View Full Version : The thread for figure-collectors
Sorry, couldn't think of a better name. I didn't want to put something like "FIGURE COLLECTOR CENTRAL". Thanks.
I just recently started to collect some figures, and I'm more-so aiming for the characters that I actually like in animu&mango, instead of just collecting everything that I see. So far I have:

Sup. Not letting this thread die. May just be me and you talking though, don't think there are many figure collectors here on SP.
My most recent purchases made yesterday was Revoltech's Lazengann (http://www.amiami.jp/shop/?set=english&vgForm=ProductInfo&sku=TOY-RBT-0298&template=default/product/e_display.html) and this (http://myfigurecollection.net/figure/14375_furude_rika) cute 'lil Rika figure.
Revoltech has really nice figures for decent prices. I have their Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann and Yotsuba figures. I also have a Danbo (from Yotsuba) figure pre-ordered that's supposed to make its way to me sometime in January.
I don't have an account on myfigurecollection, mostly because I'm too lazy to keep track of my figures. I wrote up a review yesterday on Good Smile's Megurine Luka Nendoroid, but it was kinda my first figure review so it was less reviewing and more me taking cute pictures.

Currently, there's a BRS Nendo I'm receiving very .. shortly. A friend's holding it for me, she already has it. I've also preordered a Serizawa Fumino (HNNNNNNNG TSUNDERE) PVC figure from AmiAmi, and I'll be getting that near mid or end of November. DELICIOUS
PS: Lazengann, hmm? Nice tastes, bro. I actually considered getting that as well, I have very little to no experience with Revoltech stuff though. :| I'm loving Wave and Griffon's stuff though, man, so much details.

Revoltech is very nice, especially with mech figures. They always come with so many alternate parts, you can swap the parts up, they're quite easy to pose around. I have a few Revoltech figures, 2 of them are shown in my above images. Krauser and Yotsuba are Revoltech, and in one image (you can't see it well) I swapped one of Yotsuba's arms for Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann's arm, since Revoltech parts can fit on each other.
I don't want to take Yotsuba out of her current Guitarist pose from my bookshelf, but I would take pictures of her with swapped parts to show you what I mean. The guitar she has on is Krauser's though.
They're reasonably priced, and still nice. I like them better than Figmas, when it comes to figures you can pose. The joints are also less noticeable, which is good because I kinda don't like the way joints look on figures.

I never knew that Revoltech parts are swappable like that. Huh. Interesting. Nendos are too, but they're too expensive for me. I got that one BRS Nendo just in time for around 1,100 JPY (I think) before AmiAmi took it down. :| Whew. Might have to get myself some TTGL Revoltech figures then. FEELS GOOD, MAN. Great to know.

I am mostly posting now because I feel guilty about forgetting to post before, and also because I am procrastinating, so I will not make this long and will post pics later while using this post to inspire some discussion. (It is midnight, so my grammar may be breaking.)
What do you guys use to buy your stuff? I usually use AmiAmi (unless HLJ or HS is having a deal on shipping).
Also, if you're looking for rare stuff (some of the GL Revoltechs are hard to find, I believe), Mandarake's your best bet (though I've never ordered from them personally, I've heard nothing but good things about them, even if their website is a little wonky). (http://ekizo.mandarake.co.jp/shop/en/) I've been searching for a TTGL Revoltech myself for a while though, and I haven't seen them anywhere... why they chose to rerelease some of the other GL ones and not TTGL, I do not know. :f3:

Forgot to mention what I think about Griffon. This image sums up my thoughts nicely:
http://img838.imageshack.us/img838/3509/1279330306920.jpg
Really, he does nice sculptures and all, but I hate how he puts the same face on his figures. He's been getting better with it lately, but when you look at his older figures, it's really apparent. It's nothing too major, just a minor annoyance I have. If I'm dishing out that much money for figures, I'd like it their faces didn't seem like they were using the same model.

