Both. I generally prefer subs, but there's a couple dubs I like, namely Ghost in the Shell:Stand Alone Complex and Shinesman. I haven't seen Shinesman subbed, but I hear the dub is by far the better.

I prefer subtitles. Especially since some dubbing is absolutely horrible, that being said, there are a few good dubs of anime, FMA and Trigun... Eureka Seven wasn't all that horrible when I watched it.

Then again, I prefer all foreign things to be subtitled rather than voiced over, I think it retains nuances that can't be well expressed otherwise.

completely agree with jackk. I was so excited when bleach was finally comin out in english; I stayed up til midnight for when the episode was gonna come on. About 15 minutes into it, I shut it off and went to bed.

Full metal alchemist was pretty good dubbed; I gotta say they did a damn good job of picking their cast. Another anime I thought was good dubbed was dragon ball Z =D. That was definently one of the best dubbed animes ever. Whoever picked the cast of dbz definently did a good job.

Dattebayo isn't much better. Both words essentially mean nothing and are just catch phrases Naruto uses. I find the anime / character pretty horrible / dumb in general, but I don't see why one phrase receives crap whereas its "untranslated" counterpart is rarely noticed.

I meant that he had an annoying phrase in the Raw / Subs as well. Dattebayo was what they translated into Believe it! - both mean nothing, they just needed something so Naruto wouldn't move his mouth without words coming out, so it wasn't "added" per se.

Most of us don't understand (more than a few phrases of) Japanese, therefore the spoken lines are seen as white noise - we don't actually listen to any of the words. We can take the voice acting and ignore little verbal tics/mannerisms that would be jarring or annoying if we actually spoke Japanese.

Or... that could just be the Japanese language flowing more smoothly than the English language thanks to its morae :f3:

For 90% of the anime I watch, I prefer subs. With most of the fansubs, those working on the episode throw in any explanations necessary (a prime example is Yakitate!! Japan, where nearly every episode has a play on words--which in English just isn't as funny!)

Also, I don't like having my volume up too high so being able to read the subtitles is something I greatly appreciate.

Unlike many people here, I didn't like the voice actors for the dubbed FMA. The brothers sound far too young :|

I guess I'm a rarity. I prefer dubs and only watch subs of a few shows that I didn't feel like waiting for the ending of an interesting storyline. Alternatively, some of the subs I watch are because the dub for whatever reason stopped showing partway through the series.

The quality of dubs have gotten progressively better over the years. I remember watching Escaflowne and Sailor Moon. Good god, those dubs were horrible. Now I look at Death Note, and Bleach and not only is it tolerable, but I can tell that the voice actors really get into their role. I really like that a lot about the voice actors of today. Seriously, I think I could fall in love with some of them (I'm a huge seiyuu fan if you couldn't tell lol).

So.. yeah. For me, it's mostly a toss up. For certain anime, I definitely prefer subs. Yakitate!! Japan as Lyssa mentioned, and my new personal fave, Gintama. Gintama would be incredibly hard to dub with all the references to Japanese culture. It also involves a lot of word play. It's one of the few anime that I feel would be ruined if it was ever dubbed.

But subs aren't all that great either. If you want to enjoy watching the original, learn Japanese and watch it raw. Easier said than done, I know, but I've noticed some horrible subbing by some unknown group for Gintama. Awkward translations, and for some episodes the subs were literally the script taken straight from the manga. Just makes you wonder how much of the subs you watch are accurate in their translation. Botched subs are worse than bad dubs in my opinion.

If it's a well done dub then I will watch the dub no matter what. Trigun and Cowboy Bebop come to mind for good dubs. Otherwise I stick to subs mainly because they're easier to get on my computer regardless.

Subbed, only because I hated see watching bleach dubbed because IMO the voiceovers sucked compared to the original voices. But once I saw a dubbed episode of Sailor Moon and it was really good, the only part I didn't really like was the fact that Artemis' sounded like a surfer dude from California.

I don't know about the recent dubs, I try to stay away from them so I don't feel like smashing something up when they totally mutilate my fav character's voice.

