it was kinda obvious from the moment she ran into the fence and felt around the broken boards at the opening of the hole, and was further cemented when you realize that is her seeing eye dog. the whale bit lost me for a bit actually, but the animators redeemed that by having her cup her ears.

I think sound plays a decent part in this animation. Everything "appears" with the resonance of sound.