AmiAmi is fine. Cheap prices, items are packaged in a nice way that don't ruin the boxes if you use SAL as your shipping method, and has some nice deals every now and then. Sometimes I user 1999.co.jp or HLJ when AmiAmi doesn't have something.
I've ordered from:
-eBay (only for stuff like wall scrolls, posters, Dakimakuras, etc)
-AmiAmi [primary source of figures]
-Otacute
-figure.fm (serious!)
I buy a lot from figure.fm too, there's some sellers out there that sells stuff for pretty cheap and at decent prices. Just gotta be careful, so yeah. I've bought my Rozalin figure for around 45 USD from figure.fm , she was literally in mint-condition, with box and everything. I check figure.fm daily too, for classified sales, new reviews or news about figurines, etcetcetc. When I'm on AmiAmi, I hit the "sales" section of Bishoujos to see if there's anything cheap. I don't buy from Otacute a lot nowadays, have been hearing bad things about 'em. eBay, I usually go to buy dakimakura covers, and stuff.
I frequently browse HLJ, 1999.co.jp, e2046 (but their stuff is uber expensive, because they're all GKs), and various sites too, but I haven't bought from them. Heard about Mandarake or whatever, but haven't went on there much. Only tried once. The layout is strange.

Oh c'mon, you can't be dissin' Griffon.

Sure the eyes might resemble eachother (and so does the majority of all anime (http://img340.imageshack.us/img340/6808/nishimataaoimonoface.gif)) but characters really stand out in their costumes and outfits. Particularly with Griffon, the bright colors and poses. And despite the motion in the poses, no fan service or visible pantsu.

Yes, nice sculptor, and does make rather nice poses, but the faces bother me at times. Some of the faces seem rather off on the character simply because he pretty much used a previously made face as a base. Also, as a figure collector, I do notice differences in faces from my more expensive figures. You can argue the whole "anime face swap" thing, but that's not exactly what I'm talking about here. Regardless, the faces shouldn't be just pasted on with minor tweaks. The Suika you posted is one of the newer figures, and as I've said, he's been getting better as of late with actually making the faces different from each other.
Cirno and Suika have faces that stand out from the other figures, faces that are unique and belong to them (moreso from Cirno). That's what I'm looking for. I don't want a clothing and hair swap, I want figures that look unique on their own.

The shipping thing makes sense if you look at AmiAmi's shipping price chart.
(http://www.amiami.jp/shop/?vgform=SimpleForm&template=e_faq.html#Rates) SAL starts at 2kg. for 3850. Since EMS is 3520, it must be ~1.7kg. So SAL is actually cheaper than it should be, for some reason.
Not at home, so I can't post pics, but here's my MFC (http://myfigurecollection.net/collections.php?user=BTA&category=0&display=mozaic&root=-1&status=2&sort=category&order=asc&pp=130). I did set up categories for them, so they're organized if you check that.

Totally did not see that. I was talking about these then:
http://myfigurecollection.net/figure/42323_izayoi_sakuya
http://myfigurecollection.net/figure/31538_izayoi_sakuya
Oh man I looked at the group of Sakuya figurines in one of those pictures and I really want most of them :<
Also I like how these have the bootleg picture versions as well, because I totally bought these when I was in China:
http://myfigurecollection.net/figure/12948_kirisame_marisa
http://myfigurecollection.net/figure/6588_black_rock_shooter
I honestly have to say, for bootleg versions, the Chinese versions still look pretty damn good, I was hunting this store for like an hour before I finally found the BRS one. They just started the sword versions and were running out of the cannon ones, I think I bought the last one in the stores. The Marisa one is also really really good, despite being red, but I sort of ignored that.
Bootlegs are okay as long as you don't intend on being all srsbsns and showing-off your figures, I guess. I mean, if it's valuable and of worth in your own eyes, I guess that's what counts. Honestly, I'd probably scream my head off if any of my figures are bootlegs. I check my stuff carefully before buying, and I get really annoyed when it comes to dust too. Probably getting one of those IKEA display-cases.. one day, with slightly dimmed UV lights on top so that my figurines will be protected from dust. What I can't protect is de-coloration. =_=

I started just barely 3-4 months ago, but I think Spidey and BTA's done it for a lot longer than I have. I usually buy non-posable figurines though, because I hate seeing joints. :/ If I do buy one, it'd be from Revoltech. Hmm.
Also, Mirai-chan will have her own figma figurine very soon. Pre-orders starts at or near the end of this month, HNNNNNNNNNNNNNG-

I've been buying stuff for about a year now. I mainly stick to Nendoroids/Figmas/Revoltechs, since I can't afford much else. If I end up getting a job next year I'll probably get a non-poseable every-so-often, but I think I like poseables better.

