The design of the thing leads me to believe it could still be a whip, though the stab animation side-view does not. What I mean is, I could see an extension connected by the glowing energy we expect modeled like the Crissagrim Blade already in game. That spear head and repeated pattern in the body somewhat lends itself to that.
I feel like the sword is just a place-holder.

What I Thought when I read the thread tittle.
Didn't we all knew it was going to be some sort of sword? An Energy Sword. It was revealed when Fiel unpacked the string data of the Automata.
