View Full Version : A Look at Monster Book

I often see people asking just what exactly the Monster Book is... And since, for KMS, it came out just before pirates, it's quite logical to assume we'll get it soon. That and, you know, the hotkey already being in game.

So, here's a guide to the Monster Book and its ins and outs!
essentially, when the Monster Book is implemented, everyone is given a "book" (It does not appear in your inventory nor does this system in any way impact your inventory space.) which can be opened, by default, using the B key. Upon opening it, you'll see this:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v204/Isaac_mage/Maple0111-4.jpg
Well, yours probably won't open to Mano :p Essentially, you will see grayed out slots for many monsters. The colored tabs on the side of the book represent different level ranges. They aren't as exact as you would typically expect... The level ranges are rather rough. Usually, it's 15 levels per tab. IE 1-15, 16-30, etc.
The red tab is 1-15
The Orange tab is 16-30
The light green tab is 31-45
The dark green tab is 46-60
The light blue tab is 61-75
The dark blue tab is 76-90
The purple tab is 91-105
The black tab is 105+
The yellow tab is designated "Special", I'll get into that in a minute.

All monsters have 5 different cards which you collect in order. Cards look like this when you get them:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v204/Isaac_mage/02380000infoiconRaw.png
and are dropped at a really low rate. Note that the background of the card corresponds to the tab it will go under in the book. For special cards, the background reflects the color it would fall under, if it didn't go in the special tab. If you train on a monster for any extended period of time, you'll easily obtain all 5 cards, however for certain monsters (Such as Fierry, Dark Jr. Yeti, Jr. Boogie, and so on) which have terrible spawn rates, this is a big problem. To get the card to become colored, as opposed to grayed out, and count towards your unique card total, you only need one, so as far as prospective collectors are concerned, I would recommend only worrying about 1 of each card, at least initially.

As for what the cards do, it's rather straight forward:
The first card of a monster you obtain adds its picture to the book.
The second card adds its HP/MP.
The third card adds the Lore of the monster, its level, "Form" (IE Animal, spirit, undead, etc.) and any special notes about the monster (Half damage from electrical attacks and so on. It's usually either boss status or elemental attributes)
The Fourth card provides a nearly complete drop list. I say nearly complete because certain items are omitted (The most common of which is skillbooks. I don't know if this has changed as of late).
The fifth card gives a complete list of every single map the monster appears in, and for one hour increases the experience of that monster by 15%. After the fifth card, the number over the card in the book will change to a medal instead of a 5.

While cards will continue to drop after you have collected 5, no benefit will be gained from looting additional cards. Thus, it'd be kind of you to call any party members, buddies, or guild members who may be nearby and want the card if you can't use it.

Also, it's not particularly significant, but it's worth mentioning that the book will gain additional animations for each monster when you get more cards. IE, the first card is only the stand animation, second card adds the KB animation, and so on.

In regards to the last category, Special cards. Two different varieties of cards fall into this group: Boss cards and event monster cards. Boss cards are pretty self explanatory. Most bosses, from Mano on up to Pink Bean, are found in this category. Not all, however. The 3 King Goblins in Korean Folk Town, Rombot of Eos Tower, and MT-09 of Omega Sector aren't in this category. I'm not sure why these bosses were specifically excluded, but they were. As for Event monsters, the only ones that have cards so far are Kid Snowman (the small summoned one) and Lost Rudolph, both of which were Christmas event monsters. When your card total is displayed, it will say two numbers, one being the total number of cards of all categories, and the other being the number of Special cards. This is something I'll get into later as well.

When a card drops, and you loot it, you'll sometimes see this happen:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v204/Isaac_mage/Maple0043-2.jpg
each card has a special ability associated with it, which will last for an hour after you loot it. This happens for all 5 cards of a monster, and every monster's ability is different. The quality of the ability is directly related to the level of the monster. For example, a Lunar Pixie increases jump by 1 when in Orbis for an hour. A Bear from Mu Lung increases jump by 2. That may not sound particularly useful, but some of them are extremely nice. Nependeath's card increases the drop rate on honey (Reportedly by as much as 10% O_O).
Here's a list of all the cards currently in the GMS data, and their effects:

Additionally, there's the issue of exclusive areas. Currently, there are 2 versions that I know for sure have monster book in working order. One is JapanMS, and one is ChinaMS. So far, when a version gets the Monster Book, they immediately create cards for the monsters in their original area. JMS did so for Zipangu (Mushroom Shrine, Showa, and Kaede included.), and CMS did so for their areas (Shanghai Wai-Tan, Shaolin Temple) also. The interesting thing is that, because CMS has Zipangu, they got the Zipangu monster book cards as well (giving them the largest Monster Book to date.) Given this information, it's not unreasonable to assume that GlobalMS, upon receiving the Monster Book, will create cards for Amoria, NLC, Mansion (heck, depending on the next event patch for KMS, these might get created.), and Crimsonwood monsters.

