I first heard the word meme outside the internet. It means a culture phenomenon that is spread. Like a dance, an idea, a saying, behavior, a gesture, whatever. A meme is compared to a virus, the way is spreads from individual to individual. Some say that religion is a meme.
Online I think it means a stupid joke that is passed around and overused.
