Sleepywood Sold, Old Site Probably Gone Forever
Some of you may have heard this, others not so much since someone decided to bring this up in Shenanigans of all places, but Sleepywood shut down last night. This has been reported by multiple members of their staff.
It was done without warning to the staff or users, and Adura has not yet that I am aware of responded to his own staff regarding the shut down.
It's actually saying "Under New Management" now, so Un-Dead. Ish.
It still remains to see what they come out of this as, and if this on top of their previous issues will have been too much for them to make a comeback.
-
Re: Sleepywood Closes Its Doors
The page says it'll be back soon, so its probably just going to change it up to be a general gaming forum.

Re: Sleepywood Closes Its Doors
Er. Doesn't it just say that's they're revamping stuff? Fixing the forum, whatever?
Maybe I'm missing something, I'm not sure.
-
Re: Sleepywood Closes Its Doors
I'd say the "revamping" message is just there for any case which the site goes down. Considering it was not discussed with anyone on the staff or had any warning, it's most likely not being worked on at all. I mostly lurked Sleepywood years ago before Southperry, it's very surprising to see it just randomly go without warning.
-
Re: Sleepywood Closes Its Doors
Much like Nintendo Power recently announcing they were stopping publication, it was a pretty obvious thing to do (to either close the site or rebrand it), but still, seeing it really happen before your own eyes a part of you can't help but feel a bit sad even if you've never browsed it in years. A part of you might want it to stick around in its current form even if it's just for the sake of nostalgia. Let's face the facts, if it wasn't for Sleepywood, there would be no Southperry and perhaps it wasn't always the best when it came to some details, but it was all we really had back then, and for that I'm grateful.
So goodbye Sleepywood of the olden days, you've served your purpose well. After all, nothing can last forever.
-
Re: Sleepywood Closes Its Doors
It's disappointing because this could have all been prevented. But oh well, I believe the site has been bought by a certain someone, so it's not dead forever.

Goodness knows I've offered to buy him out before it came to this, repeatedly.

RIP to a site that was once great and powerful.

I barely remember SW anymore.
If there was a site I really missed it was happymapling.net. I was crushed when that site shut down, most if not all, of my MS friends came from there.

I'd say 2006? I first found it through a list of affiliates on SW. It had its peak around 2007 - 2008, and I think shut down around 2010.

Oh well. I'd considered posting it in MS-D, but eh.
I do feel somewhat sad for it.

Re: Sleepywood Closes Its Doors
The only reason this upsets me is for the fact that it held so many years of game and community history/data. If they do not some how archive the information collected over the years from players it'll be a serious pineapple you to the players who used it, not Nexon America.

But I guess the bright(est) side here is that everyone has some closure. It didn't just fade into non-existence, like so many other sites do.

Re: Sleepywood Closes Its Doors
Sad for the active world forums and the market forums where you can actually sell/buy stuff that's unsuitable for basil.
-
Re: Sleepywood Closes Its Doors
Thank you, Sleepywood, for giving us Southperry.
-
Re: Sleepywood Closes Its Doors
Man, I had a good 2,000+ posts on that site. Also will be sad to see that Pirate flaunting thread I made just vanish into thin smoke. Ah well, no real pity for Adura destroying his own site.
Random thoughts that came to mind:
Adura:
Nice Job Fixing It, Villain
Hoist by His Own Petard
Banning Fiel = Came Back Strong = Southperry.
Thanks Adura for banning Fiel, creating Southperry, and eventually causing your own downfall.

and personally and seriously, sad i never got to see it on it's days of glory, but that place had nothing on it now, and i mean -nothing- not surprised it went down, but rather how it did. poor members.

There was no "main website" until about 20 minutes ago. It was just a placeholder/down message.

Re: Sleepywood Closes Its Doors
Did Maur really think this was a good investment? (To me it looks like he was the one that purchased it)
Keep in mind that he is the one that owns "perioncorner" which looks REALLY well kept up.
Hes also shoving mapleradio down everyones throat by adding the player directly on the site, and having it play automatically.
Oh well, I never used sleepywood. I don't really think I'm missing out.

