I've never heard of this one, but if it's about chimps eating human babies, it's irrelevant. All non-herbivorous animals, including humans, eat other species. It's not "immoral". KhainiWest Wrote:I'm sorry but both examples are on both sides of the fence. Religion established order because they had someone who was invisible, all knowing, and used to explain unfortunate circumstances that we couldn't understand at the time. Gods were invented to explain the unknown. Later, human rulers used the gods' powers to give themselves authority. Check out the Code of Hammurabi. The only reference to a deity there is by saying the gods made him King. All the laws are human laws and refer to justice in the human world, not a single mention of punishment by divine entities, in this world/life or the next one. If those laws were not backed by the king's own law-enforcement goons, the punishments listed in them would not occur. Cue Monty Python, "Every Sperm Is Sacred". (Also, the males don't resist. One might posit that they are sacrificing themselves for their young - since the females eat them to use their nutrients for the eggs - which is extremely noble behavior). 2) I'm not sure the human method of dealing with excess males (namely: war) is morally superior. Animals react on instincts, not morals. Polar bears(the males) will kill their own young if given the chance due the chance of a free meal. War isn't the result of excess males. Americans don't want an atheist president - DrRusty - 2011-11-09 humans do immoral stuff all the time even though we're supposed to be a higher species. A very small amount of humans are cannibals, as are a small amount of spiders (using the example above). You could argue the point that "immorality" is just the term humans came up with from the lessons learned through evolution, rather than saying being moral was created through religion. They didn't need any gods to tell them Thou Shalt Not Kill or even Thou Shalt Not Steal. Look all over the world: native peoples in all the remotest corners all have the same basic codex: respect each other's lives and property, help each other and especially protect the young or weak. There are exceptions and variations, but basically it's all the same. And, according to Christianity at least, all their gods are man-made fakeries. good story bro/sis, but that is fan fiction. A moral code implies that something is right and wrong/ good and bad. in other words, if someone take a baby and slaughter it in front of people, on a whole we'll feel horror and disgust...a clear sense of wrong. But if someone takes a baby animal, and slaughter it before a group of other same animals, those animals may not even bat an eye. Animal may do things that seems to be infused with "noble" human characteristics, but that's only projecting ones feeling unto something else. im not sure you actually understand what is coming out of your mouth.... you contradict yourself a lot as well as many fantasiful theory(much that i suspect are self made) that doesnt do anything. Luxeraph Wrote:iirc thats to reduce competition, also is less likely that the male of any species kill their own childs. And that makes it less 'immoral' how?.. Even if it's to reduce competition it's still not moral by human standards to kill your own kids. And they will eat their young as well. A lot of animals do things that is far from 'moral' by our standards. Edit: also a lot of felines have been noticed to hunt for fun, AKA killing for the sake of enjoying it, which again isn't very moral. Many eagles and hyenas and other animals commit siblicid. And so on. Americans don't want an atheist president - SaptaZapta - 2011-11-09 heronz Wrote:good story bro/sis, but that is fan fiction. Again, I am not saying animals have morals. I am saying animals have instincts which result in the same behavior we attribute to morals in humans. Humans have the same instincts. Saying that "without religion, we'd be murdering and raping everything to this very day" is wrong. Our forefathers, long before religion, long before speech, long before Homo Sapiens, already didn't murder and rape everything, due to the instincts they inherited from even earlier species. Humans, with their brains, refined these instincts, codified them into consistent laws, some with "godly" authority, some without. This does not mean religion brought order from complete chaos, as religionists seem to think. Also and as an aside, re: killing babies: Check the conquest of Canaan parts of the Bible, and see the moral things the Israelites are commanded to do to their enemies. By God. And the moral punishments He gives those who fail to obey his moral commands. Americans don't want an atheist president - DrRusty - 2011-11-09 I don't think the 10 plagues of egypt were very moral. Killing the first born child of every home, turning the river into blood, or infesting the whole place with locusts seems pretty barbaric imo. Especially when you consider most of them were unnecessary. The Bible specifically says that "God hardened Pharaoh's heart, and he did not let the Israelites go". And then God uses the excuse that Pharaoh is still recalcitrant, to cast the next punishment on all the people of Egypt. It's good to be omnipotent! No one ever said that religion suddenly made everything unchaotic but they formed the foundations and first written laws of social norms. These social norms created also impacted evolution as our society didn't accept stealing, killing, or anything in the bill of rights. I'm sorry but to