What playing nature's profit is like for me:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CGn9GM30h9s
I'd post the original comic but it's NSFW due to a certain ursine warrior having his way with a certain hero.
When will we play together again? :(
It's much better and much fun when I get a good team. I've been noticing that I can do a lot in a game if my teammates aren't plantains. For me, the difference between 0/6/3 and 4/6/20 is just the team. Depending on the team so much, and playing with jerks, makes the game boring... I haven't played Leshrac in a while because it's impossible to do anything.
I don't get why people is so afraid of dying, even after I land stuns and pomegranate... I don't understand why they must run away. It annoys me even more when they tell me not to feed... when I'm dying to 1-2 heroes and there are at least 3 of us there.
I played quite a few games with Malthe over the holidays. Just message us on Steam when you want to play.
Yup, if i'm online just throw me a message. I'm sure we'll be able to find time to stack up again.
It's a lot funnier to play when we don't have to worry about a silly 5th random person.
Update: I'm up for some games tonight if you guys are, i'm also ready to skype it up or something similar if you guys want to.
Also, i just got more invites to give out, just ask and you'll recieve.
I'll be around for games later tonight and tomorrow.

gangnam style dota
QoP has the best butt in DotA2.
Also, I much prefer this one:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=hIlrxmyJO8Q
Much more "original".
Also, small joke: When does AM stop farming?
Spoiler
It's a pun on the fact that manta-style is the best item anti-mage can buy.
I got into DoTA 2 thanks to a friend giving me a free pass.
Nature's Prophet is trollastic with his teleports but I can't jungle properly so I end up horribly underleveled.
I'm really liking Pudge. Hook -> Rot -> Dismember = death. A true ganksta. I'm able to level about as fast as other players and once even outleveled everyone on my team and enemy except for a really good Skeleton King player (who was thankfully on my side), which means at the very least I don't suck playing him. I'm still amused how easy it was to land Meat Hook on the enemy as soon as I noticed it grabs the first object in the way, so I stopped using it in clustered mobs. I've yet to hook away my team members from imminent death, but I feel that'll be pretty hilarious to do.
Any other heroes you guys would suggest I try? I've been given Crystal Maiden, Clockwerk, and Twin-Headed Dragon.
If you're fine with trying different things, random every single game you play. Gives you bonus gold from the start too.
Also, if you know anybody who needs a key, just inform us, i personally have a good 30 invites to spare ATM, probably only 20 tomorrow, but still!
Also, CM is a great support and the strongest level 2 hero in the game as far as aggression goes. She's a bit on the squishy side but a great support.
THD is another amazing support, great stat-gain and his ice-path is so incredibly strong at the moment, he works best in tri-lanes though, or a defensive lane.
And clockwerk can be run as a lot of different things, mostly solo laner though, and mostly he's used as a 2nd or 3rd position hero. Also with aghanim's scepter upgrade you're spider-man.
Also for NP jungling there are a few ways to do it, the best IMO for safe jungling is:
Start off with ring of basilius and 2 clarity potions, wait in fountain untill lane creeps spawn and then wait another 10 seconds, now use trees around fountain to spawn treants and regen mana back, saves you a ton of mana. Now take your first set of treants to the small camp and kill it, when they die or despawn, summon new treants and once you've summoned your third set of treants, use your first clarity. Go between medium and small camps.
Your first item should be hand of midas which should be used on big creeps for the EXP multiplier.
And your build should be something along the lines of:
Treants, teleport, now either get treants for more jungling or sprout if you're ready to gank a lane, after this get 3 level into treants and leave it there, get ult while you can. Skill priority generally goes:
Nature's wrath>Teleport>Treants>Sprout But you can alter it as you feel the need.
You regain lost exp by midassing big creeps and by ganking, you can also afk jungle, it works if you build into somewhat of a carry, and you can also do split-push style. But good prophet ganks a lot and gets a quick Scythe of vyse and such items, but his recommended items probably work till you get better judgement from game to game.
Also for terms used that you don't understand, feel free to ask about them, if there are any.
Oh and the most important rule in DotA:

Also, medusa finally added:

Some other simple and effective heroes: Venomancer, Viper, Tidehunter.
I just recived 6 invitations if anyone needs....
Doh ho ho, I sadly don't bother with TPs because I can't hold all these stat boosting items + bottle. With NP I just abuse his Teleport, and with Pudge I spam Phase Boots to get back into battle sooner. I see what you mean though, since I saw a friend of mines always buy a TP scroll whenever he could. That in itself means they are damn useful. Speaking of damn useful, wards are funny stuff. So far I pretty much was the only one putting them up. I learned some of the safer ward spots, which helps in keep track of when an opposing hero is nearing our 1st tower.
I'll give em a try as well. Which ones are late-game bloomers, and which ones kick ass from the get go?

