Most likely his job has some type of leave policy, he could probably call out sick on sick leave or a personal day and he'd be entitled to it. Considering he took an entire month off, he probably just used all of his annual leave, he still has two other leave banks that
Although I'm making the assumption he's USA but I'm pretty sure canada/S.America/Europe all have that, but I'm not entirely sure

Oh. The only times I skipped class in HS was when I was bedridden.
I never skipped anything important in college though. It was always those early morning liberal arts classes which taught me nothing I couldn't get out of a book
