View Full Version : Migrant's: Islander Guide

Migrant
2008-07-02, 01:47 PM
I originally made this guide before GMS Maple Island was expanded the first time round, and haven't quite finished updating it to the new island. I submitted this guide recently to Sleepywood on my account "Islander" (the name was taken on this forum) but was later permenantly banned for "multi-accounts" (no idea why). This guide is also posted on MapleTip and is updated frequently.

Intro
Firstly, please do not copy any part of this guide without my permission. If you wish to publish this somewhere else, please contact me via PM.
If you think something is missing from, or you would like me to change a part of this guide, please tell me, and I will see what I can do.

This guide does not deal with the use of Maple Trade System.
Thank you.
-------------------

What is an Islander?
An Islander is someone who never leaves Maple Island. A Beginner who spends their MapleStory life trapped within the boundaries of Maple Town, Amherst and Southperry. Someone who never steps foot in Lith Harbor.
-------------------

I. The Pros and Cons of Being an Islander

Pros

You get to meet a lot of other Islanders that you may never have met had you left Maple Island.
You get to show off - People love seeing Islanders and you get a lot of F2's.
People will be very appreciative of you if you help them out (getting 10 orange mushroom caps etc..).
You will get famed frequently by other Islanders.
Cons

Slow levelling past level 20.
You will only ever encounter the same 7 enemies.
People may call you a hacker, especially if your level is above 30 (you get used to ignoring them).
Equipment is quite hard to come across.
-------------------

II. Creating an Ideal Islander

Appearance
As an Islander, your hair, face and skin colour cannot be changed once your character is made, so make sure you chose the look you’d feel most happy playing as - you wouldn’t want to get to a high level and detest the way you look.
The clothes don’t really matter, pick what you feel is right; if you don’t like the way you look with these clothes, you can always buy new ones from Southperry.
For a weapon I’d recommend either the hand axe or the wooden club, as these both have a higher range than the sword.
Stats
As an Islander, the only stat that really matters to begin with is STR as you can hit every monster on the island with minimum DEX, INT and LUK.
There are various ‘builds’ that totally ignore STR, but regardless the ideal stat distribution for would be:

STR – 10-13
DEX – 7-4
INT - 4
LUK - 4

As long as your STR is 10 or more, you’ll make a fine Islander, and be able to level up pretty swiftly.
Ability PointsPure STR is the most common Islander build. For this you can forget about DEX, INT and LUK and only add points to STR when you level up – if you are making your Islander for the first time, this is the build you should probably go for.

Level 1: 13 STR, 4 DEX, 4 INT, 4 LUK.
Level 10: 58 STR, 4 DEX, 4 INT, 4 LUK.
Level 25: 133 STR, 4 DEX, 4 INT, 4 LUK.

However, there are 3 different builds for the Islander that you may also want to follow:

Pure DEX is the disregard of STR. Keeping with the dice-roll stats of at least 10 STR, the Pure DEX Islander will only add points to DEX. The point in this is to eventually have enough minimum damage to be able to one-hit kill Orange Mushrooms and Pigs every attack you make.

Level 1: 10 STR, 7 DEX, 4 INT, 4 LUK.
Level 10: 10 STR, 52 DEX, 4 INT, 4 LUK.
Level 25: 10 STR, 127 DEX, 4 INT, 4 LUK.

‘Mage-Lander’ is the addition of 55 INT and 20 LUK to enable your character to equip the level 18 Metal Wand (see below for equip stats). For this class, it’s best do add purely to STR until level 3, then start adding to LUK, then finally to INT, then, when you have enough INT and LUK, adding to STR again.

Level 1: 13 STR, 4 DEX, 4 INT, 4 LUK.
Level 10: 28 STR, 4 DEX, 15 INT, 20 LUK.
Level 25: 63 STR, 4 DEX, 55 INT, 20 LUK.

And of course, there’s the STR and DEX build, whereby you add STR and DEX in order to keep your minimum and maximum damage high. This build is used for the same purpose as Pure DEX – to eventually be able to one-hit kill Orange Mushrooms and Pigs no matter what.

III. Skills

Beginner Skills

Level 1: MP –10, Recover 24 HP in 30 seconds.
Level 2: MP –20, Recover 48 HP in 30 seconds.
Level 3: MP –30, Recover 72 HP in 30 seconds.

Nimble Feet
Master level: 3
Enables the character to move around quickly for a short amount of time.
Time between skills: 15 minutes.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v240/MJmd132004/skill_0001002_icon.png

Level 1: MP -10, +10 speed for 4 seconds.
Level 2: MP -15, +15 speed for 8 seconds.
Level 3: MP -20, +20 speed for 12 seconds.