@IllegallySane What's your steam id? Or add wordssp and we can play together :D
Even on nature's prophet TPs are invaluable, they are pretty much the best item in DotA2. For example, you can carry TP scrolls with you, push down a lane, enemy are on their way? TP to base and recover, then TP instantly to another lane to continue split-pushing, or TP back and finish item and then join a fight with full hp and mana again.
Being able to instantly back-up an ally in another lane, defend a tower and escape ganks is quite amazing. Also, ward spots:
Spoiler
Venomancer is a support that can kill pomegranate right off the bat, his level 1 ganks are amazing. He's a decently scaling support since most of his pomegranate can work through magic immunity.
Viper is a hero that can dominate his lane and carry somewhat in the mid-game. His lategame is meh but he's strong in lane.
Tidehunter is another support that has an amazing teamfight ultimate. He's great in both early and mid-game and works lategame too.
Venomancer can usually work as both 4th and 5th position, but he can also be put into 2nd position since he's quite strong in lane as well.
Viper is usually 2nd position in pub games, but can also work as a 1st position, it's just rarer to see him there.
Tidehunter can run anything from 3rd to 5th position, most common position for him is 4th though.
How do you play Tidehunter, Malthe? I tried him once today and went 0/13. I was in safe lane against Lich and Phantom Lancer. Everytime I tried to save my lane partner, I ended up dead too. Lots of feeding going on. I feel like one problem is that I overestimate the tankiness of strength heroes (I'm terrible with Lifestealer, too), but I'm curious about how Tidehunter is played.
I tried Omniknight a couple days ago. I just crashed and burned with him. :(
Clinkz, it's like love at first sight. His Skeleton Walk is one heck of an escape tool, and his damage got crazy pretty fast.
Tinker is quite amazing as a lane destroyer (was just racking up the gold), and his heat-seeking missiles were just a huge way to repel carries away from me. But the best part was that I hadn't realized the true potential of his "Rearm" Ultimate + Travel Boots. Just reading about it was making me giddy.
Faceless Void took a while for me to actually feel his power, but even then I felt it's kinda okay. His burst wasn't super spectacular, and his ultimate was very high risk high reward due to also freezing my allies in place if they are caught in the area. Miss a ranged hero, and that can spell major trouble.
I'll add ya on Steam. Sorry for late reply, had been messing around on DoTA 2 as well as re-trying LoL a bit.
Omniknight has the same problems that other melee supports have, incredibly and utterly pomegranatety laning-phase. They lack a lot of the things that make ranged supports good. But his skill-kit makes up for it by being absolutely ridic support in teamfights, just sucks that diffusal blade can purge all his buffs from a target and any hero with built in purge can pineapple omni up big time.
Clinkz just needs an orchid of malevolence to start rolling, it's his bread and butter by providing a silence, preventing enemies from fighting back and utilizes his massive damage output over a short time-span, the damage amplification just helps finish off enemies but the best part is the high mana regen because clinkz is VERY mana intensive. He also 'soft-counters' chen by being able to absorb the creeps chen has converted and given bonus HP which directly synergizes with death pact allowing clinkz to absorb chen's creep and then kill chen. It also allows for chen and clinkz to be best buddies ever by keeping a nice high-HP creep around for clinkz to take in fights.
Tinker is pretty much just an absolutely amazing hero at all points of the game. Without boots of travels he is just incredibly lack-luster and weak but lategame with BoT he can split-push like no other and when you have an item like scythe of vyse you can permanently disable a target. Soul-ring and bottle + boots of travel is tinker's bread and butter since soul ring allows you to use level 1 rearm which then takes soul ring off cooldown again, making level 1 rearm pretty much free. Which is why you keep rearm at level 1 for a long while till your mana regen is increased. And with boots of travel you'll be back at base very often which makes bottle so cost-effecient regen for tinker.
Oh and faceless void is the best 1v1 lategame carry in the game, nobody can beat him in an 1v1 and when fully farmed he destroys teams and is only really outcarried by medusa and possibly phantomlancer. He needs to farm 5ever but is quite amazing in teamfights because a good chronosphere pretty much wins you the fight. He does need a BKB to fight 95% of all teams due to as you mentioned, if you miss even 1 hero with a disable you're pretty screwed since your chronosphere is more or less negated.
Battlefury is more or less core on him since it gives him a farming tool.
I usually play tide-hunter two ways myself.
One is to roam and get kills and gank lanes as much as possible. It's pretty simple, you just grab a few cheap stat boosting items and some clarities and tangos, then you just get gush and go kill pomegranate in lanes where kills are possible.
The second way is to be in a lane where kills are possible anytime an enemy enters the lane.
regardless of what type i play i'll usually get mana boots, urn of shadows(If nobody else gets it) and then build pipe or blink dagger, depending on if enemies are going to engage upon us or if we're going to engage upon them. I just want to have mana and survive fights while providing as much 'support' for my team.
Tidehunter is an excellent ganker. Roaming Tide is my favorite playstyle, but it requires good map awareness and the ability to be able to tell when a gank is possible. Gush is a huge 40% slow + armor reduction for 4 seconds, which is an easy kill if followed up on with autoattacks from your team. Make sure you let your team know when you're going to gank so they can get in position, then pop out of the jungle with a Gush. Skill build for this playstyle is max Gush with 1 point in all other skills, then max Kraken Shell for ganking, or Anchor Smash if you need to push/farm.
Once you hit 6, you're ready for teamfights. Your ult is very scary early game, so your team wants to play aggressively and try to take towers while your ult is up. Try to wait until a fight is guaranteed to happen before you pop it, and catch as many people in it as you can. You're not going to be very tanky since you're not getting farm, so avoid getting focused and stay back once you pop the ult. That's about it for the basics, really.
Can you guys go over Lifestealer too? He seems well equipped to be a counter to tanks, but I've never seen it work in a match, either with me or someone else playing.
N'aix has two ways to be played, generally.
He is either jungled or put in a lane to farm.
Jungling works but isn't the best, laning n'aix is a force to watch out for.
He has an incredibly good slow and is capable of simply killing any enemy that'd dare to step into his lane.
As far as items go, if you're doing well early on you can get a hand of midas to boost your exp and gold intake early on. Boots of choice are typically phase boots to help with lacking gap-closer, that or power treads. Drums of endurance is a great item for early aggression and armlet is one of the most core items on n'aix due to how good synergy it has with him.
Later on items you'll want are generally: Assault cuirass, mjolnir, heart, satanic, MKB and daedalus. Different item has different ups and downs.
Your slow has maximum effect at level 1, so you don't have to put more than 1 point in it early on, you can focus on maxing rage and feast.
An early maelstrom is also nice to speed up your farming if you're farming more than fighting.
N'aix is strongest in the mid-game with an items like Phase boots, drums, armlet and then just fight fight fight.
Also Black king bar isn't a bad item on n'aix if your enemies have ways to drag fights out and they all posses a lot of disables/have bought lots of scythes of vyse.
BKB+Rage= 20+ seconds of magic immunity at maximum BKB charges, and 15 seconds magic immunity at minimum. It's good, but not needed in all games, most of the time rage on its own is fine.
N'aix is best laned with other aggressive heroes that can follow up on what he does, like a support vengeful spirit, crystal maiden, rubick, ogre magi(Ogre and n'aix are surpisingly strong in lane together due to the high kill potential.
Anything that can get early kills together with n'aixs slow is great.
Anything that can let n'aix farm up is great too.
Oh and i just realized i used n'aix all along, n'aix is lifestealer's name. Hope i didn't confuse you.
Spectre is a rather scary solo laner. I can pretty much outlast the other hero if in a 1 on 1. Even better with her ultimate + dagger chasing.
:o Didn't know there was a DOTA2 thread.

