Phrygian isn't sad. It's anger or seriousness. A lot of Metallica's songs are written in the phrygian mode.
Here's a prime example of the phrygian mode in use. Just listen to the angry rhythm guitar. This mode always makes good music to scream to.

I'm a geek for sure, but I don't understand that 'at all'. You said it's music-theory? No wonder. I'm not into musical-logic and what not. I'm more of a computer-geek.
