One of the big reasons degrees like this exist is to give relevance to military experience in comparison to civilian or government employ. It may be about as relevant as sociology but the intent is to qualify years worth of experience or knowledge in a field in a quantifiable way.
And there ARE actually some surprising things you can learn in this field that are very practical and relevant within daily life. A lot of the "best practices" that the military and government employ come from a combination of theory and lessons learned from past experiences. The difference in what we know now compared to before we entered into war in the Middle East is impressive.