Feel free to add me on steam, don't really party with people much, but solo queue is kinda boring after a while.
Sorry if there's been an overload of these kinds of "I need help" posts but I figured it would be good to ask for help here. This post might end up kinda long so I'll try to format it as best as I can, but the bottom line is that I want to learn how to play/get good at DotA(2).
I'll just get it out of the way now that I have a background in LoL (average skill) and SC:BW/SC2 (gold - plat SC2), so ARTS/MOBAs aren't alien to me. I play games more for competition than for leisure, however, and after looking into DotA a bit I decided I'd probably enjoy it more than LoL if I had a firm grasp on it, and for several reasons (art style, pace, strategic variety, etc).
I'm not sure where to start learning however. I've done some research on game mechanics and watched a few gameplay videos from The International, but that's it. Things I know/have seen and probably won't have a big problem with:
- Farming/denying
- Eating trees
- Side shop/secret shop
- Courier/multi-unit management
- More complex micro in general
- Creep stacking
- Rune/jungle/area control
- STR, AGI, INT heroes
- most ARTS/MOBA basics, push/hold mechanic, etc.
Things that I understand in comparison to LoL:
- Progressive stats vs. pre-game runes/masteries for hero specing
- River runes/Roshan vs. jungle buffs/Dragon/Baron
- TP scroll vs. recall
- absence of summoner spells
- absence of ability power, magic resist, etc.
- different focal point for balancing heroes
- harsher death penalty
- hero availability
- hero roles? Might be a bit foggy on this, but I'm assuming there are carries, various flavors of supports, tanks, offtanks/tanky DPS, anti-carries, roamer, jungler, etc.
As expected though there are a lot of things I've seen that I don't understand and there probably will be more things to confuse me, but regardless I have more questions:
What is the significance of the day/night cycle? I'm assuming Radiant favors day and Dire favors night, but is there anything I'm missing other than that? Are there heroes with passives that are affected by day/night?
What happens when the game starts? Do teams fight over runes, try to deny the enemy jungler if there is one, try to snowball a lane right off the bat... In LoL it's usually either help the jungler get buffs or steal/deny the enemy team's buffs, but that process takes up most of the level 1 phase.
What do you do when you're behind? Do you just play passive until you can counter-play, or is it too punishing--do you have to fight your way back in?
How much does control over secondary objectives (Runes, Roshan) have an impact on the game? I know that runes respawn way more often than buffs in LoL (2 minutes as opposed to 5 minutes, 6-7 minutes for bigger objectives). Denying a buff to a laner gives his opponent and the opposing jungler much more presence, as an example, and later in the game the buff granted by Baron (Roshan's equivalent) can inhibit a team's ability to defend a push among other things. Does it work in a similar way in DotA?
What are the differences in the roles that carries of different stats have (AGI vs. INT etc)? The primary element that separates most carries in LoL is AP/spell damage vs. AD/AA damage, and then there are different ways the damage is applied, generally on a scale of high burst -> sustained. I would imagine that this is sort of how it works.
That's about all I can think of for now as far as questions go, but I'll probably have more later.
Anyway, I think I have an unused beta key so I may be able to hop on, but again I'm looking for some help with learning the basics, and after that someone to help me improve. I'm generally not fazed by something being too hard as long as I'll get something out of trying it. Thanks for the help!
I think Malthe and Dusk and others can cover your questions better than me, but one gets better at the game just practicing.
I spent 110+ hours in a month and I did get a little better but I still got a lot to learn. It helps a lot when you play with experienced people as they help you not mess up as much.
The greatest significance is vision. Some Day/night vision radii:Quote:
What is the significance of the day/night cycle? I'm assuming Radiant favors day and Dire favors night, but is there anything I'm missing other than that? Are there heroes with passives that are affected by day/night?
Unit Day Night 90% of heroes 1800 800 Towers 1900 800 Lane creeps 850 800
Basically, it's harder to gank during the day because enemy heroes have more time to react when you leave the lane, and you can be seen coming from further away. The first night is the most significant, because it coincides with when the strong gankers/mid-game carries get level 6-7 and get their chance to create momentum by getting kills and pushing towers. Don't extend as far in lane and expect ganks to happen.
In low level play, not much. There will usually be a couple heroes fighting over runes where convenient, but most people don't really capitalize on the 0-minute rune even when they can make something happen. In the level I play at, there will usually be some wards placed in the jungle + one of the ward spots and a bit of early scouting. In high level play and professional games, teams will often gather together to help place the wards and gank anyone they can catch alone.Quote:

There are no jungle buffs and no optimal paths for jungling in Dota, and the neutral creeps are significantly harder to kill unless you're a hero with summons/powerful AOEs. Jungle camp spawns can be denied by placing a ward in the spawn box. For these reasons, jungling is much less of a role and more of a way for a ganker to grab slower exp/gold while freeing up space in another lane.
There are several options:Quote:
What do you do when you're behind? Do you just play passive until you can counter-play, or is it too punishing--do you have to fight your way back in?
1. If you have a stronger lategame teamfight lineup and good anti-push, you can turtle and attempt to hold your towers for as long as possible, forcing your enemies to fight you in a disadvantageous position and getting your carries time to farm.
2. For 100g, you can purchase a Smoke of Deceit, which provides your team with 40s invisibility that dispels when you get close to enemy heroes. This allows you to sneak past wards and create ambushes. If you can pick off a lone hero or two, you swing map control back in your favor for about a minute, giving you time to push towers or kill Roshan.
3. If you've got a push oriented lineup with good mobility, you can try to split-push (push multiple lanes at once). If you can force your enemies to scatter to defend their towers, you may be able to force a teamfight when they're out of position, or take a tower for free, providing your entire team with a lot of gold.
Runes are huge. A Haste, Invis or DD buff can easily enable a gank that wouldn't otherwise be possible. Illusion runes are useful for lane control and scouting. DD runes are amazing in late game teamfights. Regen runes can make a huge difference for mid in the laning phase, and can even allow mobile heroes to recover quickly and come back into a teamfight at full health and mana.Quote:

Roshan drops an Aegis which gives an extra life, and is usually given to the hero that the enemies want to focus most, in order to draw fire and allow the rest of the team to clean up with impunity. It is often necessary to force a teamfight late game when the enemy team is turtling in base and wiping your incoming creep waves before you can push in. It's a very important objective.
Spell damage doesn't scale in Dota for the most part, and heroes that rely heavily on spells tend to fall off in the late game. In general, STR carries tend to be melee and tanky, AGI carries are squishy but more mobile/higher DPS, and INT carries are spell-dependent, vary a lot in playstyle, and rely on winning the game by 35-40 minutes. Every hero is unique to a much greater extent than LoL, though, and there aren't hard and fast rules about what carries are able to do. All that the primary stat really does is affect which stat increases your base damage.Quote:

Well, as far as learning goes, you can ask all the questions you want here, i’m by no means a professional player but i am almost 100% certain i can answer any game related or mechanic related question there is. And playing is what improves your skill the most of course.
As pointed out by dusk, almost all heroes have the same day/night vision which is 1800/800. This makes night a lot more dangerous and the time where ganks become way easier. A hero like Nightstalker whom thrives in the night has a 1200/1800 day/night vision. He is the only hero to not have a 1800 day vision.
There’s a table of attributes here so you can check the day/night vision of all heroes: http://www.dota2wiki.com/wiki/Table_of_Hero_attributes
Fights for runes aren’t super common, but they exist. You occasionally can mess with the enemy jungler by attempting to block their jungle camps from spawning. Generally speaking for for example the mid laner they’ll want to ’block’ their creeps and hinder their movements to make sure that they can force the creeps closer to their own tower, this gives you a slight edge in your lane. Sometimes teams also use a smoke of deceit instantly as the game starts to go as 5 and ward the enemy jungle/lane and if they catch an enemy they’ll kill him.
It depends heavily on your team composition, if you think you can win by getting up a few more items, playing passive can work. But generally speaking, utilizing smoke of deceit is one of the best ways to get back into a game. Also vision with wards is key. Especially lategame in dota it only takes one bad fight for the enemy where they can not buy back into the game for them to lose most of their base.
Roshan can be attempted to be killed at any point of the game(Even before minute zero) but it’s very rare for this to happen, and certain junglers can also solo him fairly early. And controlling him is generally pretty important because it’s a lot of gold and experience. You’ll usually put up wards there if the enemy has a hero that is able to kill him early on. Obviously dire has an advantage as far as roshan goes, but radiant has other advantages that more than make up for it.
Runes are very, very important for the mid lane and they are generally what decide the lane, good rune control is a very important skill as a mid-player and having vision of the runes is key. Some mid heroes rely heavily on runes to refill their bottles to stay in lane, if you can deny them their runes you force them to bottle-crow(Using the flying courier to refill their bottles) which takes courier time from the rest of their team.
The diference between carries in DotA is generally when they get ’online’ that’s the biggest difference i’d say. Some carries can be active early on with their teams and others need to sit back and farm 5ever. Then we have semi-carries, carries and hard carries which generally speaks of how early they come online.
Semi-carries are heroes such as mirana and wind-runner that can dish out decent damage and help a ton in the mid-game, but as far as carrying they fall off the later the game goes.
Carries generally come online later in the mid-game(25~30 minutes) and are able to join fights relatively quickly too.
Hard carries need to farm 5ever and are starting to become rare in dota since the developer is trying to push all hard carries into the category of getting online in the mid-game, because his goal is to shorten overall game-time. But some of the remaining hard-carries are spectre and medusa who need 4~5 high-tier items to fight but they demolish opposition once they have it.
As far as the stats goes, strength carries like Dragon knight and chaos knight generally speaking have a good disable and are tough to kill. Their lategame isn’t amazing but it isn’t bad, due to strength giving them high hp and damage.
Agility carries vary greatly but are generally very low in the HP department at the trade of having higher attack-speeds which results in higher damage outputs. A hero like phantom assasin has a crazy theoretical damage output, but is incredibly squishy and not very good.
And intelligence carries generally speaking have poor farming abilities but absolutely insane mid-game damage outputs. This include heroes like Outworld destroyer and silencer. There are also intelligence carries like queen of pain whom has good farming ability but her lategame damage isn't amazing, it's just decent.
It varies more from hero to hero than from stat to stat(N'aix is a hero that is a strength carry but the best attribute for him is attack-speed, this means he'd be broken if he was an agility hero since building agility would give attack speed AND damage, the stats are just another balancing tool like that), but i think this covers a lot.
Also, add me at Janggos goes with everything, you can always toss me a message on steam. (You can probably find me in the southperry steam group).
A bit more on carries:
Spoiler
I think i might've repeated myself a few times, but blargh, my mind's a mess. If you have more questions, just ask.
Thanks for all the help guys. I was right and I do have beta access, so I'll be able to hop on some time over this weekend and early next week. Would be nice to play some of you so I don't go off alone. I have watched a few more videos/guides, all that's left for me to do is to actually get used to the game and hop into PvP.
Well, i'll gladly join you for your first game. I'm about to go to sleep now though, but when i wake up i'll be more than happy to join you.
It'd probably be best if you played some bot-games to get the feel of the game though, the bots aren't bad, their AI is probably the best in the genre. It'll teach you a LOT of the basics.
That's exactly what I'm doing now. I'm saving the more in-depth things for later once I get a feel for the hero pool and know what each hero does. Mainly focusing on adjusting to the game's mechanics for now, because jesus christ everything feels different.
I'll be damned, had a loads of bad teams lately, then i get one where ES fissure blocks allies and pudge hooks allies into enemies.
Oh god this'll be horrible, right?
Wait what, i'm raping... with.. warlock?
Suddenly second most farmed hero in the game with necronomicon 3, aghanim's scepter and refresher.