Peerless is still alive but not active. They were fairly active about a year ago so I'm guessing they died out again.

Unfortunately I can't access SW.net because my company's firewall blocks it as a social networking website. So in other words, he ended up selling the website to the guy who does perioncorner? I didn't even know that was still alive haha

Re: Sleepywood Closes Its Doors
Never really used SW. By the time I entered the whole 'forum universe' I was a basil user for a bit (mainly for the market) and then came here.
Doesn't really affect me that they are "gone," but I agree with Loose. If SW brought up SP, then I am pretty happy they existed.

Re: Sleepywood Closes Its Doors (For a couple weeks?)
At least with SW having new management; we don't have to worry as much about someone who's whining over either Nexon North America or SP.

It's hardly necessary as he has yet to actually bring the site back alive and I'm not Nexon.

All we know is it's in the process of trading hands. How much of it, which portions of it, etc are still unknown, so it may be dead, it may be partially alive, it may be merged into another site, it may come back just like before, it may come back as some weird hybrid. We know little until we know more.

Re: Sleepywood Closes Its Doors
No offense to this site whatsoever, but before I learned that Adura was somewhat of a nutcase who was so paranoid that he stalked people's private pages and threatened them if he saw any mention of himself (as well as many other deep flaws), Sleepywood was my favorite site to discuss things. This site had the smart people and good info since Fiel and Isaac came here, as well as many others, but sleepywood was just sort of just the default forum for maplestory since Basil was and still is a haven for utter stupidity and Shakar (yea, synonyms, but still). It's really a shame that it's pretty much in deep trouble, basically more people are gonna shift to Basil since even Nexon has done everything but endorse that site as an extension of itself, since the maturity of sites like Sleepywood and Southperry don't fit into their image.
-
Re: Sleepywood Closes Its Doors
Hmm, the only thing I remembered about Sleepywood was my Tespia posts. Oh, wasn't it @aslemn that made those Tespian signatures? I can't remember, but that'll be a huge coincidence.

At this point, can we confirm Adura is no longer in charge of Sleepywood? Not sure if I was reading things wrong or not.

I got myself intentionally banned from the site about 9 months ago or so. Locked and I were pissed about something, I said SP is better, BOOM banned!
Tis okay, the account had a total of 3 posts in its 5 years of ownership. I used it once and only once to sign up for the zak helm leech list.
As for sp, im about halfway behind you. I do have a ton of VM though!

Re: Sleepywood Closes Its Doors
I wouldn't take it for granted that new-management means old posts will be preserved or archived in any meaningful way. My first Maple community was the subforum on OnRPG, and when they moved/revamped shortly after the release of GMS, none of the old data was archived.

Re: Sleepywood Closes Its Doors
At least it has a chance of being a decent forum (again) now. :f3:
I remember my original account on Sleepywood was permanent banned because of a small question about the Japanese version of the game. I don't remember what it was, really, but I couldn't think of a reason why they would've banned me for it. It was even in the "Other MapleStory Versions" section of the forum... so whatever. There was no warning, infraction, or anything - just a flat out permanent ban.

Someone probably had it out for you. That's the type of forum sleepywood EVENTUALLY turned into. ...Who the hell am I kidding, it was like that even before Ruk gave the site to Adura, just to a lesser extent.
That said, Sleepywood was the big forum for the first few years of maple's lifespan and was where all of the good nitty gritty game mechanics info was at. Until SP came along. Just goes to show you, management really DOES make the entire foundation of a site.

Indeed it does. Just about the entire staff recognized the fact that Adura just sat around all day, not contributing to staff discussion or improvement of the forum. And when we wanted to/did make progress, he held us back. Pretty pineappleing annoying.

Thanks for reminding me just how drama filled the forums could be. I swear a price were placed on Tiger's head or something due to how much crap he gets from others, not to mention server forum wars that'd break out, especially from Vengance people. It was such a mess.