You will rarely use these skills so I can only say add what you wish.
As a Beginner you get 6 SP points to add into them, so it's only possible to max two of them.

VII. The Pros and Cons of Using Maple Trade System

Pros

Better equipment gives higher damage.
Speed and Jump boosts allow quicker training.
Less need for cirtain stats. For example; Metal Wand needs 20 LUK and 55 INT - with MTS you could buy equips that give such attributes.
Cons

Nothing to hunt for, thus training gets boring faster.
You will be asked how you got your equips far more often than someone who doesn't use MTS, and you'd have to explain to those unsure what MTS is.
You need Nexon Cash - usually obtained using real-life money.
You will be called a hacker far more often than those who don't use MTS - especially if you use Gachapon-only equips.

Space reserved.

Blake just had to post, didn't he -.-
Ah well, I guess I'll keep this here anyway, just incase I ever reach the word/picture limit.

Thanks though, Blake :)

Edit: HA! After all this I forgot to add Metal Wand xD

Can you put spoilers around the massive list? It's really annoying scrolling pas it all. D:

I'd also suggest a link to the MT guide, just for the sake of it. :P

Other than those two things, it's a great guide. :D

Tryst, you can also ask Fiel to delete Blakey's post. o.0

Can you put spoilers around the massive list? It's really annoying scrolling pas it all. D:

I thought she was done xD

Also Deleting fails in vBulliten. It just makes the post smaller and say
"This post was deleted at the request of the administrator"

>_>

Spoilers don't work on all forums. I want to make this guide as ideally flexable as possible so I can put it on as many forums as possible. If I was to do different BB/HTML codes for each forum, it'd take me hours just to add one weapon to the multitude of copies of this guide there are on the internet.

Also, I would link to the 'main' topic, but I don't know if Fiel would want me linking to an outside forum. Also, this topic should hopefully stay just as updated as the MapleTip one, so don't worry :)

Thanks, also!

As long as you aren't bashing on Maple Tip, I think you'll be fine. D:

Just add a few Spoiler tags, then update this one. Copy it all from here and paste it in Word, and delete all the "[spoiler]" using Ctrl + H. Wouldn't take long. :o

MapleTip and this forum aren't the only forums this guide is on T_T
There are at least 4 others.

z3, Maple Tip, Sleepy?... Uhm, what others? :o

Fiel's cool and anti-drama, so I doubt he has issues with you linking to any forums, assuming you're linking them for a logical reason, aka not Ads.

I don't like linking to other forums on forums anyway; especially when they're both to do with the same thing - MapleStory.

Very good and helpful guide.

Ya know what's funny? The guide is probably bigger than the island itself.:D

Updated slightly.
I might do a "pros and cons of MTS" later.

Added "Pros and Cons of using Maple Trade System" - if anyone has any other Pros or Cons I'd be happy to add them.

Edit: Sorry for the double post.

"Slow levelling past level 20."
It was either you or Blake that said Islanders level faster to 30, grinding wise, than off Islanders. o.0

I've said that before. It's true in my view. But going by all the level 14-19 players who are already struggling, I thought I'd better leave it at that.

-------------------

I was afraid of this. The bolded part is based on opinion and feelings.

Adding a simple "in some people's eyes" after it would fix it, no? :f2:

No, it might be more appropriate if she adds that its HER opinion and not everyone else's, or better don't include that comment at all.

This is a guide, not a critique of islanders.

What do you mean?
I'm going from experience of having both a non-MTS and an MTS Islander.

Naw, it's the level 10 and under people. Saying I found a shirt from a snail is reasonable because often they have too, but explaining how I got this weird item from Trade is surprisingly difficult.

As Roses said, it's the level 10 and under players who are impressed and unsure about seeing an Islander. An aweful lot of level 10's and under don't have a clue what Maple Trade System is and are usually too ignorant to find out. "Drops" is far easier to say than having to explain what MTS is - you can say "drops" quickly, but by the time you've finished explaining what MTS is they'dve already left the map.

Personally I've never really liked this guide; I don't think it's specific enough. It might help if you added a map-recommendation section for islanders who want to hunt specific monsters for their drops. And you could even make a more specific training section that includes map names. Though the difference is minuscule, some Maple Island maps ARE better than others for training.

I haven't played my Islander since GMS began...

I think you should change this to: I haven't been playing my Islander since GMS began...

It sounds like you don't play GMS at all, unless you meant for it to mean that.

There are 8 monsters, not 7...
You added Stump to the monster list and the drop list, but you did not change the number. Lol.
