined based on the severity of the inappropriateness of the name as listed above.
Pet Names – Ban duration is determined based on the severity of the inappropriateness of the name as listed above.
Inappropriate Shop Names
MapleStory Hired Merchant – Name change
Personal Shop Name – Disconnect the player
Benefit Hacking – Taking advantage of a hacker’s exploit.
Partying or making use of hackers – Tiered Penalties

Inciting Inflammatory Behavior on Forums – 7 days / 30 days / Permanent Ban
Disruptive Behavior on Forums – 7 days ban for the first offense, second offense, and third offense / Permanent Ban TBD on a case by case basis

NOTE: “Funny” reports in excess start with a 1 day ban and a warning. If we investigate these and find evidence that will prove the player did in fact create a false report, we will then further take action.

For Tickets – Action will be taken solely in-game except for the permanent ban, which will take place in-game and in the ticketing system.

For Forums – Action will be taken solely on the forums. However, depending on the severity of the violation, a request may be made to take action in-game as well.

Please note, that this is simply a guideline. Final ban duration decisions may differ from the posted durations in this article.

I really had no idea every time I said my name to a new buddy or in a new guild I was at risk of being banned. Some of these are kind of silly. "Warned and educated," I can see meaning private information but a first name, which might even just be an online alias? Come on.

IIRC, they always had that rule but they never really do anything about it. They only do something about it if it's actually offensive.

Day one of Demon Avenger, I encountered someone with an inappropriate guild name. Someone must have hacked the filter though, because there couldn't possibly be a filter that allowed this-

I took the character name out, but that's the only edit. I seriously ran across that guild name on GAZED and, had I not seen this game hacked a thousand times before, would have been amazed that someone had pulled it off.
