What was it? If you can remember what the characters are like, or the name of the anime, post it here and share it with us. I remembered watching these when I was in 1st grade and pre-school:

Mukamuka Paradise (1993-09-04 to 1994-08-27)

Is it sad that I remembered the theme song for this? It's been well over 14 years . . . Wow. My childhood flies. ^

Ai to Yuuki no Pig Girl Tonde Buurin (1994-09-03 to 1995-08-26)

So much nostalgia in this thread. I don't know Pig girl, I vaguely remember Time Bokan (don't think I saw much of it, I'll dig through my attic tomorrow to see if I bring up memories), and I was never interested in Slam Dunk. Aside from that, everything else in this thread brings back some memories.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n371zCCYpts

Fuck yes. I still have the VHS tapes from when I was a kid and these were subtitled horribly. This was probably the first anime I got originally in Japanese. Back in those days, getting VHS with crappy subtitles was so awesome. They were so cheap, I ended up with an attic packed with tapes. I wish I still had most of them. Meanwhile my uncle used to buy hentai from there. lol@him accidentally popping La Blue Girl in for me when I wanted to watch Dragonball or Dragonball Z.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gm8cMmWWG7Q

pineapple yes, probably the first romance I've seen. I think I still have the tapes for these two. I don't know if I finished it as a kid though, but I made sure to rewatch the full thing once I got hooked on the internet. Back then, getting anime from IRC channels were pretty much the only way to go. I moved from VHS tapes to internet.

XTOTHEL beats me, lol. I think some of the oldest anime I watched were the two mentioned in my post, along with an anime with uhh Zodiac Animals, and they were living and had magical powers. They travelled through stories like "Cinderella", for example, and defeated an evil villain to restore the story back to the way it should be, or something. I forgot the name of this anime, and I can't find it anywhere online. -siiiigh-

@Kalovale: Uh, dino? Mukamuka Paradise? That's the only thing I can remember, I forgot if it talked or what, but I think it made noises a lot when it runs. It's been a while since I watched it. Mukamuka Paradise link is in my first post.

EDIT ; Googled like for an hour, and there were a ton of Yahoo! questions coming up by different users asking for the same thing. An anime that had 12 Zodiac animals, and this was around the 90's. No one has an answer, I will not rest til I find the name of this anime.

title of the anime that featured chinese zodiac animals (http://www.chinesezodiacsign.net/2010/02/title-of-the-anime-that-featured-chinese-zodiac-animals/)

its probably shown during the 90s. the animals (http://www.chinesezodiacsign.net/category/chinese-zodiac-animals/) travel back through the fairy tales and fix what went wrong to have a happy ending. I couldn’t seem to remember the title.

i want to watch it again and relive my childhood anime memories. thanks.
It’s not fruits basket. It’s an older anime with a rat as their leader in going back to straighten fairy tales and have a happy ending.
sorry, I don’t know
I just wanted to say that that is definitely not Fruits Basket, though the title of the anime that featured chinese zodiac animals intervening with fairytales
the only thing i know thats very similar is fruits basket

By another user asking for the same damn thing. ;~;

Genre: Fantasy (http://anime.fansub.tv/genre.php/Fantasy/)
Year: 1995
Studio: SHAFT

The Eto Rangers ride in Space-Time Transmitting Machine Kirinda to repair the Novel Worlds of Mugen. The Eto Rangers are anthropomorphic animals, each representing one of the 12 Chinese zodiac animals (and The Twelve Branches in Buddhism). In Japan they are known as the Eto animals. The Novel Worlds are stories created by the human imagination, such as old folk tales as well as newer books. These living worlds play out repeatedly, and are necessary for the good of humanity. Princess Aura rules Mugen, which is an island continent hanging over an ocean from the skybound Novel Pole. The Great God Goal gives her power, but she may never leave the small palace island area. Their nemesis is the forgotten Spirit of Cats, Nyanma, who was excluded from the choice of 12 protectors by being disqualified from the race (in actual legend there are many versions of this story). She seeks her revenge by distorting Novel Worlds with Jyarei Monsters.

When a Jyarei Monster goes to a Novel World they alter the story, turning it into a different version, sometimes a parody of itself. Bakumaru, the Spirit of Mice, must use the Genmakyou mirror to reveal ("Jyarei Shouran!") the evil spirit once enough clues lead to its identity. Often the Eto Rangers must play out some of the story to find out who or what it is, sometimes even taking on the role of one of the characters in the tale. After defeating the creature, Kirinda is called when Bakumaru holds up his hand with one of Aura's 12 gems on it and calls out "Daikourin Kirinda!" Kirinda descends from a dimensional slit and purifies the evil spirit with a beam weapon, calling out "Jyouka!" (Purification).