Yeah I just keep them all in my bookshelf. I mean who do I really have/want to show it off to anyways? I do have real figurines I buy from the only big con around me, but that's about it. It's seriously too expensive if I really want to be picky about it. And yeah, dust and decoloration are bad, I'm pretty sure some of the bootleg stuff worsens quicker than the originals, but most of the stuff seem to be in pretty good condition overall.

I hate to break this to you, but there's no way you're finding anything by Christmas. These things take a while to be made/released, and I haven't even seen anything of that character announced yet (the show hasn't even been airing for 2 months, and IIRC it's not adapted from anything). There is a smallish poseable figure of his mech, Tauburn, but even that won't be out till March.

EDIT: Oh, didn't see that "this one" had a link. Then again, your alternative isn't much cheaper, I believe.
Could always look into GKs [Garage Kits], some are pre-painted, so it's easy to put 'em together. Some might be pre-assembled too. But they tend to be a bit hefty in price, we're talking about x2 or even x3 that of regular figures. Standard GKs are around 100USD+. Garage Kits are basically unlicense, unofficial.. figures that peoples makes at home (lolintheirgarage), pretty much.

Anime's Star Driver; the character's name is Takuto.
I'm not sure if that's exactly the best description for a GK though, since IIRC if you want your stuff shown at places like WonFes, it has to be licensed.

If he's doing that, it's an entirely different story. Even to a lot of the communities out there that collects figurines, I don't recall of any that would look down upon another for collecting a GK. But yeah, maybe that wasn't the best definition for a GK.. Hmmm.

Was just being unnecessarily nitpicky about this part, is all. Garage Kits aren't necessarily unlicensed/unofficial, though you are right in that some get released as PVC figures later on.
Updating this to say that I now own a BRS Nendoroid. Finally received it today from my friend, because she's the one getting the shipments in, etc. Anyways, pretty happy with my purchase. Was a real bargain from AmiAmi before they took it off their site. :/ Forgot how much I paid for it, but without s&h was definitely LESS than 15 USD. Came with a 50 minute DVD thing too, might check that out eventually, but feeling extremely lazy. The Nendoroid came with too many exchangeable parts, which in a way.. kinda makes me rage. Because it's going to be annoying trying to keep track of my parts. I doubt I'll buy another Nendo, though I do like the quality of my 1st Nendo purchase from GSC.
Also probably going to make a website to keep track of my own figurines, as well as giving small reviews. Hopefully won't become a cluster-f`uck.

You realize how many BRS PVC figures that exists.. right? Also:
-Tried eBay, with my zip code, the cheapest one I found was about 110+33 USD (total). 33 being S&H charges.
-AmiAmi was sold-out, at around 7,450 JPY. That's around 80-85 USD, I think.
-Amazon.com = no-go. Couldn't find any. (originally typed .jp by accident, but not like you'd be able to do business on there anyways)
I'll try to regularly check figure.fm to see if people are selling any in the Classifieds section, but even then, the chances are that they're either overpriced or they're used.

lol, have fun with that. It's out of stock everywhere, bro. Who knows if it'll ever restock. You have to look on auction sites, pretty much. when you find it, it'll be like 2 times the original price, or a bootleg.

FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK
Wanted to ask, which method of shipping do you guys use when ordering from Japanese sites?
-EMS
-Registered SAL
-Unregistered SAL
I've been using nothing else but unregistered SAL, and all of my packages have been fine so far. I might do an EMS for my upcoming figure that's worth about 80 USD though. :| Don't feel like having it being reported as "lost" and then losing the money I made on my purchase, etc

bad news just keeps getting piled on top of bad news.
Good news is, now you'll stay away from that particular BRS (I would hope so!). You could always go for a figma, or a Nendoroid. Those are a lot cheaper. If you're going for PVCs, the details are going to be massive, that and it's usually 1/6 - 1/8, so it'll be expensive anyways. :/ If you need any further assistance, lemme know. But if you're still going for this particular figure, it's not gonna go well.

