Gosh, this reminds me of pre-Big-Bang era, when Mages were downtrodden and potions were actually costly (particularly the Mushroom Miso Ramen). I wrote a whole essay on ranting of Mages being on the bottom end of a lot of things. That essay was lost to time, but I vaguely remembered it.
