Disney buys Lucasfilm and plans Star Wars VII, VIII and IX (2015~2017)

UPDATE: Disney announces in an investor conference call after today's announcement that they intend to make more than one new Star Wars movie, beginning with Episode VII in 2015 followed by Episodes VIII and IX "every other year" and then "we'll go from there."

well, id like to recomend that we all watch, and enjoy, the great masterpiece that is starwars 1-6. Thanks Disney, way to ruin my favorite movie series of all time.

4-6 were the original 3 though. Unless you meant that those are the only 3 star wars movies you know and implying that episode 4 is actually episode 1.

I'm incredibly happy that Star Wars is getting taken away from GL. As weird as this may sound, GL is the worst part of SW. His childishly greedy writing for Episodes I-III ruined a lot.

I'll reserve judgment on Disney taking over until I see Episode VII. They have done a fantastic job with the Marvel comics and if they do half as well adapting SW EU books to the screen I will be paying to see these movies for years to come.

At the same time, I can't help but fear that any further movies will be even worse...

That’s funny I was just talking about an Episode 7 at the weekend. It could be a good thing. Disney have done alright with Marvel so far. We might get something good out of it. If not it’s not like Star Wars isn’t already ruined anyway.

I think I've read somewhere that George Lucas wanted to make the next episode but completely different, like 1,000 years into the future. Sith lords are in power and the Jedi's are dwindling in numbers.

Then again was this a game?:f6:

Disney is a huge company, there's no way to predict the quality of these films without knowing a little about who's actually involved.

You're probably thinking of SW:The Old Republic which is set in the distant past. Although both Sith and Jedi are numerous.

Side note: Did Scarlett Johansson as Mara Jade occur to anyone else for Ep VII? Yum...

ok, after doing some research, and thinking, iv come to a slightly different conclusion. As much as we hate to admit it, Lucas will die/need to retire soon. Theirs no two ways about it. Hes almost 70 years old, and he cant make moveis forever. That being said, i guess i have to agree that Disney is a y good company to continue the legacy. However, i still don't like the idea of making new movies, unless they are really good....

You're right, which is why I'm not really bothered by this new. At best, he'll be a "consultant" for the next few movies. There's a massive existing Star Wars canon in the form of books and games for them to base movies on without Lucas. How cool would it be if, say... Joss Whedon directed a Star Wars movie in the next decade?