There was a quality issue with it anyway; they, uh, somehow forgot to put the star on her jacket...
Also, BRS: I have the Figma and Nendo, as well as Dead Master's Figma... but only the BRS Nendo is out right now. I've been waiting to fix the di:stage I broke so I can make a little battle scene before I put BRS and DM up, but I haven't gotten around to buying the plastic glue I need... >.>

...so no TTGL, still. I will get you someday! (But how will I afford you? Or buy you, even, since the only reason I caught the Eva/Yotsuba re-release was Tomopop reporting on it...) :f4:

Question aimed at Khoi and Spidey, since you fellows have a good idea of a few characters, games, or series I'm interested in and what to look out for when I'm looking for a figure: recommend me a figure about $50 USD or under, preferably from a US-based store. I'm looking for something with a lot of personality (funny is a plus) and nothing too "kawaii". Posable or non-posable doesn't matter.
Not really bad news, but something you guys also might want to know. Shipments sent from an unmarked or anonymous package from Japan to the US and its territories that are larger than 453 grams (which is about 1 pound) will be halted starting November 17. Fortunately enough, all major sellers for merchandise are in contract with Japan Post according to response from AmiAmi to an email inquiry about this. So to speak, sites like AmiAmi aren't affected, which is fortunate for us. Won't affect us for the most part at all, but still, something you should know.

Omega/Omnimon, DO WANT. Wargreymon, eh. I love Wargreymon to death, but if I really had to pick, it'd be Omegamon for sure. The model kit is only around 35 USD (or less) on AmiAmi for Omegamon, thinking of getting it some time in the future, but I think it was sold out atm anyways. /sadface

The three Gurren Laganns have some pretty good looking poses, except I can't see the full-Drillized Gurren Lagann very well in Amazon's preview or its poses; but I'm sure it's pretty cool too. Likely gonna go with the first one. Also going to grab Yotsuba as well.
Also adding Nendoroid Sebastian Michaelis to my to-buy list, because I just remembered about it recently; and it has some pretty awesome faces. Discovered this one a while ago from an image Khoi showed me, but I forgot about it.
As far as pre-orders go, I'm really interested in HMO Miku, because the accessories look great. The drumset looks like it'd be awesome to work with (and I also need a drummer for my band of figs, haha). Also, I definitely don't want to miss out on re-release of Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann.
Thanks, sis. Also, thanks for helping also, Khoi.

In the very small amount of time I've spent in /toy/, I've actually heard that the Robot Damashiis for 01 and 02 are somewhat better than the Revoltechs, though they cost a bit more.
As far as Vesperia... There's a number of figures out/coming out, but I'm not sure how interested you'll be (as I don't know what you think of which characters): here (http://www.amiami.jp/shop?set=english&vgform=SearchProducts&sort_1_name=UpdateDate&sort_1_direction=DESC&results_per_page=40&max_results=0&next=Next&previous=Previous&template=default/product/e_search_results.html&no_results_template=default/product/no_results.html&vgvar_1_name=e_keyword&vgvar_1_value=Vesperia&vgvar_1_operator=LIKE).
EDIT: Actually, if you want 01, there's a new Revoltech of it coming out in January. (http://www.amiami.jp/shop/?set=english&vgForm=ProductInfo&sku=TOY-RBT-1337&template=default/product/e_display.html)
Tales figures are hard to come by, but I believe that there are some TotA & ToV figures. There's an upcoming Flynn (I think this was his name from ToV) figure, it's PVC too iirc. Forgot about price, but the price was pretty high.

Noticed that below some of his PVCs, there's something underneath it to push it up a lot higher. It's like a stand. Wondering what they are, and where he got it at. That's a good idea for show-casing off your figures. I'm also going to be buying one of those IKEA cases very shortly. I just searched for the closest IKEA, and the address was listed as "pittsburgh", so I always assumed it was 45 mins away (because that's how far Pittsburgh is). But it was actually in a Shopping Center or something near my current university. Only 5-10 minutes further away. So I'll be buying a case really soon, hopefully before Christmas.
Also thinking about buying it on Black Friday. >_> Even though I work 9PM [Thursday] - 9AM [Friday], I'll probably be out with some friends for some beer early morning, then I might head off to IKEA afterwards.

Wait, that one's your's? Very nice. Ya know, she does look like she's modeled after Rei. Really. I know she's from Haruhi though ^
Yeah, that's mine, on my desk. I plan on keeping her there, but like most Nendoroids she's kinda wobbly (her stand thing is... odd- the thing around her legs has to be titled sideways a little to have her stand up like that), and this desk is both not amazingly sturdy and in a room where people are likely to bang into it, so... yeah, might move her to my room sooner rather than later.

