True, but I was referring more to the flaky logic of "He committed a crime, ergo he had a mental illness." By that crappy logic everyone in jail has a mental illness. Such a statement conflicts with reality.
don't act like mental illness isn't a problem, having a diagnosis doesn't make anyone a special little snowflake, and the fact that people believe that it does is part of the problem.
Mental illness isn't the problem, the broken US mental healthcare system is the problem. Mental Health patients are treated far from "special little snowflakes" For example when a MH patient is in crisis, some states send out law enforcement instead of crisis intervention teams as first responders. Furthermore, the vast majority of MH patients are completely harmless. You are more likely to have a crime committed against you by someone without a mental illness.
speaking as someone who's had to deal with being falsely diagnosed with a mental illness, and also as someone who was forcefully medicated with pills they didn't need, against their will up until they were goddamn eighteen, don't you dare try to take the moral high ground on this one, anakin. I understand those struggles all too goddamn well.
I am not trying to take any moral high ground. I'm just clearing up some common misconceptions and prejudices about an issue that personally concerns me.
