DragonBall Kai Ending in Japan: First Solid Confirmation?
VegettoEX @ 9:12 am EST -- I feel like I have to preface this news by stating that Daizenshuu EX has no particularly strong opinions any which way on what the future may be for DragonBall Kai. It is not an adaptation we particularly loved, but it was quasi-new, brought a fresh group of fans in, gave us more material to talk about, etc.

That all being said, we have been closely following its performance, especially in Japan. From the exponential drop in sales figures, merchandise branding, Toriko taking its time slot next month, and everything in between, it has been a fascinating ride — a ride that is likely over. All we have had to go on up until now has been speculation and a few educated guesses, but now it seems as if confirmation is getting out there that DragonBall Kai is over.

Our Japanese buddy kei17 posted up a scan from the magazine TV Pia on our forum that contained a short interview with Takeshi Kusao, the voice actor for Trunks:

http://www.daizex.com/misc_stuff/tv_pia_kai_over.jpg

In addition to some minor tidbits about how he went about doing the synchronized voices with Masako Nozawa for Gotenks in the past and how much he learned from her (such as ad-libbing breathing that was not in the script), the article provided two very significant items:

(1) Takeshi Kusao notes that he hopes, if there is an opportunity, that they can also remake the Majin Buu story arc

(2) The article specifically notes that there are only four episodes of DragonBall Kai left

There you have it, folks — four episodes puts us right in the ball park to be ending with Episode 98 (the end of the Jinzôningen & Cell arc) on 27 March 2011. This is the first we are seeing with someone involved with the series' production actively stating that it is coming to a close, and I expect that while we may see more, information will likely be limited and vague. Will they return to do the Majin Buu arc at some point later down the road? What does this mean for the international licensees? Any fallout from this turn of events is likely only just beginning.

I really wanted to see the Buu Saga redone.

I was loving rewatching all the Dragon Ball Z episodes, but they cut out like more than half the story, and cut out a lot of action because it's bloody.

They should just reshow the original DBZ.

And Buu is stupid I want to see Cell.

Isn't The manga finished with cell originally? After all the Bu saga and beyond, as good and epic as i may have been, it was only filler for the tv. Of course most people grew up watching the anime instead of reading the manga so meh.

I believe Akira Toriyama originally planned for the series to end with Cell, but since sales were so good, his publishers wanted him to continue, and the wrote the Buu Saga.

I somewhat blame their time slot, which made for lack of graphic violence. I'm sad for them to called what is basically the leanest Dragon Ball series that one can make.

And DB is mainly about epic fights, yet they lack graphic violence, that's what make it unpopular.

You guys should blame Censorship, which could be traced back to the TV censorship build, which could be traced back to the complaints made by various "Parents Association" which could be traced back to mothers that "worries" about the effect of violence that might happen on their children.

Conclusion: Blame your mom.

Rumors say he was going to end with Frieza, but continued, and then planned to end with Cell, but continued again.

So in short, blame the fans for filler.

Wait a second, I thought this was because the creator was MIA.

Wait a second, I thought this was because the creator was MIA.This news was released before the earthquake took place in Japan.

Though it's kind of ironic that a few days later disaster struck Japan, causing a tsunami wave that went straight to the islands that used to be ruled by King Kamehameha... Hawaii...

I liked the buu sanga to be honest. I didn't like gohan, and they finally put the fight between goku and vegeta.