Some other cool notes about the monster book:

You can set it to open to a specific card if you want. People tend to do this with the cards of their favorite monsters and/or really rare cards that they're proud of obtaining. You can also undo the setting and return the default page to its opening page.
The status of your Monster Book is visible to everyone, in the same way as Pet level and closeness. It lists the total number of cards you have collected and the number of special cards you have. Additionally, it shows a picture of the cover of your book, which changes color according to the level of your book. That's right, the book has levels. In my experience the level of the book goes up approximately every 11 cards collected, but this needs more experimenting. There are 8 covers for the book, and they all match up to a tab color (except yellow).
There's a pretty cool effect that appears over your head each time you loot a card. Everyone nearby will know when you get one :p
Card rarity seems to be related to level. The monsters in the first tab, snails and slimes and such, are relatively easy to collect, whereas the monsters in later tabs are much harder, even if they have better spawn and can all be one-hit consistently.
Occasionally, special events are held where Monster Book special cards can be purchased. In KMS, the only time that I know of when this happened was at their 5th anniversary. Maple Leaves (yes, the same ones we just used in that event) were able to be traded in for a card once a day. The only cards available were those within at least 10 levels of the character purchasing it. IE, my level 30 (at the time) Infighter was capable of buying the cards for level 40 King Slime, but not capable of buying level 55 Alishar's card. The lowest level one that could be bought, Mano, required about 500 Maple Leaves, and each boss needed 500 more than the last. The highest card that could be bought was Papulatus, and I believe it required somewhere in the area of 12,000 Maple Leaves. 12,000 a day, for 5 days... Maple Leaves were selling for approximately 500-1,000 mesos each, so that would be 60 million mesos for all the papulatus cards. You can see people take this really seriously.
You can click on a monster that you see in game and it will open the Monster Book to that monster's page. IE, if I click on a snail, it'll open the monster book to Snail.
The Monster Book is searchable, but I don't know much about how this works since I can't type in Korean.

So... why is this so good?

I mean, I understand that the drop list is useful, and the lore may be interesting to some people, and they're collectible and stuff, but other than that the buffs and crap are pretty circumstantial.

Maybe I'm just missing something.

Well, a game is circumstancial by itself... It's like "reach lv 200!" Only with "complete the book!" I could even pass without the buffs! The collecting thing caught my eye on the first sight.

The collecting part is probably the biggest motivation. There are a lot of people who love collecting, so monster book would be great for those people. Also, since MS gets very monotonous at high levels, you could just go and hunt for some cards for fun.

Ok, here's how it works.
All 5 cards give you the buff. But only if the monster is over level 30. That's why I said sometimes. XD
ONLY the last card gives you the Experience boost. The experience boost appears as a timer counting down right under your buffs, but it's separate. It also shows up in your quest log as "In progress" but it expires when the EXP boost runs out. I don't really get why they did it like that but that's how it is lol.

This has never happened in any version to date, sadly. The only way to obtain Boss cards, aside from hunting the boss, is by getting it from the Maple Leaf Exchange.

that's not to say our Nexon might not do this, but it has not been done before.

Also, Devil's Sunrise did us all a favor and performed a bit of cleanup to the card list. The attributes that the cards add are now marked in blue, and the annoying "n"s where line stops were supposed to be are gone.

I explained that earlier. The book will level approximately every 11 (regular) cards. since i have 41 regular cards, my book is level 3. If I find 3 more regular cards, I'll have 44, and my book would be level 4. The cover's color changes according to level, but as far as I can tell level has no effects on anything aside from that.

The total displayed in your character info is only UNIQUE monsters. If there are 8 monsters in Maple Island then it would say you had 8 cards, and never any more.
It displays 3 numbers:
Total number of unique cards (this is the sum of the next two)
Total number of unique regular cards
Total number of unique special cards

So, for example, if I have 5 king slime cards, and 5 Deu cards, but if you look at my special card total it only says 2, not 10.

Nothing at all happens if you pick up a 6th (or higher) monster card. That's why I said it would be a good idea to let someone else pick it up, so it didn't go to waste.

On the other hand there are certain monsters (like Slimes, for example) where pretty much everyone has all 5 of them. I think I've found 7 slime cards in KMS... No one wanted the other two so I ended up looting them anyway.

Yeah, we established that :p

I'm trying to work out how this leveling works now... There's 8 different covers, and since it starts at level 1 that means it can level 7 times. In the first incarnation of the Monster Book, there were 297 regular cards, which means if the leveling requirements were equal it'd take 37 cards just to get to level 2... Since mine was level 3 at 33, that's clearly not the case. If someone wants to try to figure out some sort of leveling equation based on that information feel free, but I don't really know where else to go from that.

Cards are not tradeable. They don't even go into inventory. When you pick them up they immediately go into your book.
But as described above, you may be able to buy boss monster cards through events.

Ahhh thanks.

Though with our Nexon it seems more likely that i'd be able to buy it with NX than an event... :f7:

So do any of the versions that have this also have fake bosses? Do the fake bosses drop the cards as well? That way I could collect them all for the PQs I can't do anymore. =D Watch fake bosses drop fake boss cards... -_-

From the sound of it they'd drop either nothing or their own cards, they have different stats than the original monster. Not to mention they're entirely different monsters in the data and all that :shine:

Fake bosses haven't dropped cards in any other version so far, but that can always change. Many people have suggested it as a solution.

