View Full Version : Internet's blazing fast, so why is Maple slow?

So I just moved into my college dorm yesterday, and finally today I decided to test out Maple. I was able to successfully log in the first time, but noticed that it took literally anywhere from thirty seconds to two minutes to move from one screen to the next, whereas at home, it never took more than maybe ten.
I brought with me the same laptop I have used to play Maple since last October, so the only thing that has changed is the internet. I am connected by an ethernet cable, so it's not wireless. I haven't moved hundreds and hundreds of miles away-- Nay, I'm only about 130 or so miles from home.
Laptop:
Windows Vista
Acer Aspire 5520-5912
AMD Turion x2 Mobile Technology TL-58 1.9GHz
2.00 GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 7000M / nForce 610M
Internet:

Is there some issue with the University internet service that's slowing me down? It's fast as hell with everything else, but when it comes to Maple, I get so frustrated with its speed (or lack thereof). Is there anything I can do?

Hate to break it to you, but it's probably not your internet. 9 times out of 10, lag in an online game is from your computer itself, be it too many processes running or whatever. If you have something that takes up alot of processor going in the background, it's going to cause lag. I remember this guy used to bitch for hours about the lag in a game I played, and finally we found out that he was running torrents/downloads in the background.
Also, a college dorm may be filtering it. That, and you have to realize...college dorms normally share bandwidth in a certain range or area so you could be getting shorted that way.

It's most likely the latter, considering that I was playing maple yesterday morning in a hotel room perfectly fine. I don't think my computer flubbed up in one day. Thanks, though.

Yeah, it's the network.
College dorm networks are notorious for the bandwidth shaping that they do. (Mostly because everyone is trying to run torrents. >_>) In many cases, the dorm and the rest of the college share the same internet link, which means the dorm network gets throttled during college hours to help prevent all those torrent kids from slowing down the rest of the college.
Two friends of mine have had the same problem as you, and they could fix it by using skype/Ventrilo while they were on MS. The VoIP programs gave them higher priority, or something. I'm guessing you could get better performance on MS in the evening.. but other than that, there's not much you can do. You could try contacting your college network's helpdesk, but they will probably tell you that their network is not filtered and/or that they can't change network rules for your needs and/or that games are not supported on their network. >_>

:S Do you have wireless in the library? I get similar problems but when I goto the wireless in the library, it runs better :S. Test it out at different places on campus ^__^.

Thanks Yoorah and Xl. <3
Yeah, I'm pretty sure they're not going to care about my gaming issues. >_>; I'm guessing your friends have to be connected with somebody while on skype/vent in order to get that priority? *stupid question*
In regards to the wireless: firstly, we've been having a zillion issues with the wireless, lol. Secondly, the library isn't even open. :( They're doing construction on it. e_e I will try, however, to see if I can connect, and from there how it is around the campus. Maybe there's a wireless cafe somewhere around. o_O;