My Black Rock Shooter figma always wobbles on my computer table as I type, but I just get used to it. As long as she doesn't fall off balance, I'm fine with her being there.

It's this desk more than her- it's shaky by design, and she's fallen over a bit too much to my liking in the past two days alone. I've decided to just put her in my room.
Though, when HMO Miku comes out, I'm hoping her stand will allow her to stay on the desk without too much trouble... we'll see, I guess.

So I just bought my first model kit (http://www.amiami.jp/shop/?set=english&vgForm=ProductInfo&sku=TOY-GDM-1267&template=default/product/e_display.html) (got it from HLJ though, due to their shipping sale making it a little cheaper). Here's hoping I don't screw it up, though as I don't have any ties to what its from I won't be trying to paint it or anything, so it should be easy. (As to why I bought it... Did you purposely put Remi in front of "Chibi Vampire" or was it just an ironic coincidence?
Got a special Aya figure in the mail from a friend overseas. I'll have to take a picture soon, she's pretty hardcore expensive, around 150 USD.

Coincidence. I have Chibi vampire at the top of my bookshelf (well, the part where the books actually start and the figures end is the 3rd row, but you get the point) and use that shelf for easy picture taking because it's at almost eye level with me. The Lazengann images I took a week or two ago use the same shelf. I didn't realize until I uploaded them to my computer.
Edit: Oh, I didn't notice. Apparently for Lazengann I used the shelf below, but around the same area, since Hayate is aligned right below Karin (I hate using the name Tokyopop gave it).

