Kay, so as the title clearly states, I'm the proud owner of a 6 year-old Dell Dimension 2350. It has given me trouble in the past but I've managed to fix it on my own, but this time I don't have any clue how to remedy it.

Whenever I turn it on, it boots up fine, brings me to my desktop etc. But then shortly after that the whole thing turns off on it's own. Anyone know why? :f4:

I know you're not as clueless as I am when it comes to computers, but my computer would sometimes randomly turn off (maybe two or three times a week) because I didn't have the power cord plugged in all the way.

But to give a better assumption as to what's wrong, I remember you telling me that you don't use any virus scanning programs. There are viruses out there that make your computer reboot randomly. Download norton or something, bitch.

Also, remember when my computer was acting all funny and I resorted to system restoring to the previous day? It worked. Maybe you could system restore to like.. four days ago or something.

Hmmm.. my comp did something similiar before, i believe i had a virus that i got from some email, dad fixed it. So yea it might be a virus of some type. good luck getting that fixed.

Yeah, you think I would've system restored if it would stay on longer than 2 minutes. I can't get anything done if it keeps turning off. Sh'it sucks.

Maybe your power supply is busted

That's what I was leaning on because when I turn it on the fan doesn't seem to work. So, if it was really broken it wouldn't turn on at all, yes?

If the fan doesn't work, it could be overheating too... Theres obviously a lots of problems with your computer, start by using antivirus like avista or avg, or a paid software like kaspersky or nod32

Well, I'll just assume you missed the part about my computer only staying on for 2 minutes so things like VIRUS SCANNING ARE IMPOSSIBLE.

So, with all this said, I'm getting a new computer. F'uck this thing.

The best thing you can do is take it into somewhere like Best Buy to have the Geek Squad look at it, or take it to a local computer repair shop. If you don't think the computer is worth it anymore, do as you said and buy a new computer.

Mines pretty old too so Im looking to buy a new one, but atleast mine stays on. Just.. a lot of other shit doesn't work, lol.

It's auto-shutting off due to overheating (Most PSU's have that feature)

This is a great excuse to get a new computer ^_^

Also, make sure to open up the case and see if there's a bunch of dust and whatnot. Clean that out with compressed air or an air compresser or something.

If it's overheating, that would help a bit. Plus it makes anal people happy or something.

But since you're probably getting a new computer, enjoy. :P

But opening up a PSU (the part that's having issues) isn't that great of an idea

Capacitors hold a huge charge for a very long time, so if you're not careful, you could get electrocuted

My friend (Who's a computer enthusiast and modder) shocked himself by doing that and now he can't feel anything in the finger that got shocked

Yup i would say just buy a new one. Don't bother going to Best Buy or Geek Squad & have them charge you a $50-$100 diagnostic fee :f7: THEY SUCK...I would wait till Black Friday(the day after Thanksgiving) comes around so you can get a really nice PC on sale.

MARK. NEW PC! Seriously. Withdrawals baaaaaaaad and I miss you.

My laptop (also a Dell) used to cut out constantly when it first broke down, it was because the motherboard had died. It used to cut my Internet first and then refuse to turn on. Just a thought, you did suspect the motherboard. My sister's PC is also acting up, she had the same problem, it kept turning off. She called me when she had a temporary solution, and she had vacuumed her PC... :f7: I wouldn't exactly recommend it but she can use her PC again. Hers is an Acer though and really small.

I regularly dust out my computer with compressed air, so I know that isn't the issue this time.

My mind is made up now. Time to finally trash this piece of sh'it. *Kicks it over*

Use speedfan (http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php)
Direct Download link since you keep shutting off (http://www.almico.com/speedfan435.exe)
List of max temps of mnay CPUs (http://www.heatsink-guide.com/content.php?content=maxtemp.shtml)

My intel p4 is currently at 60C, and has a max of 78C, so I'm chillin.
If you see it above 80/90/100 you know there's a problem, on a computer that old I'm assuming p4, which has a max of 78C or Celeron which is 77C

If it is your fan, its a simple $5 replacment part that Dell will ship to you via calling the customer support. If you only use your comp for internet/typing/maple, there's no reason to buy a new one.

Now if its not your CPU overheating (could be your gpu overheating as well), then buy a new computer

GEEKSQUAD USUALLY COSTS CLOSE TO $100 FOR A DIAGNOSES, WHICH IS NEARLY ENOUGH TO BUY A NEW, BETTER COMPUTER!

Call Dell tech support first if anything. They maybe confusing and not helpful, but I've had many problems resolved by them. Just act semi-pissed off, but not totally pissed off.
