As you know, M.ATK Shields are extremely expensive, a regular one being 450m (7/14). Is it worth buying one for yourself or scrolling one? I just calculated and it takes around 270m to scroll one shield. Is it a necessity to a magician's life?

It would definetly help, but not necessary. You could spend that extra money doing more cost effeicent things, like zhelm, earrings, etc. Whichever gives you more stats for the lowest cost.

Not in any way, shape, or form.
In my opinion that money could be used more efficiently on a different piece of equipment.

There are better ways to spend your money, work on other equips first...I think shields probably have one of the highest price:stats ratio. I'd discourage scrolling it yourself, if only because my last maple shield broke on the 7th slot at 5/10 :f4:. Might as well guarantee yourself reloots and scroll your zhelm first. :P

Scroll your shield last.
Generally you want to scroll the cheapest first. If the scrolls are the same price, go for the one with less slots first.

Looks like the posted the exact same thread on Sleepywood, so just go there for my reply. The gist of it is that if you're not lukless, consider shield luk scrolls instead.

They aren't but if you want to be godly, yes unfortunately :(

I think you can do decent damage. Refer back to the pm reply I sent back Kevin, about my friend ;D

Shields are most definitely on the auxiliary list of mage equips.
Like Face and eye equips...
Focus on things that give you more bang for your mesos...
Like Earrings Weapon Glove MAYBE a glove... etc...:glitter:

I feel that your definition of "decent" would not be very feasible with the normal non-merchant mage.

The typical rule of thumb is, as stated earlier, to scroll cost-efficient (i.e., scroll whatever is cheapest while simultaneously the best for your stats to scroll).

The tough thing about shields is the looming anniversary event. The whole shield market was thrown out of wack this year because Maple Shields didn't drop, nor was the Maple Leaf upgrade system implemented that can make Maple Magician Shields (essentially Maple Shields, just with +2 INT base). Without those, the market rose to the prices of shields you see now.

With the anniversary coming again so soon, it may just be best to scroll the cheaper things now (earring INT scrolls seem to be down a lot), and wait for the event. Personally, I've bombed over 1-2b of shields and scrolls trying to make a Maple Shield before I, on a whim, made my current 9/18 shield.

It's just awfully hard when things are so expensive, and so unless you are swimming in mesos from a recent 12 att PaC sale or something, now's probably not the time.

LOL, shields... I scrolled my shield for LUK. That's right, LUK! It barely cost anything because I only needed a couple of points to hold a Blue Marine, and the first 70% I tried worked. I'll probably be using this staff (or a better scrolled version) until 130, when I hope to have an Ice wand. :f6: Those don't require any LUK, so I may then start resetting mine... or I may not. My base LUK is 73 because I didn't know any better at first, and only stopped adding to it at level 70. :f3:

Being cheap, I certainly don't plan to spend billions buying or making a shield. (I don't have billions, so that decision was easy.) This summer we'll see if we get the Magician Shields. If we do, things may get a lot easier. Buy shield scrolls when you can find them cheap, and hoard them for a few months while waiting for the anniversary. For end-game equipment, we will all want every point of Int and MA we can get, so you might as well start now.

(@FrozNlite, I hadn't noticed about the earring scrolls... now might be a good time to make me some better ones!)

And I see you're in Khaini, too. Right before sc started I saw a 30% sold out for 6m, which, while seeming low, is probably going to be the new standard price in the server within the next week or two.

Currently they're 6-8m a pop, which is not bad at all considering where we've been BEFORE with those scrolls...

An int shield is good but not needed. I got my shield before int scrolls were out. Yes i'd wish i had did an int shield, but my luk shield will do. It's a 17 luk panlid. (5 30% and a 70%). I can saftly say i would NEVER 30% a maple shield for int >_>"

People like Zoecherry got to obscene levels on 1x and before shield ma att, (and helm int and a lot of other things) came out. The luxury of training at Newts and Skels, and 4th job for that matter, is only a year old. The idea that you "have to" have something like a 7/14 shield is an illusion created by Nexon to milk you for money. I 2hkoed Newts, took off my equips and put on my 3 below average clean black umbrella and I STILL 2hkoed Newts with all my gear off. You need 2hko newts a lot more than you need the shield or overall or whatever. Lukless mages are a good way to go in my opinion. You are more dependent on lvl than gear, and your MP will be very good too.

i found some 60% earring int for 2m-4m. currently my best scrolling job IMO, 5 int 9 matk 2 slot cecilias. i was expecting them to cost more because of hp wash/ lukless mages but was happily mistaken ^_^

Honestly, in the end, you'll be either killing newties or skeles from training, and as long as you 2 hit, it really doesn't matter. They're not REQUIRED, but they do help. Make sure the shield is the last on your list if you do need it, since everything else is much less expensive then the shield. I am basically finishing all my other equips first, and if I see a really cheap shield matk, I'll get it and hoard them til I feel ready to scroll.
