On Friday in San Francisco, the California nonprofit that oversees Internet addresses gave the green light to the virtual red-light district. The vote comes after several years of clashes and deliberations by the Internet Corp. for Assigned Names and Numbers.
Adult-entertainment sites will still populate the .com space and every other corner of the Internet. But now, many pornographic sites can also join a specialized domain that instantly telegraphs its content with the infamous suffix. ICM Registry, a Florida-based company that will run .xxx, said the domain's Web sites will be the Internet's most trusted place for adult entertainment: ICM will monitor the sites to ensure that they prohibit spam, viruses and any other illegal behavior. And it says it will use some of the registration fees for an affiliated foundation to promote free speech and combat child pornography.
But the dirty domain has a slew of critics. The Obama administration and some foreign nations say the domain's offensive material will only encourage oppressive regimes to block .xxx entirely.

Waitwhat?

The Obama administration and some foreign nations say the domain's offensive material will only encourage oppressive regimes to block .xxx entirely.

And this is a problem? What vested interest does Obama have in making sure the oppressed have access to porn?

I'm not sure how many porn purveyors would actually move into this ghetto, though. It'd be way too easy for "parental controls" and other censors to block the entire domain, so they lose a large part of their audience. On the other hand, they might gain a few visitors who used to avoid porn sites for fear of viruses and other malware (But xxx better deliver on that ... just one runaway virus will be enough to destroy their credibility and business).

All in all, I say let them try. It's a free internet.

I don't see how this works, to be honest.
Do you register a .com domain and then the government changes that to a .xxx domain? What if you don't register for a .xxx domain? Or do you buy a .xxx domain yourself, which frankly loses its credibility entirely.

I think you have to pay for the xxx domain yourself and not just anyone can. I'm guessing you will need to meet some kind of standard to get one.

ICM Registry, a Florida-based company that will run .xxx [...] will monitor the sites to ensure that they prohibit spam, viruses and any other illegal behavior

The way I understand this, you can't register a .xxx address without going through this ICM Registry.

No one is forcing a porn site to be named .xxx. There will still be .com or .co.ru or w/e. But those that want the "trustworthy" tag of being an official .xxx, they will pay ICM to vet them by giving them such a name.

As I said above, it remains to be seen just how many of them will opt in.

What's the fun when most sites that migrate to .xxx will not be free? (and will not be /d/ material)

Why?

Granted they will have to pay some kind of fee to ICM, but it's not like they have no operating costs right now. If they want to be free and use advertising to fund themselves, they can continue to do so.

I've no idea what /d/ material is, but from the OP it seems the only thing self-censored would be child pornography.