Right, so I already went through the trouble of digging the image up.
http://img94.imageshack.us/img94/193/img6521u.jpg
The figure is very nice, and the detailing is certainly lovely, especially for the price.
http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_u6CZNfw0OsA/TP3vWbH48KI/AAAAAAAAAMA/veM6u1PbrKQ/s1600/IMG_6524.jpg
http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_u6CZNfw0OsA/TP3vW150lXI/AAAAAAAAAME/HPIsjv4IFNY/s1600/IMG_6545.jpg
So I get this, and take it out the box. Oh boy, the accessories look nice, the figure looks nice, the paint job doesn't look cheap, everything is fine. But...how the hell do I balance this thing? This is by far one of the most unbalanced figures I've ever purchased. Maybe I'm just bad at balancing, but the long stick part of the base that comes with Revoltech's as to use his tail as the base to hold the figure up. I found that to be a rather awkward place to hold the figure up. There's also this strange little small piece of the stand that didn't come with any of my other Revoltech figures.
http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_u6CZNfw0OsA/TP3wI2vmGuI/AAAAAAAAAMI/ddFW7XRsOAM/s1600/IMG_6542.jpg
It's supposed to go into the spot where the long stick part of the base goes, but if I'm having problems balancing this figure normally, I can't imagine this little piece will do any better with that. Here's a professional image of the figure using this piece.
http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_YF1tNfQVN8w/TJNmZq1C5LI/AAAAAAABT_4/IJA0-CPumDE/s1600/10.jpg
I've no idea how the hell you'd get to do this. It's simply too much weight being distributed to one part of the base, and there's hardly anything to weigh down the other end, or keep it sturdy. Seriously, maybe I'm overlooking something. That's a really big turnoff, because it limits the poses I can do with my figure. Or, if I do find the right pose, I'd have to take forever to balance it. Once it's balanced, it's easy to topple over because of the weight, and once it's toppled I'd have to go through balancing it all over again. It's my one gripe with this figure so far, and it's the largest one. I notice bad paint jobs, or unsmooth edges on figures, but it doesn't bother me if I can at least make them look nice. This is hard to do that with, because of how unbalanced it is. So, in the next shots, you'll see me using a volume of Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei to weigh the base down enough so the figure can actually make some poses.
http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_u6CZNfw0OsA/TP3xkUQgp1I/AAAAAAAAAMM/1vLxDECXpXE/s1600/IMG_6527.jpg
http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_u6CZNfw0OsA/TP3x0GP9-VI/AAAAAAAAAMQ/An9qEoZlx4Y/s1600/IMG_6531.jpg
Oh, right! One thing I like about Revoltech figures! You can mix and match parts, much like how you can swap Nendoroid faces! I'm using Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann's drill for Lazengann's tail, just for the hell of it. And here's a Frankenstein figure I made.
http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_u6CZNfw0OsA/TP3yQL3DEjI/AAAAAAAAAMY/zTyN8KFCpZc/s1600/IMG_6532.jpg
http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_u6CZNfw0OsA/TP3yP8pUoKI/AAAAAAAAAMU/RdEHg3GzxPk/s1600/IMG_6533.jpg
Now, let me make a comment about the accessories. They're nice, but some are a bit of an annoyance. Obviously, this also comes with lots of different hands for extra poses. The drills that it comes with have to be placed between the revolver join and the joint socket. It keeps them in place nicely, but prevents the joint from fully fitting into the socket, meaning it'll be a bit loose and difficult to pose around. They still look pretty cool though.
http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_u6CZNfw0OsA/TP3ypbtf6MI/AAAAAAAAAMc/D_GLww1FrQk/s1600/IMG_6535.jpg
It also comes with this jetpack thing that Gurren Lagann uses in the anime. The wings aren't included. I assume they came with another Gurren Lagann figure. In any case, I don't have the Gurren Lagann figure this is used for, so I guess I can just use it to make my Metagross look like a tank or something.
http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_u6CZNfw0OsA/TP3zhuv_59I/AAAAAAAAAMg/7CDMgicYR6A/s1600/IMG_6539.jpg
http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_u6CZNfw0OsA/TP3z6iKHoJI/AAAAAAAAAMk/XW_ggFtc7n0/s1600/IMG_6543.jpg
http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_u6CZNfw0OsA/TP3z60S8JaI/AAAAAAAAAMo/_8JHHrtnSCU/s1600/IMG_6538.jpg
Here's a size comparison of it next to Tengen Toppa. The size is reasonable, to tell you the truth. I would like it a bit larger (maybe they could fit the socket that you connect to the base in a more convenient spot with more space), but it's fine like this. I'm still messing around with the figure to see if I can get a nice pose with it. I don't regret the purchase, it's a really nice figure. I just wish it was easier for me to pose around. Most of my other Revoltechs have no problem being put into multiple different poses and staying balanced.
http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_u6CZNfw0OsA/TP30AQB2GrI/AAAAAAAAAMs/9Zfy4BeZMAc/s1600/IMG_6544.jpg
Sorry for some rather bad quality images. I don't usually photograph. In fact, I don't recall really picking up a camera many times before, because I've had no need to photograph anything.
Overall, it was a nice buy. The figure itself isn't really what's flawed, it's the stand. Of course, it's just using the standard Revoltech stand of the little black V, but they really should have come up with something more suitable for this. It's really hard to balance. My other figures usually have the main socket somewhere on their lower torso, which is a strong spot to hold the figure up. Putting the base on the tail makes it really unbalanced. I supposed I'd be able to balance this better if I removed the tail and used the empty socket to hold the figure instead, but I really shouldn't have to do something like that.
I later found a post by someone that had similar problems, and they used a Figma stand instead. I used one, and it fits perfectly into the Revoltech slot. So I guess I'll use a Figma stand for this instead and toss the normal stand into my closet or something.

Oh, forgot to mention that I was aware of the small Toe Hoes being bootleg. I got them at a super discount price that didn't even bother me. I don't usually buy bootlegs because they tend to look really bad and aren't worth it, hence Chen's bad paint job. Some of them are decent quality though, those are the ones I kept in my room while stuffing the others away. Remilia is authentic though.
Hey, as long as it works for you. I have a bootleg ToeHoe plushie, but that's about it. No bootleg figures. It's not a problem at all. Also, nice review!

Usually. I know for AmiAmi, it's very possible. Depends on the supply and how many customers demands it. Ex:
This (http://www.amiami.jp/shop/?set=english&vgForm=ProductInfo&sku=FIG-MOE-2165&template=default/product/e_display.html)
Older pre-order figure, but still.
The only Ore no Imouto figure I recently pre-ordered was a Beach Queen ver. Kirino (http://www.amiami.jp/shop/?set=english&vgForm=ProductInfo&sku=FIG-MOE-2331&template=default/product/e_display.html)*, but I won't be getting that til March. Not interested in Nendoroids anymore.. I got a BRS Nendo, and that's really all I wanted. I actually don't like the interchangeable parts, because it's annoying for me to keep track of it.
* = Dat face! HNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNG-
Slightly unrelated, I packed up most of my figurines and put them back in their original boxes. I really would hate to see dust on them, and it bothers me a lot. I actually dust them weekly, and even then, it annoys me to see dust on them here and there. I just dusted them as much as I could, and put them back in the boxes. I only have my BRS Nendo, Race Queen Rei Ayanami, and a special edition / figure of Aya [Touhou] out on my desk. The rest, I packed up. Recently got a Fumino Serizawa figurine that I purchased too, she was around 80 USD or so, forgot. Still haven't opened her. <3 And I don't intend to.

