Quote:Today, the US House Judiciary Committee has a hearing on the Stop Online Piracy Act or SOPA. The text of the bill is here. This bill would strengthen copyright holders' means to go after allegedly infringing sites at detrimental cost to the freedom and integrity of the Internet. As a result, we are joining forces with organizations such as the EFF, Mozilla, Wikimedia, and the FSF for American Censorship Day.
Part of this act would undermine the safe harbor provisions of the Digital Millenium Copyright Act which would make sites like reddit and YouTube liable for hosting user content that may be infringing. This act would also force search engines, DNS providers, and payment processors to cease all activities with allegedly infringing sites, in effect, walling off users from them.
This bill sets a chilling precedent that endangers everyone's right to freely express themselves and the future of the Internet. If you would like to voice your opinion to those in Washington, please consider writing your representative and the sponsors of this bill:
Lamar Smith (R-TX)
John Conyers (D-MI)
Bob Goodlatte (R-VA)
Howard L. Berman (D-CA)
Tim Griffin (R-AR)
Elton Gallegly (R-CA)
Theodore E. Deutch (D-FL)
Steve Chabot (R-OH)
Dennis Ross (R-FL)
Marsha Blackburn (R-TN)
Mary Bono Mack (R-CA)
Lee Terry (R-NE)
Adam B. Schiff (D-CA)
Mel Watt (D-NC)
John Carter (R-TX)
Karen Bass (D-CA)
Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL)
Peter King (R-NY)
Mark E. Amodei (R-NV)
Tom Marino (R-PA)
Alan Nunnelee (R-MS)
John Barrow (D-GA)
Steve Scalise (R-LA)
Ben Ray Luján (D-NM)
William L. Owens (D-NY)

Basically people are trying to get this bill to not pass because it could ruin the internet's social media.

Sad, true, and disheartening. As usual.

Been getting messages about this from the ECA for quite a while now. It would directly affect some of the people here, since from the way I understand it, streaming game-play would be illegal along with any website that dares to host them or even link to them. Usual DC nonsense. Did what I could as well.

American Censorship Day. - White - 2011-11-16

Huh, while I think there's a TON of absolute garbage and even a lot of slanderous lies and crap online, by no means do I intend to let the government decidewhat is ok and what isn't ok. No thanks overpowered special interest groups.

Would there be loopholes in this bill so it will affect Canadians and people in Europe and Asia?

It'll only affect the sites we watch as in, if the site is american it'll affect us(by us and we i mean people not from the US).

The law will not have anything to say regarding europeans watching european websites.

Every month I hear a stupid bill from the US goverment. And I thought my goverment was bad enough.

To all american southperrians, tell your congress to do all they can to avoid this law. Seriously, this is ....

But that doesnt mean that other countrys would not try to pull something similar, its like a domino effect, once the first domino piece fall down others will follow soon or later...

Welcome to the USA!

Politicians here honestly just waste everyone's time, including their own, CONSTANTLY. Nothing ever gets done because we never have anyone above the ranks of a damn chimp running for anything.

It's always lose-lose here.

American Censorship Day. - Luxeraph - 2011-11-16

Really? With all the crap of the 99% thing they are going to do that now? What will happen if Americans get really pissed off and start doing really stupid things?

If it were to pass I personally expect some serious rioting, as well as for the US to be shitted on by cyber attacks and whatnot.

If this were to pass and 4chan goes down. There goes basically 99% of the land of internet humor and other amazing things.

I mean worse, things that can get them from a long time in jail to even death.

American Censorship Day. - Rick - 2011-11-16

Would the websites be able to avoid this just by moving operations out of America, then?
