Understanding Gunslingers and Skill Builds
This guide is co-authored by Takebacker and KazooTheBat.
Hello! Welcome to The Comprehensive Guide to Gunslingers. Because of the numerous attempts at Gunslinger guides on several Maple forums, and their tendency to present conflicting info, the two of us have decided to take matters into our own hands and create the most complete, detailed, and informative Gunslinger guide around.

The AP Build
Gunslingers are similar to archers in that their primary stat is DEX and their secondary stat is STR. Your STR must be equal to your level to wear equips. Maintaining correct AP stats isn't hard for a Gunslinger; just make sure your total STR [base + equips] is equal to your level at all times, and put the rest into DEX [i.e. adding 1 STR/4 DEX every lvl in a reg STR build].
Equipment
Spoiler
Pirates have both the option of a high level overall, as well as a common top+bottom combo as a source of str, dex, or both. Top+bottoms are generally pretty rare and often expensive, but the reality is that they are much more potent in terms of total stats than an overall. A top+bottom combo allows for much lower base str, as neither equipment require a high amount of str like the high level pirate overalls. If you can find both pairs, a top+bottom combo is recommended over an overall. A lot of people also ask about bullets, like how to find them, how expensive they might be, etc. I'll address those issues here.
First off, bullets come in sets and are rechargeable, just like stars. And just like Claw Mastery, Gun Mastery increases the amount of bullets you can carry in a set. Unlike stars, bullets have level requirements and carry much more in a set by default [1200+ per set for lvl 30 bullets, and 3000+ for lvl 110 bullets]. They're available in 20-level increments starting at 10, as in there are lvl 10 bullets, then lvl 30, lvl 50, all the way up to lvl 110. Lvl 10 bullets are sold in all potion shops, and each advancing bullet drops from at least one monster that is commonly trained on [i.e. wild boars, v/hoodoos, duals]. Gunslingers are a low-populated class in other versions, so bullet prices should fall fairly low in GMS over time. Also note that Blaze/Glaze capsules are bullets that are only usable with Fire Burner and Cooling Effect respectively, and that even then the capsules are optional [the elemental skills can be used w/o capsules, but they lose half their attack power]. The following links show descriptions and images of Gunslinger equipment:
Miscellaneous Numbers
Standard Octopus Summoning Limit [Lvl 1-10] = 1 at a time
Standard Octopus Summoning Limit [Lvl 11-20]= 2 at a time
Standard Octopus Summoning Limit [Lvl 21-30] = 2 at a time
Support Octopus Summoning Limit [Lvl 1+] = 3 at a time
DPS Comparisons
[Format: (Damage % * # of hits) / Time it takes to cast in seconds = total Damage Per Second]
Rapid 05 is the min. level where Rapid Fire's DPS outperforms Triple Fire's DPS. In the recent balance patch, rapid fire's table is tweaked so rapid fire out damages burst fire at level 1.
Triple 20 always outperforms Invis 30. Pretty straightforward, since they both hit 3 times max and 210% > 170%.
Burner 30 is only worth using over Triple on mobs of 4 or more, and then only in combination with another skill.
When 3-mobbing, max Invis always yields higher DPS than max Burner alone, even with elemental advantage.
When 3-mobbing, max Burner has higher DPS than max Invis only if it is alternated with another skill [Triple 20, Cooling 26, or Fake 30].
When 6-mobbing, or using attack-like-a-bandit method in general, the best combo to use is Burner 30 + Cooling 26.
If you don't have high level Cooling, or don't want to carry glaze capsules, then the next best is Burner 30 + Triple 20.
[huge thanks to sapphire8 for the DPS calculations ]
Advancing to 1st Job
Once you hit level 10 as a Beginner, go to lith harbor and talk to the pirate statue to the far right of the map. It's pretty hard to miss. It will teleport you to kyrins room in the nautilus, allowing you to advance without having to really go anywhere.
Gun-Pirate's Outset
The build in first job is fairly simple as the skills are easy to prioritize. Naturally, it's your story so you can do whatever you choose. The first build we present is the traditional 1st Job build, while the second gives up a Gunner fighting style for maximized training efficiency.
SSK-First Build
10-16: Somersault Kick
17: +1 Somersault Kick & +2 Dash
18-19: Dash
20: +2 Dash (MAX) & +1 Bullet Time
21-23: Bullet Time
24: +1 Bullet Time (11) & +2 Double Fire
25-30: Double Fire (MAX)
Skill Distribution at Lvl 30: 61 Points Total
20/20 Somersault Kick [MAX]
10/10 Dash [MAX]
11/20 Bullet Time
20/20 Double Shot [MAX]
Build Explanations
Spoiler
It's pretty straightforward in first job: max your only attack first and then work on the skill that gives you speed. Remember that Dash can be activated by double-tapping the left or right arrow key, and that it's deactivated if you change directions or stand still for too long. Quick Motion is maxed third. Somersault kick is added last, and left at 11. Since a Gunner's main stat is DEX, the acc and avoid boosts from Quick Motion are minimal and unnecessary in comparison. As the balance patch has made it so guns NEVER whack, somersault kick is useless in pretty much every situation.
The SSK-first build aims to optimize leveling speed via mobbing. It can be left at 11 or maxed, but if you plan to give up toting a gun in favor of acrobatic mobbing, it's recommended to go the distance and max out SSK completely. Those who follows this build are advised to equip high-weapon attack items, i.e. a warrior weapon like a spear as your weapon of choice. Russt coined the term "Spearslinger" for players who favor SSK first. If you go this build, you can set Double Fire aside to be maxed later on, or even last.