All very appropriate for the game at hand.
Also, very important:

For the love of god vote for this to be private information, making something like this public is a pineappleing horrible idea.
I thought I had a head start in playing LoL before Dota, but holy fuck I think it made me even more unprepared than the average person.
Skills I thought transferred over:
- When to split push
- When to group
- When to fight
- What to do in lane with regards to role
- Warding
- Map awareness
Skills that actually transferred over:
- Warding
- Map awareness (but not how to react to it)
BECAUSE GOD DAMMIT EVERYTHING IS DIFFERENT
UGH
I have a few more questions/presumptions about how the things I thought I knew how to do based on LoL transfer over into here:
As a support in LoL, laning with a carry involves warding jungle exits, harassing the enemy duo lane, providing sustain (direct and/or in the form of CC), etc. to help the carry farm. Just based on the few games I've played, am I right when I assume that the support generally prioritizes making sure the other carry doesn't farm?
Is split pushing encouraged? In LoL it's an option in a lot of team comps, even if there isn't an ideal pusher on a team, since the carry can usually build an item to do so. It seems much more situational (and punishable, learned that the hard way) in Dota.
How often do you roam when you're in the side lanes and not a carry and when you're in mid?
I had more questions, but I think I'll hold back and just keep playing to learn. Just wanted to get the misconceptions out of the way.
Sorry about that last game... I couldn't pay attention and had to afk for a while because mom was talking to me.
Supports are useful both to help the carry farm and to deny farm to the enemy heroes. Which one you prioritize depends on the team setup and strategy. A somewhat common lane setup is a defensive trilane, where mid and hard lanes are soloed, one support will babysit the carry and pull jungle creeps into lane to deny and push the lane back, while the other support will harass and lurk around to force the enemy(s) to hang back, missing out on exp and gold. Another thing I like to do is roam, which means I don't take a lane at all, but I pick a hero with good level 1 or 2 ganking skills and just run around the map looking for kills.
Split pushing is pretty dangerous and requires you to be able to push fast and join up with your team if needed. Keep in mind that it's easy to get killed if you get caught with a disable. Heroes that are good at split pushing include Tinker, Nature's Prophet, Broodmother, and Keeper of the Light.
In general you should gank from mid when you find a good rune and a good opportunity to do it. Some heroes like Invoker need a lot of levels to come online and are better off just farming unless they get a really good opportunity, though.

This is seriously one of the better explained guides to what you should be doing as a support and what the different supports offer.
Might write up some more later when i have more time.
Guide helps a whole lot, thanks. I'm down to play some time tonight if you guys are.
Yea, i am ready. Just write in this thread when you're on, or find me through the SP group and give me a poke (Janggos goes with everything).
Also, finally added game trailer to first post, no idea why i didn't do that before.
If someone has not seen it yet and is too lazy to go to page 1:

Yeah, PM me too! I wanna play with you guys again :)
Sorry, chrome wasn't on when I was playing Dota last night and then I got caught up with guild stuff in GW2.
Was busy with moving, sorry. I might be able to play tonight if I'm not out, just PM me on Steam.
My first matchmaking game.
2 people on my team quit. The drow on the other team obviously isn't new. Proceeds to steamroll us all. Announces 'lol easy' when we lose.
Urgh
Well that certainly sucks for your first player versus player game, you should add me on steam if you want someone to play with occasionally.
People who smurf tend to be quite arrogant, atleast the match-making is very volatile for the first few games so if a person is playing on a smurf they'll quickly return to a higher level of match-making.
Also: We have a southperry chat room ingame, join it!
It's not necessarily a smurf. Some people are really bad at the game and stuck in pomegranate tier matchmaking but experienced enough to beat complete newbies.
Oh god, I can't stop laughing. Sorry if this has already been posted.

And yes I tried Anti-Mage. I actually like this guy far more than Voidy. I blame his incredible 5 second Blinks to both escape and pursue relentlessly, and auto-attack mana burns. Still haven't used his ultimate effectively though, although it doesn't really matter as much for me when Manta Style is all I need. Also, Spell Shield = NoFunAllowedCasters. However, WHY DOES HIS NAME HAVE TO BE MAGINA? Nothing else to really comment about him. He's squishy to melee, but my god if he isn't a nightmare to face with anyone that relies on magic damage.

I still have yet to do this combo in a real game.

Try easy/medium bot games first, you get to practice and notice how most things go. Medium/hard bots are the best because people won't leave as often, at least from what I've experienced.
My first vs. humans game was with Malthe, Dusk and Polantaris so they helped me with other stuff like what to buy and when to go back and so on.
Getting used to items is the hardest thing ever for me, most of them are situational and when you don't completely understand what other heroes/items do it's baffling.
Oh, also add me on steam: Wordssp
Also, I had a couple games with Treant Protector earlier today and he is quite cool, healing others+towers is awesome and making others invisible and setting up kills with him is easier than with other Heroes so far. I also like how easy it is to last hit/deny with him.
Welp, today was not my day for playing dota.

