  1. Default Is this a whole new animal species?

No wonder he looks confused: The mystery creature that nobody can identify
    By MAIL FOREIGN SERVICE

If this cute little chap looks a wee bit confused, it's no wonder.

His big wide eyes stare out at the world around him - which in turn is staring back at him.

Because nobody has seen a creature quite like this one before.

Who am I? The unidentifed animal sitting in his cage after being handed in to Wenling Zoo, in China

With a nose that looks more like a rodent's but long, pointy paws and white fur dappled with brown and orange, he is quite unique.

And zookeepers at Wenling, in eastern China, who were handed the animal by an anonymous man, have been unable to work out exactly what species he belongs to.

They think they are looking at some strange type of monkey - but other students of nature might recognise the characteristics of a bush baby.

As he sits in his cage, the creature therefore awaits an uncertain fate.

And the zookeepers sit and monitor his development and hopes he grows up into something slightly more recognisable.

Where did I come from? The rodent-like creature was handed in anonymously

    Awww, this guise looks awesome!

    EDIT:

Looks like commenters in dailymail were smarter than the "scientists" and media. Maybe if China would not filter google searches they could have just searched this up:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cuscus

Pretty much obvious that it's a baby cuscus that was probably brough by someone to China (hence "was handed in anonymously").

I think the zookeepers were confused on what it was because they didn't know how to get profit out of it on the black market.

Google apparently gave me a french wikipedia link first when I googled, for whatever reason, so that's the french name :s I apparently changed the link to english one but still used french name in my sentence.

I took one look at that and straight away knew it was a possum. Sure enough, it is indeed an Australian possum...

They're such a common pest. How on earth could somebody not recognise one? Humans are so stupid sometimes...

For that matter, how did they not even recognize it as a marsupial?

And even sadder, the people in question are zoo keepers. They're supposed to be experts at this sort of thing.