Even after the balance patch, maxing SSK is important, as it will speed up your 2nd job training especially once you hit subway PQ as you don't have any other mob skill. It's very easy to get 60% per PQ if you have a mobbing move.
The 2nd Job Advancement
Once you're level 30, go see Kairin. After clicking the "Tell me more about Pirates" option, she'll send you to a special map where you'll be tested for your 2nd Job. You'll have to kill the octopi that are scattered about and collect 15 black crystals to bring back to Kairin. But remember, you can only use Double Fire to hurt the octopi. All other attacks automatically miss. Once you've collected 15 crystals, exit the map and talk to Kairin to advance to Gunslinger.
First point goes into Invis Shot to take advantage of its 3 monster hits, which will almost entirely replace Double Fire as your main attack while training. Then max Mastery to receive a much-needed boost to your low minimum damage and increase your bullet capacity (very important). Next it's max Invis Shot, which powers up your ability to mob-attack 3 monsters with terrific vertical range. Next, raise Booster to 6. Booster at 60 seconds will significantly increase your Invis Shot firing speed, more so than with Double Fire, and it allows you to train faster overall. Keep in mind that damage is more important than speed, which is why 6 Booster comes after max Mastery and max Invis. After that comes a boost of mobility from 5 Wings and max Recoil Shot, which acts like a nerfed version of Hermits' Flash Jump. Unlike FJ, Recoil is an attack (deals 260% damage), it can't be spammed (1ish second cooldown), and it shoots you backward instead of forward (hence the name). Wings is then finished off for added mobility, since the Recoil Shot/Wings combo is a great way to travel quickly and it's pretty fun to use. Blank Shot is maxed afterward in order to provide you with a stun skill, which can be used alone or as a combo with Invis against 3 monsters. Booster comes after. Once you max Booster, Grenade is the only skill left, but since it's obsolete and useless compared to other mobbing options, your next 9 points will go to maxing Bullet Time for that 9 extra avoid. A permanent stat boost will help you more than a skill that has no uses. Grenade is the lowest priority 2nd job skill, since it needs good aiming ability to work decently, has no range unless the key is held down (preventing Bomb from being spammable), and isn't affected by mastery or the attack from your bullets. It's more efficient to stun with Blank Shot and spam Invis Shot.
The 3rd Job Advancement
Once you're level 70, go see Pedro [the 3rd Job Pirate instructor] in El Nath. The procedure is the same as other 3rd Jobs [quiz and boss fight with the 1st Job Instructor]. The Door of Dimension is in Cave of Evil Eye II in the Ant Tunnel.
Outlaw's Tricks
This is where things get tricky. Options for builds here are very broad, and for this reason, we originally presented you with two similar builds and one that was vastly different. But because of CWK part 2's release and the many suggestions we got from other Outlaws and Corsairs, i decided to standardize everything into one solid, all-encompassing build.
All builds start with maxing Burst Fire, which should always be first because it's much stronger than max Double Fire, even at level 1. Its damage is consistently high and serves as your main attack until 4th Job.
Next, 1 point is slapped on Gaviota because it's half as strong as it is at level 30, so it's really worth that 1 point. Many Outlaws have told us about the usefulness of lvl 1 Gaviota, which we highly underestimated, even though anything over level 16 is a huge waste of points. Gaviota is one of few skills that have no cast time whatsoever. You can cast it in the middle of a burst fire, so your damage only goes up by casting it. However this becomes futile later on, as gaviota won't change your HKO at all. Splitter is maxed afterward because it's a great mob-control move and it freezes. This is amazing at the windraider maps. Flamethrower is placed after Splitter so you can use the Splitter/Flamethrower mobbing combo. 1 Homing Beacon is added at 105 simply for its advantage in fighting bosses. Gaviota and Homing Beacon are the lowest skills on the importance scale, which is why they're maxed last. Gaviota only offers minimal assistance while bossing, but the extra damage still makes Gaviota worth using at jr. newties among other places.
Some may question why FT is left at 26 instead of maxed, while IS is maxed. The 4 points both add very little amounts of damage to each skill, with flamethrower getting more out of the 4 points. Why IS is maxed is because while the extra damage may not do anything towards HKO, you'll use it your entire career anyway. FT isn't used as much.
Advancing to 4th Job
To get your 4th job advancement, first head over to El Nath to talk to Pedro [the 3rd job instructor] and then go to "Leafre: Valley of the Antelope". At the very top-right of that map there's a wooden treehouse-like structure. Head inside to see Samuel, the 4th Job Pirate Instructor. He'll ask you to get two items: the Heroic Star and the Heroic Pentagon. To get these two items, you have to either:
Kill Griffey for a chance to obtain the Heroic Star and kill Manon for a chance to obtain the Heroic Pentagon.
Give a Secret Spell Scroll to Chief Tatamo of Leafre and he will give you the 2 items.
[Note: To get the scroll, you have to buy it from Vega in the 44th floor of the Eos Tower for 10mil.]
After you get these two items, go back to see Samuel. You'll be rewarded with 4th job, a Maple Hero skill book, and 5 AP/3 SP as a mark of your advancement.
Corsair's Honor
Naturally, we all know that there's always more than one 4th Job build. One that you want to take, and one that you have to take depending on the skills you acquire first. Pirate books are fairly easy to obtain in general though, so you can pretty much just go with what you want to without having to save points waiting for a book.

