You are right that all items/skills/stats only say "ignore enemy defense" and never specify physical or magical.
Up until now I would have assumed there is just one number that is used in both physical-damage and magical-damage calculations.
Ambition working for physical but not magical classes (this is just a theory, btw. Could just as well be that it works only for adventurers, or something odd like that), however, seems to indicate that it doesn't apply automatically to both types of attack. And the skills that don't ignore def even though they should, might have an ignore-physical-def value which does nothing (this sort of copy-paste typo is typical of Nexon).
I'd like to see data from a Phantom with high Ambition, whether the ignore-def observed on Rapid Fire (physical) and Chain Lightning (magical) is the same and includes Ambition ignore def or not.