We had to go through a lot of trouble to help his forum. Even as administrators, Brandon and I had very little influence over the site. Everything was micro-managed.

Oh, I particularly remember the incident where Veng members actually mocked Tiger's father because he committed suicide. Whether they were that heartless or it was a "just in the moment" comment, I don't want to know.
On a side note, is MapleTip still around as a website and forum?

Shakar was banned early this summer. Maybe a bit earlier. He came back in early August. I'm not entirely sure why they put up with him.
@Judgment Mapletip is up as a site, but I'm not really sure when their database was last updated. When I looked for something there in may, they were really out of date.

I agree. The zakum/Ht threads bought the best guilds from every server together in their world forums. The drama threads there made for amazing reads :f3: They could give one insight into the higher ups of each server xD.

I remember they wouldn't let me on the top 20 DrK list because apparently a "good friend" of his told him I was dcing hack his guild. Frankly I was at work the entire time he was being dc'd from HT so I have no idea how he came to the conclusion it was me. Dropped the site all together after that :f3:

As long as we are talking about old dead MapleStory based forums. I miss Bellardia, that place was the bomb-diggity.
On the subject of Sleepywood, I joined the forum but never used it enough to think of myself as a member of it. So I never got to witness all the horrors people speak of.

iirc it was just one admin who was tasked to archive certain threads that were past a date, but they screwed up and archived pretty much EVERYTHING, including threads from the mod forum. I wasn't around when it actually happened, but they apparently didn't make a backup and there were just so many threads archived that they had to throw everything in one pile, including said moderator subforum threads.
Although it was an embarrassment on the staff's part, it was an amazing way for the members to see how each mod really acted behind the scenes; e.g. whether they were being reasonable or unreasonable, or who actually gave a damn about things like warn redemptions.

Every memory I had from this game almost always revolved around Broa and Bowmen sectios on Sleepy. From Zak run schedules, to Jjang HT runs taking the first user on a run to buy a pendant and egg, to all the fun drama that actually made the game even funner.

That's a shame. Even though I didn't want to have anything to do with MT anymore, I never wanted it to crash and burn like that.
And their stance on hacking discussion/witch hunting at SW, makes me wonder if that would still work as a forum policy now.

Can you elaborate on that for the unfamiliar?

I believe it was that Adura would go out of his way to ban anyone he suspects is a hacker, or has played on Private servers. I do know he purposely confronted and demanded to know if Congee (one of the mods) played on a Private server. She admitted to have played on a Private server, and got permabanned for it. It's rather hypocritical seeing Adura himself either made a Private server or plays in one as well.
If you can count this as witch hunting, we can add in Stereo, whom Adura worked his ass off on eliminating the rest of his alt accounts by purposely DDOSing his own site so to draw out Stereo and deleted his remaining accounts.
There's more to the story, I'm very sure of it. I'm only recalling what I DO remember.

Adura knew, despite perma-banning Stereo on his main account, he had alt accounts somewhere. Therefore, Adura DDOSed Sleepywood (yes he crashed his own site), claiming Stereo was the one who hacked Sleepywood out of revenge (since Stereo's main account got banned AND his posts got deleted from the public). This of course tarnished Stereo's name and is an outright lie. Stereo had to go on alt accounts to refute such slander, which was exactly what Adura wanted since he drew Stereo out and was able to ban those accounts as well.

So sad to see a site like that gone. It made a lot of memories come back to mind.. I even had 1.5k+ posts on there!
And it was where I got to know of this beautiful forum called "Southperry".
Oh well. I didn't even visit it anymore, but it makes me sad to see it gone. I really hope it's just a server move for real.

Re: Sleepywood Closes Its Doors
I always wondered about that Stereo madness. There was never any mention of it in the sleepywood staff archive, only the public announcement.

There are a whole hell of a lot of things Adura suppressed, believe me.

The more I hear about this Adura fellow, the more interesting this thread gets.
Anyone else have stories they's like to share?

Most of what people would have to say isn't repeatable here. You can consult Encyclopedia Dramatica for a hyperbolic version though.