Talk to Kyrin. Then select the second option to fight her. Survive for 2 minutes and you will be given the skill.
Cannon/Torpedo
Defeat 150 Spirit Vikings and Gigantic Spirit Vikings, respectively, and collect 50 of their special etc. drops. Cannon requires the drops from Spirit Vikings and Torpedo requires the drops from Gigantic Spirit Vikings.
Hypnotize
Talk to the girl in the Training Room inside the Nautilus. Then pick the second option to be transported to a special area. There are 3 mini-jump quests here. The jumping isn't difficult, but there are the pink and blue Mu Lung snakes in the way. If you touch one, you have to restart from the very beginning of the jump quest. When you get to the end, click the NPC and you will be transported to another special map where you must protect the NPC from sage cats, book ghosts, and peach monkeys. Afterwards, you are given the skill.
Air Strike
There are 3 parts to this quest. You first start it by talking to Bart then Lord Jonathan. Part 1
A quiz. The questions change every time. Just guess if you don't know and wait until you get one that you do know. Part 2
You will be sent into a room with 9 Bart NPCs. Nexon did not fix the translation so when you whack one of the NPCs, you'll get ? text. Just whack them until you get the right one. Part 3
This works just like Guild Party Quest Stage 1, except there are only 6 statues. You do 4 statues, 5 statues, and 6 statues.
Afterwards, you are given the skill.
Note: This section may change if currently unreleased areas are released in GMS later on. Also, all reasonable suggestions are welcomed. For a more detailed perspective, check out the Pirate training guide stickied in this forum.

