June 10th, day 20
The scene: the sun has just peeked around the few lazy clouds in the sky to let down the golden rays of early evening. Songbirds hold a steady chorus to my left. A creek, so nearly inaudible I may be imagining it, shuffles around sand banks and under a long, fallen pine. Though the day was hazy, the air is crisp and pleasing to breathe. I munch on carrots and sip on water. From the right, mid-century samba music blasts toward me. An older man, Frank, lets loose a "WHOO!" as he changes the song and undoubtedly feels the rhythm in his soul. He had come for fly fishing, he tells me with a modest lisp. But there are no fish today. Maybe tomorrow, somewhere else. He roasts three pieces of chicken and an ear of corn over an open fire. The song changes again. Confident piano chords lead a brisk, controlled bass. A pair of horns take turns adding vibrant flavor and speed - but the bass keeps the piece smooth, sauntering. Seduction is in the air. Welcome to California.