say that evolution is solely for this is just silly. ...I guess you guys haven't seen the hypothesis that the 7 plagues were all caused by a volcano eruption and it was blamed on god's vengence to a corrupt king? I wonder if you're aware majority of the 10 commandments are kind of the bill of rights. Food for thought. Americans don't want an atheist president - DrRusty - 2011-11-09 If it was a volcano that caused the plague's of egypt then that would be misinformation on the Bible's part and it shouldn't even be in there. There also the theory that Moses didn't "part the Red Sea" but they crossed a shallow part of the river, during a drought, on a windy day. What's that got to do with anything? We are talking about how religion presents itself and its own God. Whether any of it happened at all is immaterial. What is important is that the holy book you're supposed to learn morality from presents God, that is supposed to be perfectly good and moral, as a vindictive, murderous sadist, both directly (the Plagues) and indirectly (ordering the Israelites to kill every last man, woman, and child of certain enemy tribes or towns). Quote:I wonder if you're aware majority of the 10 commandments are kind of the bill of rights. Food for thought. Huh? Half of them are about loyalty to God, and the rest are trivial ("thou shalt not kill". Really? Damn!). The only progressive one is the day of rest, mostly because it includes slaves and farm animals. The bible is filled with all kind of stories of events that people didn't understand. My point, which you all seem to be missing is evolution is not the sole reason for our mordern day society. It doesn't matter if the stories or not are true, religion was even important as a social experience, in fact today, majority of people use the church for that very reason. @above ....God is considered a vengeful spiteful person from the get go. I don't think you understand my point and you think I'm trying to defend the bible. The point of the bible, in my interpretation, which has been extremely manipulated, edited, what have you by man in power at the time, is that essentially whatever pimento you come across will get his fair share eventually. It gave people something to fear if you happen to disregard any type of consideration to your fellow man, did that stop everyone? No, but that was the point I was making. It established written social normalities that are acceptable, and what are not. If you end up with a douchebag from jersey shore stealing your chickens, and he has more power than you for whatever reason, god will take care of it later. He will take out of his personal day to make that guy regret the day he thought he was impervious to repercussions. Kind of like how our local authorties do today. This of course doesn't justify all the bull sh`it the bible did as a scapegoat for people behind the scenes, but that's was my overall point. Evolution itself can't define a social norm because the animal kingdom and humans can only relate so far. Survival of the fittest doesn't apply to us, its the survival of the smartest. Americans don't want an atheist president - Sardines - 2011-11-09 You don't inherit instincts. You inherent genes. Transcription and then translation can result in the production of proteins and other molecules that are responsible for producing hormones and cerebral matter, however instincts are not inherited. They are more or less taught|passed on through nurture over nature (had this flipped lol). Using the human brain for example, as far as neurotransmitters are concerned there is hardly consistency in any particular transmitter from individual to individual despite having the same mental symptom, i.e. depression. Serotonin levels from the cortex of patient were highly variable. Also a depressed parent does not mean the offspring will be born with the same symptom, nor have the same level of neurotransmitter respectively. (Serotonin is assumed to have a relationship with depression. Neuroscience nor cell biology were my specialty.) If we're going to discuss something more concrete such as neurodegenerative diseases, then yes you have autosomal diseases like Huntington's Disease (Remy-chan from House) and sex linked diseases like Klinefelter's. Huntington's can be passed on, however individuals with Klinefelter's often result in the sperm inviability. So it is true that facets such as mental retardation may be passed on to offspring, however I don't believe that this concept is aligned to instinctual thought. Also you tend to misuse evolution a lot in lieu of natural selection. If I were to explain it, I suppose that evolution is the product of natural selection acting on genetic mutants. Natural selection is the weeding out process. Evolution is the progression of a mutant species by meeting the particular needs of the environment and producing viable offspring. Reflex? As complex as getting up and following their mother? Learned behavior? From whom? Or things like a kitten's tendency to play with things and chase them - even if you raise it in a human home and it's never seen cat's play? Or the way certain dog breeds have a "personality"? If you want to call all those things "reflex", that's fine by me. We'll just say animals have "reflexes" that result in seemingly-moral behavior. It's meaningless if it doesn't have mutations to work with, though. What made certain behaviors survive is both their appearance and the natural selection that kept them around and weeded away those that didn't behave that way. |