They don't have to be stunned cause you can just keep kbing them with flamethrower>burst fire>flamethrower>burst fire repeat :O.
In the picture of all knuckles/guns/bullets: reverse, timeless, maple and astaroth weapons are missing.
Add the subway pq for training places with a 6-hitting summersault kick it may be great.
Add the power b force guy or something. He has quests which level you quickly. They did for my aran though

Future addition: Pictures!

So the SSK first build looks interesting. Would going STRless affect that build whatsoever resulting in the player opting for Double Shot anyway?

Why no Time Temple training spots?
With the KMS changes I think maxed Ice Splitter might be more beneficial than maxed Flamethrower.

I suppose the dynamic is slightly different, but on my Hermit it was the complete opposite - Newties were far more dangerous. When I was training at Nightshadows I almost never used HP pots - they're mostly harmless unless they spawn on you, and usually I just used Drain to get that HP back. At Newties, every time I looted I'd use up 2-3 Ice Cream Pops. And that's with a long-range looting pet & "DK puppet" to stop the Newties from casting magic so often (if you're alone in the map they all auto-target you and fire as soon as you're in range, if there's someone sitting in the corner they sometimes target that player instead). It wouldn't even be worth looting without those.
On the whole, I earned way more money at Nightshadows, and similar exp. Even if you can stun newties, you can't avoid them spawning right where they drop loot, and they have a long range auto-targeting attack instead of a melee attack which you can even jump over. I did spend 110-126 at Newties, because I could practically AFK and train there for similar exp rates. But from 85-110 I was at Nightshadows.

I would recommend maxing Ice Splitter and getting 26 Flamethrower. In my experience, sometimes Ice Splitter is the difference between a 2HKO and a 3HKO. Thus, it should do as much damage as possible.
And if anyone still doubts that Gaviota is useless...I maxed it and I regret it big time. The damage difference between level 15 and level 30 isn't worth the extra SP. I'll be resetting Gaviota into Flamethrower once I start maxing Elemental Boost.

I also agree with 30 Ice and 26 Flame.
You should probably take off that "Training Build" in 4th job altogether. It's not a good build no matter what you want to do. lol at Air Strike before Torpedo.
Also, my forum name here is KaidaTan. You have it listed as KeikoTan from my SW name.

Shadow Trainer Wrote:So the SSK first build looks interesting. Would going STRless affect that build whatsoever resulting in the player opting for Double Shot anyway?
Not really. Note: SSK is significantly less useful after 30 when skill updates come anyway. Only use would be PYPQ.
Chameleonic Wrote:Why no Time Temple training spots?
With the KMS changes I think maxed Ice Splitter might be more beneficial than maxed Flamethrower.
I dunno.
I don't see why since they both get the same exact % increase.

I disagree. The damage difference is the same whichever one you choose, except flamethrow relies on the damage you do for it's burn. I suppose if you don't use FT that much where the extra damage isn't appealing, then maxing ice splitter is fine.

Alright, i'll just go with the other two builds or start completely from scratch.
I was unaware the two accounts had different names, lol. Fixed.
I was planning on just having pictures of all attacking skills a corsair can use. I already have someone helping me with that. I figure if i can have pictures why not? Not like i could have taken advantage of the non-existant feature on basil.

But Ice Splitter is used in many situations. It's used to freeze a mob before you Torpedo it or used to freeze a single monster while you Cannon it. In those situations, the extra 18% damage on Splitter could help you kill a hit sooner or make a good chance to KO more reliable. Flamethrower, even though it benefits more from the 4 points than Ice (22% instead of 18%, and more burn damage because of the extra power), it's used far far less throughout the Corsair career.
And I can help with those pictures if you want.

I understand that, but i don't see how 18% affecting the %HKO very much. o.o In most situations it probably wouldn't affect anything at all.
I already got another corsair to get them already actually. Once i get the last few attacks from him i'll put them in the guide.

By the same token, in how many situations will 22%+2.2% make a difference? I'd say that since both upgrades are fairly insignificant, it's better to put your eggs in the basket you use several hundred times an hour instead of the one you may use in specific situations during 12x, 13x, and 19x.

I'm surprised actually that you didn't stick your alias in the thread title. Quite adamant you were on Basilmarket.

You mean in this title? It doesn't really matter much. What do you mean by the 2nd sentence?