I've been queuing southamerica/US east servers lately and it's amazing how different it is.
Yesterday's games were awesome, I got to learn a lot in bot games with US players. Of course I got yelled at, called noob sometimes because I still mess up in the most idiotic ways but it's fun and I learn and I feel like I avoid doing the same mistakes over and over again. Right now, I'm having trouble knowing when to go back: most of the times I know it's better to get back but people keep pushing and I follow them thinking "they must know better" but they don't and we just wipe. But I don't want to be the moron that says back when it's perfectly fine to push.
Last two games in latin american servers were pissing me off. People just keep fighting alone, pining 15271057012 times every time they see a hero, and feed, feed, feed. Even if I avoid deaths and farm as much as I can early in the game, they feed so much it gets to a point where there's nothing I can do. Bots get to farm so much that they get their items fast while I'm still halfway to get mine. Not to mention the language barrier, if they talked spanish it might've helped but most of the time it's br and I don't understand what they're saying. I do understand when they're insulting me, though, because they get mad when I die but the whole game they've been feeding enemies is fine. Also, every time I didn't go mid lane every pineappleing support would auto attack or get most last hits (I've been trying carries, Morphling is fun) when the hero I'm playing desperately needs them.
IT'S TROLLING TIME!

Also AR MM.
Now all that's missing is EM and everything will be good in the world.
I've played 3 public matches so far now, and i think i've had someone on a smurf on either team in every game.
I've played a lot of Hard Bot matches with a friend and on Co-op. At the moment the Bots seem more fair lol.
I like Queen of Pain a lot, along with Crystal Maiden and Windrunner. And i've recently had a Lina high lol. Do they have any 'Core' items or is every build different? Queen i've been going Linkin Sphere into Scepter and the other 3 i do like Force Staff and then random from there xd..
Well, a lot of heroes have 'core' items that they simply synergize really well with, but a lot of heroes don't and are more versatile, this often applies to supports.
Both crystal maiden and lina are generally played as supports due to how strong they are early on + they don't need items to scale. As far as boots goes you'll generally want tranquil boots on CM to get a form of hp regen and arcane boots on lina for more mana. Situational items include: Drum of endurance, urn of shadows, forcestaff and ghost scepter, if you become really farmed as either of them euls scepter of divinity synergizes nicely with luna and her delayed stun and scythe of vyse is nice on both of them. Heaven's halberd is also a situational pick-up to deal with an enemy carry that does not utilize manta style or BKB and gets in your face.
Wind runner generally goes for phase boots as far as boots goes and follow it up with a forcestaff to get more mobility.
Situational items include: Scythe of vyse, mekansm, pipe of insight, necronomicon, orchid of melevolance and anything that adds surviveability and some damage. Items like linken sphere can be situationally nice to get and you can also get maelstrom for extra farm ability if you're planning to carry. Really lategame monkey king bar, daedalus and desolator all add nice DPS for wind runner.
Queen of pain can go too many routes to list.
Generally speaking you'll want power treads because her auto attacks mean a lot to her.
Going straight linken sphere isn't optimal in most games and generally speaking you'd rather just get a BKB to deal with disables and magic stuff, aghanims scepter is decent if you're planning to go really late and if the enemy is planning to push.
Other great items include: Orchid of malevolence, necronomicon, forcestaff(If you have to deal with a hero like riki or disruptor with AOE silences), scythe of vyse. And if you wanna go for some more DPS-ish for later on monkey king bar, desolator, daedalus and eye of skadhi are all nice items.
Items are generally situational and varies greatly from match-up to match-up, but in the beginning you should just stick with what you are comfortable with, that is more important as you'll learn when to get what as you play.
Also: http://imgur.com/a/BhaPr custom UI incoming VERY soon. These are dire vs radiant UI changes.
THE ULTIMATE TROLL IS BORN
Behold Troll Warlord
http://youtu.be/Yd3wQ_tmfxs
Thanks for that. I'll try out some different items with them in future games.
I pretty much go Linken first cos of it giving hp/mp regen along with flat stats across the board. The spell blocking part is just a nice bonus. Maybe its because im used to playing LoL but item buys and stats are very different between the 2 games and i feel like in Dota i always need lots of regen due to not being able to go back to base constantly.
You'll generally want a bottle as QoP which should take care of any kind of HP regen you might be looking for coupled with a magic wand.
Mana regen will be completely solved once you have a scythe of vyse or orchid of malevolence.
Linkens is just, a very situational item which is only good if you're playing against a hero with a magic-immunity-piercing disable such as roar from beast master or lasso from bat rider. In 90% of all other cases Black king bar will do you much more good in teamfights.
Generally speaking you shouldn't be losing health unless you're fighting enemies and QoP has a lot of mana to work with. Bottle is standard on her due to being one of the stronger mid-laners in the game with the best rune control in the game.
As far as HP regen goes, mekansm is also nice on Queen of pain. And helps your team loads.
Is anyone having trouble with the client or lagging badly?
Lately the "Find Match" button will disappear, and it takes forever to load anything. Last night, I finished a game and I hit close on the scoreboard that appears at the end but it says that I abandoned that game. Today, I'm trying to create a lobby and clicking on the "create lobby" button won't do anything... I have to restart the game a couple of times every now and then because of all of these things that won't load. Is it just lag or what? :(
Ah, also my Bastion announcer isn't loading automatically like it used to :(
I haven't had any issues.