At any rate, you sorta need them to farm the Goblin King monster cards =P

It would also be nice to know how many cards you get with the incredible amount of bait you have, so we all have a rough idea on how easy it is to farm boss cards xD

Heh, nothing to do with monster book, but here's the answer...

Yellow: This monster is very weak for your level. Around 10 levels below yours.
White: Not yellow or red :p Simply close to your level.
Red: Too powerful for your level. Around 10 levels above.

Not sure about the exact level difference that triggers it, but you get the idea.

It's actually 20 levels below for yellow.

This sounds pretty fun to do. I guess you kind of have to start from level 1 with the book to get the majority of the cards without getting them from events etc. At least some of the boss ones alishar etc. Should be fun though, something else to do when you're bored running around Henesys.

Just curious... Are there any new monster book cards? I mean, I once saw the snowman and rudolph card in special: Are there any new ones?

On a side note, I just wish they made some secret cards like "box" (from those boxes you have to poke everywhere) or SHOE (use your imagination).

IsaacGS

There haven't been any event monster cards since those 2 sadly. :/ I guess KMS players didn't like the idea. Doesn't mean that our Nexon can't make event monsters drop cards, though, which is something I'd really like to see. Turkey Commando cards, Puff Daddy cards, etc. Maybe re-release some old event mobs and have them drop cards all over again like the original Turkeys. That'd be cool, though unlikely.

If you're asking in general what cards were added since monster book was created, they've added Area Bosses 4, Elin Forest, Time Temple, Mu Lung Dojo's last boss, and Cynical Orange Mushroom. In CMS and JMS, Shanghai, Shaolin Temple, Mushroom shrine, Showa, and Kaede Castle monsters drop cards. I'm not sure if cards were added for Neo Tokyo but it seems likely.

If it is Mu Lung Dojo, that would be a no, if regular PQ bosses, yes. (Found a KS card in KPQ)

It's a free "trial" pet. You only get 5 hours with it, however the 5 hours only count down while it's out, so you can put it up while you're in town, on boats, etc. and get a lot more use out if it. Mine only has 6 minutes left, so I tend to take it out for a few seconds at a time when the amount of loot on the ground gets too big for me to pick up easily due to loot lag. It has Auto HP, Auto MP, item and meso loots, and it walks to things. KMS uses the Pet Skill system as opposed to equips so it's a bit different than what we're used to.

as for testing it there are a lot of things I could do but I don't really see a need for it.

It's only AWESOME, now, i mean in future, there'll be no need to check all 5sec on HS to find a monster after a complete book.
I've some question does the monster book give something when it's all complete by Master level (5)? like a special skill, a special item ?
Does anyone on those version of MS ever finished one yet ?

Well, it's literally impossible for anyone to have a complete book because KMS keeps adding cards for PQ bosses (Poison Golem for example, came out after the card-buying event) and then Pink Bean at the same time. So even if someone was weak enough to get Poison Golem's card, they couldn't get Pink Bean, and vice versa. Rather frustrating. I don't think there's any reward for finishing it though, aside from a wealth of information right there. :p

Amai

Well in that case it's impossible if they add monster each patch but you can still have all cards of the current patch that's my question.
I know that Pink Bean (or Been ?) is bugged and it needs to be fixed but PB isn't that far impossible, i mean for people on KMS, that i already saw some movies showing their skills at defeating all statue.
And i add that it'll be amasing to someone to get level 5 (master) on PB or HT x).

Sorry for Necro Posting here (if i am at all) but i just wanted to mention - as it wasn't explained in your guide thing - is that every time you get a new card, the picture for the monster will change. It will include moving, usually an attack, it getting hit, and it dying all in one animation.

Also, in regards to this:

There's a pretty cool effect that appears over your head each time you loot a card. Everyone nearby will know when you get one :p

Other people cannot see the effect on your head. I just saw someone pick up a card a second ago and I saw no effect.

Double-click character, Monster Book tab.

http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x190/loose24/status.gif

Looks like that... not really a cover, more like a way to show off a card you got. Also, the Monster Book opens to the Monster you have selected as your cover.

If you click on someone, and look at their character info, it now has Monster Book next to their Taming Mob and pet data. Check that tab, and it'll tell you what level their book is and what the cover monster is. You can't actually *view* it, but it will tell you what it is.

I'm compiling a Monster Book guide for GameFAQs, and I want to use, at the very least, the card effect list (since it'll take forever to manually get them all).

That's straight from the game data, so it's not like it's really mine. though, if I were making this post again right now, I'd probably go get the MapleSEA monster book data because it's a lot more complete than GMS's at the moment. That and, you know, this list doesn't have some of the newer monsters in GMS on it.

You can set it to open to a specific card if you want. People tend to do this with the cards of their favorite monsters and/or really rare cards that they're proud of obtaining. You can also undo the setting and return the default page to its opening page.

Hmm how do you set this o_O?
