Great piece of comedy I have read in a long time.

What makes Nexon think it'll work for Maple? It didn't work out well in CA...
What a joke.
What's even more hilarious is how they claim it is a "powerful tool". pineappleing hilarious.
Why is it even POSSIBLE to end process it without Maple shutting down? -_-
because they forgot to hide it.
Good joke Nexon.
This is the kind of thing that hinders legit players, and hackers will bypass in a matter of days.
You mean already able to bypass..Since you know they can like "END PROCESS IT " like what the ???? why would u even allow that if its supposed to help prevent hackers?? Of course they said it would flag your account eventually, but really? Nexon's empty threats can only go so far and this one takes the cake
Edit : Also they said it would not improve in game performance if you end process'd it? For some after the patch it created immense lag and ending it would make the lag go away..ehh..
haha, nexon is so funny when they don't know what they're doing
Exactly. Why isn't the process hidden like HS Pro then? It's just asking to be terminated.
What happens if they flag everybody who ends this process? Then ban anybody who did such a thing with no hope of getting unbanned since they told you not to end it ? :D
I'm guessing that Nexon thinks that saying it poses a risk to your account, i.e. "will instead make you vulnerable to server disconnects and may cause your account to be flagged for File Modification." will keep people from ending the process or finding other ways of getting around it.
Which, really isn't their brightest of thoughts, but no one accuses Nexon of being bright.
I have brighter compact bulbs.
I doubt it actually does, but you could actually use such a process to detect hackers. If the game detects the application is closed, instead of closing Maple, it could send a message to the server that warns that whatever connected account is screwing around with files. Of course, you'd need actual proof before you go banning people (Something I doubt Nexon would do), but it COULD actually be an effective way to catch hackers if you really wanted to.
Of course it doesn't help that this creates performance problems for some players, meaning that they are likely to end it (Even if they don't realize it's Maple related), which is why any account detected would have to be monitored, however if Nexon actually did some good work this could be an effective strategy.
It's obvious that normal hacking prevention isn't working. Adding HackShield Mk.5000 is not going to magically fix it. Using their own, proven useless hacking prevention system though...that's not going to help much either, considering Combat Arms (That's where it comes from, right?) is just as bad and has been using it for years.
Of course their notice is most likely bullpomegranate when it comes to "It will flag your account," and is probably more of a cry to stop doing it. However, if it were ACTUALLY implemented to do the above, it would probably be a more effective strategy than they have now.
Or it could shut down the client and still report it (like the autoban system does). Doesn't that make a little more sense?
Because if you shut down the client you can't catch the people in the act of having modified files during gameplay? 0.o
Exactly what shouri said. If the GMs were actually active (lol, nice joke there), when the reports came in, they could investigate while it was going on. They could immediately determine if someone was cheating, rather than just banning them, and hoping that they were. There's false positives on everything, all the time. Going purely based on some trigger getting set to true is foolish, and only going to lead to issues. Even if they weren't hacking then, repeat offenders of this could be put on a "watch" list, where the GMs randomly check up on them, and then re-evaluate their situation. Since shutting off this new protection is significantly easier than working through/around it, it would be a useful tool to catch hackers.
But the point is that GMs aren't active. If the program catches what it believes to be a hacker, it should obviously DC them, thus preventing them from continuing to hack. This, of course, assumes that the guard can actually accurately identify hacking situations, which it probably can't.
Even if they made it so that it disconnected the player when they closed it, it clearly is already beyond a useless hacking guard, because it doesn't work on CO. Even if it did, it would have been long broken because CO is completely full of hackers. Even if it was a new tool, it would soon be broken. All traditional hacking prevention systems are clearly not working on any of Nexon's games. Adding 100 of them will not fix the issue, it will just make things worse for the few who are legit.
The solution at this point is to be discrete with what the tool does. Letting people close it is basically fooling them into thinking that it's useless, when it's doing it's job perfectly (If that is indeed it's job).
I agree that one of the major problems is that the GMs aren't doing anything, but if by some slim chance they are just lazy...well this would make the job 100x easier for them. It would basically point at players and go, "THIS GUY! GET HIM!" Their job cannot possibly be easier at that point. If this usage of that file does just that...then Nexon has absolutely no possible excuses left for why they can't keep the game secure.
That stupid thing is making me lag like crazy. @_@
