I can solve it in under a minute, but I learned from memorising a few algorithms.
To learn yourself, you'd most likely just want to memorise the algorithms for getting the second and last layer in place because it would take quite awhile for you to derive them.

Well, I'm not exactly so sure about the second layer o.o If you use the beginner's method, it's practically one algorithm (plus its mirror) for the edge cubies and some intuition to get the corners in. Although I must admit the LL is tricky for a beginner =X

It gets to a point where the more algorithms you memorize, the better off you are since you get more options. F2L probably cuts your time the fastest since it solves both the top and middle at the same time, although that's probably the most difficult for the average person attempting to solve since it involves the most memorization in steps and possible permutations.

My son was very good at solving it. I think his best was 19 sec. I watched as he did three in a row on stage at his school in less than 2 min's. He memorized many routines and practiced a lot. He's very good at memorizing. He was up to 150 digits of pi. And as we all know these skills are useful in the real world. That is.. if you're from Vulcan. Actually, I'm sure honing your memory to this degree is great, I just don't remember why.

Actually, you can do the first two layer pretty fast by just memorizing 4 F2L algorithms. (I'm at the 30-second barrier at the moment)
If anyone wants to speedcube, I recommend this order of memorizing (after you know what CFOP is of course):
- 4 F2L algorithms, the ones that let you put both the pieces in with the bottom edge orientated wrong
- 7 OLL algorithms, the corner ones (the one where all edges are correct).
- All PLL algorithms, trust me, this helps a lot (not that I got them all, I'm lazy
)- The rest of OLL (hell!)
- The rest of F2L (hell!)
After you solve the rubik cube using CFOP, it's not hard to move on to the Rubik's Revenger, Professor's Cube or even the Megaminx.
(It's not about your intelligence, it's about how well you can remember, i.e. this section uses the wrong name
)

I think it's easier when someone actual teaches you and show you the steps and all. I couldn't understand the online guides, but I learned it in about 10 days or so, when my friend taught me on the subway. I can finish in just under 2 minutes almost all the time with the beginner's method (I think that's what it's called) and I didn't really have to practice.

It is based a lot of memory but you still need to spot when you can use the algorithms you know.

Oh hi I missed this thread first time around
I can solve top two layers easily. Figured out myself how to work the blocks, so I'm sure there are much more efficient ways of doing it. Best I can manage on the last layer is to get it about halfway (I think I can manage to get a + filled in correctly), but I can never get the last blocks in place that I need to without destroying what I had already built.
Never bothered to check out how to "really" do it. I guess I should probably figure out how to work the bottom layer at some point, but I really don't care enough. In fact, I'm not even sure where my cube is.
ps oh someone said something about "solving a cube is about memory, not intelligence"... well, I assure you, I definitely exercised my intelligence a lot more than my memory in all the working I did on my cube. It's only memory if you want to take the puzzle aspect out of it and make a race out of it.