Most figures are sold in limited amounts and restock god knows when (if ever).
You get used to it when you collect figures. Have to keep up with the times or else you may miss your chance and never get it again unless you want to pay double the retail price on an auction site.

Seconding this. SO MUCH.
Yeah, sometimes, you only get one chance, it's all a matter of luck, and a lot of demand. Even of auction sites, sometimes, the prices can be ridiculous for older figurines that are no longer in production. I usually go the sales section on AmiAmi and check for what I want, even then, I don't always buy everything I see on there. Sometimes, I check multiple times a day, even if I think they might not update. Like that one time when I managed to get a Nendo BRS for around 1.2k JPY (cheap), considering that the full price was well over 2,000 JPY, last I checked.

Hasn't GSC been doing made-to-order runs for Figmas and Nendos, though? I mean, that was true of BRS at least.

Made-to-order? As in, you place an order on their site and they'll have one in stock for you? That'd be a nice idea, but I don't think they do that. Otherwise we wouldn't be seeing figure prices skyrocket after they get sold out everywhere. They've yet to re-release their Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei Nendoroid, and I'd love to get my hands on one.

Double posting, but...
Nendoroid Petit Kagami's stand went in fine after I heated it.
Putting in Nendoroid Petit Tsukasa's stand took around 20 minutes.
Figma Luka's stand then BROKE BEFORE I COULD EVEN TRY TO PUT IT IN LUKA, though thankfully in a way glue will fix.
Figma BRS's gun hand DOES NOT WANT TO ATTACH TO HER ARM, so trying again tomorrow.
On to AngelBeats! NP sets... Yusa went first, and... her stand broke. In a way I CAN'T FIX. Thankfully, Shiina comes with an extra stand due to her alternate legs, but I first have to remove the broken part from Yusa's base. While trying to do, I ragequit.

This is probably one of my favorite otaku rooms I've seen. It's got a lot of style and class- the wallpaper and the framed Umineko portraits along with other images look gorgeous and they also get along with the choice of furniture (the clock looks really nice over there). It has some generally strong unity and doesn't seem like a whacky collection of assorted merchandising. My props to this guy. I bought the original from a proxy for around $60-70, shipping included. This one will probably be around the same price as the original, but I'll be using a cheaper proxy (though with conversion rates as they are, it'll probably even out...).

I wasn't convinced at first when I first heard about the new Snow Miku, as all I heard was that it all this version was was just a scarf added to it. But when I looked at this figure and the new features, I was pretty convinced it was worth buying as someone who already has the original.
New faces and the Snowman accesory are really cute, I found the faces to be a lot nicer and somewhat more refreshing than the ones of the original Snow Miku. I also like the ear muffs, mittens, scarf, and the new boots; those were a pretty welcome addition to make it feel different enough to me.
The paint job and "colors" on this one seem a little more of darker blue than the original. It appears to me that the inside and around the end of her hair, it's now a darker blue. Also, the new boots are shiny; and the dress appears to be shinier. The figure also seems a little sleeker, but it may be exaggerated in the photos.
I found this one to be ironically also more "warmer looking" and inviting than the original, in the end. Bottomline is that this one is worth buying, especially with the neat ice tray to try out. Besides that, it's an exclusive. There's no way in hell I'd pass up on this!
Hopefully, it's about the same price of 4000円 when they'll be selling it online too on GoodSmile's website, but I've never ordered an exlcusive or from their website, for that matter. How much pricier would it get, aside from shipping?