Never cared for DBR, regardless i'm where i was sure i'd be.
In the top 2% currently. Which still isn't my 'real' MMR, atleast not in valve's system anyway, because i'm currently against people that i am way better than. I win more than i lose, and in 75% of the games i lose it is unwinnable games because of my allies, like these:

I really need to start playing again... i am playing rarely now :(
Sorry, but I don't agree with that. Matchmaking tries to balance the MMR on both teams, but that isn't always possible due to the wide skill ranges among all the people playing (especially since a lot of people queue in parties of 2 or 3). So you may get games where your allies have no idea what they're doing, but that's because it's a lower level game and you're expected to compensate for their lower skill. It doesn't make you better than your actual MMR.
I still win more than i lose, which would imply that i have yet to plateau at a fitting MMR.
And yes, valve's MM sucks because of that, it really shouldn't be putting people with such a wide skill difference in the same game, having 2 people that literally do nothing but go out and die make the game impossible from the get go more or less. I know that they have made analysis and high skill players have a more positive impact than low skill players have a negative impact on a game, but that requires you to pick a hero that can have an impact on the game at the right time, which is mostly earlygame, if your team is utterly losing all their lanes and you're playing a carry or a hero that really can't go change it, the game is just a lost cause most of the time.
I have a few reasons to believe that i can easily get to a higher MMR by just playing. But i am getting utterly frustrated when i am put into a game where no matter what i do, i can not change the outcome of the game.
I'm on the verge of getting into diamond, although DBR will be pointless after a few days due to default privacy. But MM never gets better, even page 1 games have these kind of idiots on them sometimes.
I need to play more vs. humans games:

Holy flying pineapple.
Spoiler
Drums: Good item, multiple drums are amazing.
Vanguard: Mediocre item, pomegranate on ranged heroes generally.
Huskar burning spears: Don't max it, one point for harass is all you need.
That game was awful.
How should I use Treant Protector's ulti? Is it like Tide Hunters: just blink in middle of team fight and root everyone?
I haven't used it that way, I just use it to let everyone escape when they're being harassed. I'm unsure of how/when to use it.
Generally speaking it can be used in two different ways:
1: The aggressive way, you get into the middle of enemies with your invis and then pop your ulti and allowed your allies to wreck targets that can't get free since they can't run and can't get closer to allies.
2: The defensive, use it and run.
Blink isn't needed on treant at all. More standard items are:
Necronomicon.
Mekansm.
Sheepstick.
Shiva's guard.
Refresher orb.
Not all of them, they're just situational and you can pick them up depending on the game. Orchid of malevolence also works on him against certain heroes.
Also about the whole dotabuff incident, this gives good insight in what the pineapple went down:
Spoiler
On a related note, did anyone actually check their DBR? I was curious and apparently I'm in the top 10% of players which was a gigantic epeen boost. I find it amusing that DB went on to release their DBR despite Valve's very obvious objection to the MMR idea, then made a Reddit post crying about how they were "shut down" by Valve the next day.
The move valve made most likely had very little to do with the DBR and a lot more to do with DB using valve's client API and monetizing it, the client API has data that you shouldn't have access to as a third party site. That's why valve's working on improving their web API and cut off access to the client API.
Valve even released a new web API which makes it very unlikely that valve did it just because of DBR since they probably wouldn't have gotten a new web API ready in such a short time-span.
Also i was in the top 2% according to DBR. Meh.
The main problem was basically DB using something that was in the gray area as far as legal vs illegal and valve simply decided to restrict the access to it(To mention one thing, it had information about your friend list, even if you had it set to private in your profile).
DB haven't even tried working with the new web API but decided to state that 'valve shut us down'. It's so silly.
Ah, I see. Yeah, I wasn't buying the Blink Dagger because it's expensive and I was unsure it would help. I don't get that much farm so I usually just buy Arcane Boots, Mekansm, and Drum or Vladimir's Offering depending on what other heroes have got. I think that's my new favorite Hero! His skills aren't flashy but they're cool, last hitting is easy and it's really hard to get killed while playing Treant.
I also played Leshrac again, he's so much fun and it's so much easier now that I understand how some things work. I still need to improve my last hitting skills :P
I just want to sit ontop of treant protector and have him tell me stories of his battles.
That pineappleing voice.

