Next-gen PlayStation “Orbis” expected in 2013

It’s not clear if Sony intends to reveal a new PlayStation at E3 this year, but new details have emerged regarding the console, including what it could potentially be called. Kotaku has learned that the current working codename for the next PlayStation is “Orbis”. The console is also being planned for a 2013 release during the holiday season.
The Latin name “Orbis” means “circle”, or “ring”. Combined with Sony’s portable PlayStation Vita, you could be looking at a Latin play on words: “circle of life.” Specs for the console aren’t finalized, but Sony is said to be working with an AMD x64 CPU and an AMD Southern Islands GPU right now. The Orbis’ GPU will be capable of displaying a 4096×2160 resolution, and playing 3D games at 1080p.
Kotaku also reports that “select developers” have been courted to work on the console, receiving development kits at the start of the year. Finalised beta versions of the console will be sent out towards the end of this year. That will give developers time to work on any games planned to launch with the console during the holiday season in 2013.
Finally, it’s revealed that Orbis will not be backwards compatible with PS3 games, just like the PS3 removed the ability to play PS2 games. Sony are also working on an “anti-used games” system. Games will be available on both Blu-ray Discs and the PlayStation Network, and once you purchase/download and fire up the game, you’ll be required to “lock” it to your PlayStation account. If you were to try and trade the game or sell it second-hand, the new buyer would be limited in gameplay, and be required to unlock/purchase the full game again.
Ha.

Sony secretly catering to MapleStory players.

SAAAAAAAAAAA-MBOENYAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
pineappleing anti-resell thing though, that's LOW.

Re: Next-gen PlayStation “Orbis” expected in 2013
Playstation "Death."
If you know anything about Chinese, Japanese and Korean superstitions, you'd get it (or if you read that article on Kotaku).
-
Re: Next-gen PlayStation “Orbis” expected in 2013
Seriously, this crusade against used games sales needs to be put to a pineappleing stop. They should just go after Gamestop already and get it over with, instead of making us consumers suffer for it.
-
Re: Next-gen PlayStation “Orbis” expected in 2013
Agreed. That whole "locking" crap is obnoxious and stands as a big obstacle with the way gamers play games a lot of the time (especially with old consoles/games).

Re: Next-gen PlayStation “Orbis” expected in 2013
I thought about posting this a couple days ago but decided against it, it pissed me off too much. This is going to be the first console I crack if I actually decide to purchase it (which I probably won't). And I've owned a PSP since launch. No back compat is an even bigger issue than the used games thing, to me, and simply cracking the console wouldn't fix that.

I don't even know what Sony is trying to do anymore...

Re: Next-gen PlayStation “Orbis” expected in 2013
Planned 2013 release date=2016.
-
Re: Next-gen PlayStation “Orbis” expected in 2013
I really want to support Sony, but they're making it so hard... This is just failure. I hope they get rid of the pre-owned games idea. Also, I think I won't be released until mid 2014 late 2014. 2013 is just around the corner.

I notice you got a steam account there. You realize you can't sell/buy second hand games on steam either right?

But Steam isn't a rip-off at least.

Re: Next-gen PlayStation “Orbis” expected in 2013
A lot of rumours say Microsoft are also planning to do a similar thing in regards to pre-owned games. I hope both turn out to be false really. Or if they are true i hope the Wii U is powerful enough to get cross platform games.

Re: Next-gen PlayStation “Orbis” expected in 2013
>Limited Gameplay for 2nd hand consoles.
They just want to get money for that.
Even friends that trade games to play "together" will be affected. That's 2 for the idea of 1.
>not backwards-compatible
And them good PS3 games get retro.
>Orbis Vita
doesn't even mean Circle of Life, but rather Circuli de Vita (Or in the current vocables, Oribs Vitae). To be exact, there are multiplire vocables that mean Circle, as example Animus, which also means Ghost.
Orbis has the sense of a circle surrounding something, AKA Earth is in a "Orbis".
>Orbis Vita set.
Why I say that PSVita will be combined with PSOrbis?
I belive Sony tried to patent the "2nd picture controller" (AKA Wii U).
I see it coming. Just the wordplay is... urgh.

They can't patent something Nintendo already has a patent on. o.o

At least steam has a business model that I can support though. Wherever you can log in, you can download your game.

Re: Next-gen PlayStation “Orbis” expected in 2013
Disappointed in all of this anti-used game-locked to one console stuff going on. Can think of many things wrong with that system of doing things, but little to no benefits of it, to us as customers anyway.
-
Re: Next-gen PlayStation “Orbis” expected in 2013
Heh, I expect this to end up like the PS3, PSP and Vita: really nice hardware that will be plague by typical Sony decisions that can basically be translated to hating their customers.

They tried.
I read that somewhere, and it even had a "concept pic" which showed what looks like a ps3, and a psvita/psp, and some connection text and blablabla.
They actually tried.

Re: Next-gen PlayStation “Orbis” expected in 2013
Are you talking about this patent?
-
Re: Next-gen PlayStation “Orbis” expected in 2013
God dam. I only want the new Playstation for Uncharted 4, but if it can't play any ps3 games, they are really shooting themselves in the foot here.
-
Re: Next-gen PlayStation “Orbis” expected in 2013
I really don't know if I'll buy it now. That game lock is a horrible addition to the system. Also, not being able to play PS3 games on it is a major problem. They're not trying hard enough to appeal to their consumers. They're just doing whatever the pineapple they want at this point. I'll most likely be getting the new Nintendo console. I knew you were a little crazy Sony, but I still loved you. BUT GAME LOCKS? *facepalms*

Re: Next-gen PlayStation “Orbis” expected in 2013
And so continues my life without owning a Sony console.

only reason why i tried to get a PS3, was because of the backwards compatibility plus that it's a DVD player on top.
unfortunately i didn't get it fast enough, so my PS3 only plays ps3 games ~_~ first and last PS i get for a good while i'm sure.

60GBfat master race. It's my best friend! New consoles' worth, to me, hinges entirely on their back compat ability. No back compat and it's worthless. I have SO MANY PS1/PS2 disks that would be obsolete now that I gave my younger cousins my PS2, to say nothing of the fact that it can't play PS3 games either, which I have a good 15-20 of.

Which is why I got the 60GB as well. It's the best choice out of them all!

Re: Next-gen PlayStation “Orbis” expected in 2013
I can't help but think that several of these rumors are false; but that isn't to say with the trend of things that they are out of the realm of possibility. I'm leaning towards believing in the lack of backward compat myself, but the anti-used thing I'm hesitant to believe in the manner it's been described. I wouldn't doubt that they do something, but outright 1 game, 1 system seems too stupid to do. If all of the next gen does go in that direction, they are going to have to speed up the rate and frequency of price drops on games if they even intend to stay in the market.
I mean, as things are I have difficulty catching up, and as more and more games have co-op dependencies which die out within 3 months, more often than not, I'm actually taking things off of my wishlist now. With my backlog, the possibility of this trend, and much more time being put into a job, I might call it quits with following consoles at all after this generation. Canceling my magazines has helped in lowering the desires too, so I bet at that point I'd be just fine with it anyway.
Still, rumors are rumors for now, let's not state it as fact. P.S. I've not been with SONY for over 2 years now, so don't read anything into what I say. If I had any idea what was going on in their heads, I'd still be working there.

This is one of the reasons why I can't wait for more info on the Wii U. I really hope it's a blast.
