New to League of Legends? Quick 5 minute Guide
Sup. So you see this new forum subsection and decide to give LoL a whirl. You downloaded the client, made an account (hopefully using some Southperran's referral link) and played the tutorial. So...now what?
In this thread I've compiled some tips and tricks for the basic League of Legends player.
First off-there are two champions you can get for free.
Tristana: http://www.stumbleupon.com/su/1CvlFp...-champion.html
Alistar: http://na.leagueoflegends.com/news/s...hained-alistar
Next, sign up your IGN in the IGN thread. http://www.southperry.net/showthread.php?t=54784 Then add all the Southperryans, ha.
Now for the actual in-game tips.

-- Learn counters and stuff. Review what you know. Keep playing games to get more experience, because this game has so many ways situations can unfold.
-- Practice last-hitting and map awareness.
Up front, I'm going to say this game has a learning curve that's like a cliff. That's not to say that you shouldn't start playing though. Matchmaking tries pairs you up with players that have your approximate skill level, so chances are if they're really newbies, they'll know only just as much as you do! Learn and play at your own pace, and talk to us for advice.
Also, get familiar with the Summoner's Code, which basically says "you can get angry, but you should not rage at your teammates or be a plantain". Don't do things that you'd rather that they shouldn't do to you (includes d/cing or quitting in the middle of a game for whatever reason). Being bad is excusable though, since people have their ups and downs like everyone else =/
DO NOT USE MOBAFIRE.COM FFS!!!
Kajitii here is referring to websites for guides. Good websites for guides are

and

Make sure you view the Featured/Approved guides, as those guides are made by professionals.

Also, get LoLReplay. If you have something overly specific that you want to ask us about and you have an example in a game that you've played, you can either upload the whole game and link us to a download of it, or record it with fraps/dxtory/xsplit and upload it to YouTube and we can look at it. LoLReplay takes barely any resources, so you won't notice any performance dips when you play.
Also also, don't play with Corn. He goes AFK a lot.
Edit: Also also also, if you hit the chatroom button in the bottom right corner (next to the exclamation point) you can hit the join a chat room button and join the Southperry channel (exactly typed as Southperry).
Also about the chat room: once you join chat room Southperry, in the upper-right hand corner you can click a button that'll show give a list of options, including auto-joining chat room Southperry every time you log into the game.

When you finally do reach level 21, the best common rune set up that I can suggest before you really get into the game is Flat AD marks, Flat armour seals, Flat Magic resist glyphs and movement speed quintessences. Later on you can branch into other things like armour penetration, magic penetration and attack speed marks etc.

Oh yeah, and last, buy some goddamm wards. Not as important when you're low-level, but when you get like 20ish, you should always buy at least 1 ward every trip back.
Now if that isn't enough to help you, here are some more in-depth guides.

If you play Warwick, don't max Q last.
Re: New to League of Legends? Quick 5 minute Guide
Re: New to League of Legends? Quick 5 minute Guide
Sustain, Burst and Poke, the trinity of this game.
Sustain refers to having abilities that gives you hp passively or actively: Point in case Warwick Q or His passive, Nocturne Passive,Irelia W iirc, etc.
Burst means doing a crapload of damage in a low amount of time, usually casters champions do their bursting with a cycle of their skills.
Poke just means to hit or harrass the enemy from a distance, either by using Auto-attacks with range, or skills.
Poke > Burst > Sustain > Poke.
There are other stuff to consider like tankyness and pomegranate, but im gonna let someone else talk about it >.>.

Re: New to League of Legends? Quick 5 minute Guide
Junglers have the most impact of a game for the first 12 or so minutes. Use this time wisely and gank and invade as often as you can so your team gets as fed as possible before they do some dumb pomegranate. You do this, and you'll get out of "elo hell" for both normals and ranked games.
Re: New to League of Legends? Quick 5 minute Guide
Protips from the best players of SP.
Malzahar can't carry. He's useless in teamfights. Don't play him.
Garen is the worst champion for top lane. There's no reason to play him either. ZERO scaling.
You're welcome for the IP you've saved. Please gib me referrals.
Re: New to League of Legends? Quick 5 minute Guide
Also, pay attention to any sound cues, similar to visual cues, as those can be used as valuable information at times.

I thought Xin Zhao was the one that had no scaling on his abilities.

I'm flattered.
I would recommend working on a ward section (I can help if you want?). Buying wards is great, but people need to know where to put them. Example: Warding the two mid brushes are great, but if you just place them more or less in the middle, you get a lot less information than placing them on the ends of that brush (depending on which team you're on).

According to the GREAT players of Southperry, he's awful bro.
Check out that ult. ZERO SCALING GENERAL.
Re: New to League of Legends? Quick 5 minute Guide
New people should not have to worry about wards. I never buy wards in my solo queues because maybe 5% of the time I find gankers/junglers. If you play with higher level friends, they'll teach you those things anyway so you won't have to learn them on their own. I think it's best if new people just learn the basic game mechanics and getting used to their champion. After a while you start to pick up on things on what to do and what not to do e.g. when to push a lane and when to not overextend.

Garen scales better on his abilities (because his Q scales and his E scales, versus only Xin's Q), but Xin scales better in the game.
Note that when I mean scaling, I mean abilities get stronger when he buys an item. Xin's ult doesn't scale at all with items he buys. So sssshhh now.

Totally. I agree 100%
1.4 bonus AD on Q and 4.2 on E.
That's ZERO scaling.

1.4 total* AD on his Q and 4.2 bonus* on E. It's only a 4.2 bonus if you sit in it the entire time however. There are still better solo-top tanky deeps (Riven, if you insist on playing manaless)
And to be a good scrub, both pomegranate Zhao and Garen are in Tier 4 on Elementz tier list. I'm clearly not the only person who thinks they're trash.

"And to be a good scrub." (lrn2read plz) I know listening to Elementz is stupid herpaderp. I read his tier list to even see an opinion of what other people think of champions.
My ELO is low because I spend significantly less time playing Normal games. Notice how I've played a total of ~500 Normal games? I don't play real people a lot, I spend more time theorizing. I am a thinker, not a doer. I can't be bothered to play 2k+ games like you.
So, how about you give real advice instead of just trolling others? kthx

That's just one person's opinion. A lot of high elo players disagree with his list.
Reading over his list again made me realize how I haven't seen a lot of Gangplanks lately. ಠ___ಠ

Number of games played doesn't mean you're a better player, either.

YOYAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCC
If you play like 2k+ games and have a 51% win rate, you'll get to 2k elo. YEAHHH, ELO GRINDING.

Technically any ability with percent-based damage scales on its own.
Kog'Maw's Level 5 Bio-Arcane Barrage does magic damage equal to 6% of the target's maximum HP. Based off of enemy level ups alone (from 1 to 18), the average increased damage Kog'Maw's BAB does is roughly 90.
Level 5 generic ability that does X base damage and 0.7 AP scaling. To get the same amount of damage increase, you'd have to buy 129 AP. It's not too difficult to get that much AP, but it is stuff you sink your gold into. Kog'Maw doesn't have to do that.