You were killed by a tree! A tree!
Last night, while playing with Dusk and Chrome, Blink Dagger was useful very-late game, there are no trees in the enemy's base :(
Both games, I guess it's useful to save for one in the end :P
Two games in a row, bad choices made. Picked, Anti-Mage while we had no supports and ranged. Tried to middle with a Drow as my opponent, ended up feeding her and everyone else wasn't faring as well as the whole team was a good 5-7 levels above all of us. I try to jungle, they somehow already knew I'd be there; they gave me absolutely no chance to get a Battlefury. 2nd game had an utterly terrible Nature's Prophet that wasn't even using his trees like crazy, and was pretty much feeding. Everyone kept gunning for me when they realized I had a Gem of True Sight to try to stop their Riki and Broodmother. Really discouraged to do anymore games for today. Haven't been this mad at a game in a while.
That sucks. I don't think I have you on Steam. Add me (Otaia), I'm looking for people to play with pretty often.
It happens at all levels of play sadly, i've been playing exclusively AR lately and the experience is a lot better for me.
And yea, anti-mage is too reliant on getting a quick bfury, can hurt if you don't get it.
On another note, had a game where i was MVP on my team with Jakiro. We were trilaning and somehow i ended up with the highest K:D:A AND highest XPM by simply roaming and ganking 24/7.
End score for me was: 17-5-32
I was murdering their drow pretty badly too with necronomicon + liquid fire, allowed me to beat her in 1v1 due to her lack of farm from our constant pushes.
Game ended with dark seer vaccuming everyone into my ult and icepath. Everyone ded.
Was fun, jakiro is one of my favourite supports.
Just checked the game again, i also had highest GPM, what the pineapple.
Like seriously, it doesn't make sense, i was supporting ursa in a trilane.
Most of my last hits came from when we were pushing and i used AOE to push.
Match ID was 108296450
And you should also add me although i'm mostly solo Q'ing atm i am more than willing to play with SPers :f2:
All Random recently came out and it's awesome. A lot of the stupid stuff that happens in all pick doesn't in all random, at least not too bad. People accept what they're given and there's no 5 carries with no one willing to play support. Though it's possible to get an awful team in random (I haven't personally) you can repick for another random hero, giving a pretty good chance to at least make a reasonable line-up. Everyone gets random gold so you're gonna get a courier (unless someone is just stupidly stubborn, but then again you can afford to get it yourself). I also find that the general attitude of the player is better. Of course there are the ragers all of the time but from what I've experienced most of the people are pretty reasonable. I guess a lot of the idiots don't want to play a game type they can't only play their "good" heroes.
I pretty much never get an all-carry team because I play support 90% of the time and my friend that I play with a lot will also pick to the team's needs. We usually have a decent team composition if the other three are somewhat competent, and courier and wards are always bought at my level. For me, All Random means terrible team compositions where people don't know how to play the hero they're given.
I'm guessing that set up is meant for very experienced players, you'd have to be comfortable with every hero to know that you can do well there.
I don't think it's the line up that usually loses games, at least in my experience, it's carries that can't farm. That's the main reason why I don't play carries, it's still hard for me to get decent farm and support don't need that many items/farm.
Also, last night game with Chrome and Dusk and his friend almost all of us were support... well, support/carry for some but still. The line up wasn't bad, but I think it's how you guys played that won us the game.
EDIT: I hate how people abuse bot games to win. They know bots won't do much so they can spend all day jungling... 50 minutes jungling to get all their items. If I just wanted an easy win I'd go easy bot games. I'm trying to learn how some easy carry heroes work and how hard it is to farm/get kills on some of them and that attitude just doesn't help. I like Drow Ranger and Sniper so far, they're easy to farm with and to get kills. I can't get used to melee heroes, they get harrased so easily, especially with plantain teammates.
Does raidcall pomegranate money or something?
http://www.esl.eu/eu/emsone/news/213...with-156-000-/
156k USD prize pool.
Also if you want to learn some easy melee heroes you should try playing N'aix. Such a beast in lane and if you combo him with nearly anything it's a free kill. N'aix + AA is especially cruel. pineapple ton of bonus damage from chilling touch and cold feet is 100% guaranteed to proc unless it's a hero with a blink or leap or weaver/darkseer.
Other 'easy' melee carries include Chaos knight, dragon knight(what is harrass lel), night stalker(Not really a carry in the natural sense, but he's so strong in lane with amazing base stats.
Especially dragon knight, all you do is max flame breath and dragon's blood with one point in dragon tail, leave ult at level 1 untill you can get level 3 ult(The poison is 2 gud for pushing towers).
Get a soulring and couple that with dragon's blood and you got infinite mana for your flame breath spam, makes him a good mid hero as well, it can harass and push lane at the same time, although if you're mid you can go for bottle over soul ring if you're sure you can control the runes.
Oh and for people familiar with YaphetS/PIS (Legendary solo mid player and literally the best shadow fiend player ever, in DotA1 shadow fiend's for fun name was YaphetS)
He's on a DotA team again! http://www.gosugamers.net/dota2/news...evives-yaphets
PIS=Perfect is pomegranate. Same person but it differs which name he's using.

Hearing YaphetS return makes me miss how swag shadow fiend was in DotA1.

It was a fun game with you guys. My apologies on my deaths though, I died 8 times that match trying to jungle and stop the enemy from killing Roshan. The good news though, Agahnims + Nature's Wrath made mob destroying oh so easy.
Indeed, it was fun. Don't worry about your deaths... I could've helped most of the times but I just wasn't there. Still, I don't think you should try stopping them alone unless you are certain you can survive or there's some else that can help you. But yeah, the jungling part was quite annoying of them.
EDIT: I'm in need of a new mouse, the old one I had died a week ago or so... it was comfortable and I liked it. I had another mouse stored for when that happened, but it sucks and it's already dying: it stops responding every now and then. I changed its batteries already but it still happens, which annoys the hell out of me when playing.
What kind of mouse do you guys use?
I use a simple razer mouse, i heard razer deathadder was really good.
http://www.reddit.com/r/DotA2/commen...newell/c878n4b
Gaben on their own and dotabuffs rating system.
I use a Logitech G400. $35, good size and comfort, 8 programmable buttons, adjustable DPI.
I'll see which mouse I prefer next week once I pay credit card bill. I hate its low limit sometimes. If I decide for a Razer I hope the shipping rates aren't insane and that they don't take forever.
Also, last 3 games were awful, especially the one in which Tide Hunter died and quit. Or the one in which I miss-placed the wards... I'll watch vids and practice alone until I memorize the spots.
The other two were just as annoying and I felt so useless and feeding and ugh.
I didn't really like Random Draft, I don't know every hero and having last pick just messes it up more. The game where I picked Dazzle I felt forced to because I didn't even know him (but asumed it was the easiest for me) and the other Heroes I didn't know/ I know they're really difficult to play. The second game, picking Treant was rather stupid... the team might've done better with a different support hero... Almost 200 hours played and I feel just as bad as when I first started.
Believe me, you might not notice it, but you are improving yourself most definitely. You should try playing all random for some bot games, forces you to try a lot of new pomegranate and allows you to get a good idea of what every single hero does.
There's also the AZ challenge, pick all heroes in alphabetic order from A to Z.

I do well in lane so they take advantage of all my bots and win anyway :(
I did have a good game on Medusa though where i got a full build.
I love how people still whine about drow and think she's broken and way too strong.
Especially the people using winrates as an argument.
Spoiler
Clearly warlock is the best hero in dota. Followed by drow and zeus.
Basically, i'm tired of playing against a drow and if we lose they'll blame drow as a hero. Same with if i have a drow on MY team enemies will peach about the drow.
It happens in every single MOBA, there will always be a pubstomper hero that is easy to play with, and people just whine and whine.