I'm going for Tokyo Hunter (http://tokyohunter.blogspot.com/2011/01/gsc-nendoroid-snow-miku-snow-playtime.html). It's where I got the original from... Usually his prices are a little bit higher, but I think they're the same as Yokatta's this time (and Yokatta charges an additional fee too, so it may be cheaper...)
Still getting Mato from Yokatta, though. I'll just use SAL for her...
Debating on whether I should buy Snow Miku or not now, didn't expect her to be THAT expensive. I was hoping she'd be slightly more expensive than typical Nendos, but this is just .. wow. :/

Cheap? Guarenteed bootleg.
Why is the face of your Marisa so shiny though? Was that because of the flash, or because it's not a PVC? I don't think any of my figures shines like that, but.. I forgot when was the last time I even used flash to take pics of my figs. Also, when I said cheap, I meant 40-60 range. I don't even know if that's the correct price for it nowadays. :/

Not PVC. Mine is fake, from Ebay. It was priced at normal and sad it was authentic though, so I filed a complaint and ended up just getting my money back and keeping the figure for free.
One of my few bootlegs, but unintentional.
Edit: By the way, the one I purchased had a black outfit in the product description, which made the process of reporting ebay scam a lot easier. Dunno how lucky I would have been if I got a bootleg that was the same color as the original.

Ohhh, I see. Interesting. Glad ebay gave you back your money though, was there a major hassle about it? As in, did eBay or the seller give you a hard time? How long did this process take until you had received a refund?

Seller canceled their account shortly after the purchase. Everything was pointing to the seller being shady, and they only made it worse for their self by not properly replying and trying to run away from everything. The seller eventually just gave the money back without giving information for me to return it.
My memory is too bad to get a time frame, but pretty much everything was in my favor. The product I got clearly wasn't the product advertised.

Interesting. Though, also not surprised. Was the sender's address anywhere in China or Thailand? Hahaha! Regardless, congrats on gaining a figurine for free, even if it was a fake, it's still something. I would display that anywhere, even without a glass-case, and still be fine with it. If it was an official and actual figurine, F`UCK THAT. Glass casing for life. Maybe I'm just extremely annoyed with dust or something, but I don't feel like dusting unless I am dusting the glass casing. :| I have about.. I wanna say 12+ figurines so far, and I'm only displaying 3 that's outside of their casing as of recent. The rest, I've put away because I don't want to put it on my desk or something, and having it collect dust. Makes me buttrage.

Get an air can. Unless you let the dust pile up in thick layers, you should be able to just do some quick spraying every now and then to clear them all up.

Ooh, good idea. I have a couple in my house right now, actually. Never thought about doing that. Some guy on another forum said to use a hairdryer, but set it to COOL. I thought it was a really strange idea, have yet to try, but too risky.

I do this too if there's ever any thick laters, which doesn't happen much to any figure other than the base for my Tengenn Toppa because that's on top of my bookshelf and I don't like going up there so much (caus I need to tiptoe on the edge of my bed for that).
As a last resort, I use a swifter dust pad. I don't even own the swifter stick, I just hold the pad in my hand and gently wipe down the surface that needs dusting, and it does a nice job at picking up most of the dust with 1 light swipe and the rest (if any) on a second swipe.

It's just a shelf that I had a bunch of random monster cans on (Not because I'm a neckbeard but because I thought I was cool by collecting them). So instead I cleared it off and now they just stay there till I not get lazy and get some nice casing for them.

I wouldn't mind getting her, the problem would be the costs and maybe her face. Seriously. The smile really throws me off, because I can never imagine Cirno showing "teeth". It's weird. I'd rate it 7/10, because of the massive head and wide-face too. I do like it, don't get me wrong. Just.. the teeth . . . But besides that, I'd buy it.

Hmm? I think most of us order things from AmiAmi (http://www.amiami.jp/shop/?set=english), among other sites. And for "from Japanese magazines", if you're referring to what Khoi bought, it's just a freebie that comes with the magazine.

Pre-orders for Nendoroid Cirno (http://www.otacute.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1_8&products_id=15367&zenid=pbripkoamhvrs2eqeep9s8bht2), Reimu (http://www.otacute.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1_8&products_id=2438&zenid=gokuole0mf8jovco0k48bstfv7), and Marisa (http://www.otacute.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1_8&products_id=2437&zenid=pbripkoamhvrs2eqeep9s8bht2) are up at Otacute. I got my order for Cirno in earlier...
And these phone straps are amazing, but each set is ~$50, so... I'm going to order a few individually from a club on MFC that splits sets like these. Hopefully I can narrow down and get some that I really want... :x