I love both subs and dubs. When I watch dubs, I've noticed it's a lot easier to follow the story because you're concentrating on what's actually happening instead of what people are saying. And most of the dubs these days are really good. They try a lot harder to sync the animation with the English sound.

I prefer to watch subs only on shows that either sound better in Japanese, don't have an English track, or when the show contains a lot of word play and cultural / language references. One example is that I love the English cast for the Beck anime, but I greatly prefer the Japanese version because there are so many occasions where the characters speak engrish and the dub doesn't capture it properly, losing one of the things I really love about the show. I thought they did a really good job translating the songs, though.

Also, some shows are better dubbed in English than the original Japanese. It doesn't happen often, but it's definitely possible. The main example that comes to mind is Nerima Daikon Brothers, which is HYSTERICAL in English, but when I tried to watch it in Japanese, it's just kinda wishy-washy and boring. To me, the jokes just seem to work better dubbed.

Most of the times, Subs are superior as the Dubs don't capture the right voice for the role. However sometimes dubs shine, Like in Gundam Seed, Inu-Yasha and Full Metal Alchemist.

I rarely watch anime but I guess an opinion is better than none, hah.

For me, I like both subbed stuff and dubbed.

I'm not one to give go hysterical if the English VA isn't doing it 100% exactly like the Japanese VA. If the voices match the characters', I'm fine.
I also don't care about little imperfections like mispronunciations of certain stuff. If it's not key to the plot, why bother.
Some dubbed anime I've watched have pulled off stunts and jokes better than their Japanese counterparts as well.

Contrary to popular belief, Japanese VAs are not perfect, nor are they automatically better than the English VAs because of that.


I'll really only watch subbed stuff if;
1) It's only in subs
2) The Japanese cast pulls of funny pumpernickel.
3) If the dub is in part of one of the below paragraph

Below paragraph;
1) Most anime that are being dubbed for a mainstream audience. They usually get cheap, crappy voices for the 300+ episodes they have to dub -- Most of which contain screaming, blood, and charging of attacks.
2) Are being dubbed to be on a children's block. Censors, worse voice overs than the crappy local commercials you see on channel 44.

Also, Naruto/Mainstream dubs =/= every other dub. Don't base your final conclusion of all dubs based off one badly done dub.
Really irritating when I go through some sites to see just 14,023,122 comments that pretty much contain people bashing all dubs because the naruto dub made their ears bleed.

but... datteba is like a girls phrase, it's something that they might use when they argue for something, or they are anxious or slightly annoyed. Doesn't have to be datteba,it can follow any noun or verb.

e.g.
Sakura from CCS trying to wake up Kero because he was napping in mid-air, and she wanted to ask him something.
Sakura: Kero-chan? Kero-chan tteba~~!!

I remember the dub to End of Evangelion, when Shinji screams inside EVA-01... made me want to throw something at the TV. Why can't they have ladies with low voices dub for the young boys instead of guy VAs? OMG, it was truely horrible. The dub for Rei didn't quite grasp the feelings of Rei, that made her horrible as well, consider the original VA is my fav VA of all times, Megumi-sama is Goddess of VAs!

Edit: not to mention they sometimes hack a whole chunk of an episode out, they even changed the personality of a character. Card Captors? =____=
They tried to say that korokke are dumplings! WTH! Who the hell deep fry dumplings? The way they pronounced Sakura and kero-chans names are also very very horrible.

Well. Cutting an entire episode out doesn't really have much to do with subbing or dubbing, its more of the editing process overall. I think a few Pokemon episodes were pulled, and huge chunks of One Piece were completely slaughtered due to 4Kids.

Whose idea was it to put the episode where Shaoran Li comes in as the FIRST episode?! D:< (That IS how it was in the US version, right?)

Anyway, I prefer subs for the most part but some animes are still quite good dubbed. Death Note and FMA are great examples, I can watch them subbed or dubbed and it'd make no difference for me.

Dragonball Z is another one... except I watched it in Spanish. I can't stand the US DBZ. o_O So when it comes to Dragonball or DBZ, I either watch it dubbed in Spanish or watch the original with English subs. Neither version's censored. :B