Most of the episodes involve up to 5 Eto Rangers, chosen by the computer's roulette member selection, going into Novel Worlds to repair them, but there is another story going on as well. The Jyarei Monsters are commanded by Jyarei O Nyanma, the Queen of Evil-Spirited Monsters, sitting in her throne in the giant shell fortress in the seafloor ravine. Throughout the series she is watching the progress of the Eto Rangers that foil her plans. She has a grudge toward Aura for a perceived slight years ago. She sends out 4 cat warriors created from herself as well. It is not until later in the series that the overall story, and the past, begins to be revealed in more detail.;~; So downloading this subbed and burning it to DVDs!

Edit; In case you ask, yes, Spidey. This was the anime I asked if you knew about, a while back. So happy I found it though, I'll start looking for subbed episodes and watch during the Summer.

I remember the one with Cinderella pretty well. I think I watched this over in Vietnam when they had it in VHS tapes, I don't recall if it was in Japanese or Vietnamese though, but I somehow understood it, well, sorta. Rewatching episode 1, the mouse reminds me a lot about Naruto (character). Lol.

Then there was a story about Journey to the West too, iirc. It's been a while, but I remembered this being in there!!

PS ; Apparently,
Juuni Senshi Bakuretsu Eto Ranger is 39 episodes . . . <_<; I'll probably find a way to DL all 39 to DVDs during the Summer. I did not know it was 39 episodes, I'm wondering how I watched all of this when I was younger. o__o Because I remember seeing the final episode, heh. Man, so nostalgic.

Is it bad that I started watching Dr. Slump, Thundercats, Silverhawks and that old anime-ish stuff from the 80s first?

Khoi
2010-03-31, 11:26 AM
No. I watched old sh't before most of the newer stuff. Truth be told, while the newer anime these days has nice effects, better plots, and better songs... they're just repetitive. Most of the anime I've watched seems extremely similar, meh. So I go back and watch older stuff from time to time. So ^5@you

Others that are worthy of mention are Cardcaptor Sakura and Pokemon.

I was familiar with Doraemon, Dragonball, and Sailor Moon. Doraemon, I never really got much exposure too, but I was familiar with it, nonetheless; because I saw tons of Doraemon merchandise. Dragonball seemed "weird" to me with the character designs and some of the anthropomorphic characters running around, so it never really stood out to me until years later. Thinking something was weird really made me miss out on a lot in my childhood, come to think of it; and because of it, I missed out on great experiences like the Zelda franchise. And as for Sailor Moon, I felt it was a girl thing, and avoided it like the plague; because to me, it was like a guy being associated to Barbies.

Hi. I just registered on this forum because I wanted to thank Omni for finding out that the anime's name was Eto Ranger! I used to love the show as a kid but I watched it in Korean so I had no idea what the title would be and always looked up "anime chinese zodiac" with no good results until today. I guess the right google search was 'anime chinese zodiac rat fairy tale'! Thanks again~

Oh, no problem! haha! I didn't realize someone would register just to thank a user, I'm surprised. You welcome, and thank you to you too!

Edit ; I hope you manage to find downloads for it too, there's like around 50 episodes or something, and it's hard to find the entire thing on the internet. Mashin Eiyuuden Wataru. Took me a while to find the name of this super robot anime, and it's sort of embarassing to look at the clips now. The kid summons the robot, roller skates up to it and gets teleported inside where he defeats evil by making wild slashing motions with his sword while standing on a disembodied dragon's head. I considered this to be awesome once.

I only saw Doraemon as 3 movies, one is where Doraemon retells Journey to the West, Peach Boy, and an epic one where Doraemon and Nobita assembled a mecha that in Catonese sounded like Santa Claus (Zendacross/Zenda Claus, lol close enough) and the whole gang had to stop a robot invasion.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_l-r7_f0CVs

Epic movie was epic.

This one was already covered, except I saw this all the other cartoons in cantonese

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_NZSevIfPk0

Now name me this anime that I can't find on the list of TVB (Jong Kong TV) imported anime:
1. There is a main hero who has this mecha. I can't remember how he got it. The hero is not an adult. I think young teenager age.
2. He can control the mecha either by blowing into this ocarina/flute, but later controls it by getting in and piloting it
3. It's human-like in the sense it needs energy to function, which is somehow fixed by eating rocks. It also displays a limited amount of sentience because it has a rather human-like face, enough for it to display a small range of emotions.
4. The main bad guys are this brother and sister duo, where the brother has a powerful mecha too, usually more powerful that the hero's. The main villian of the show I can't exactly remember.
5. The hero's mecha received an upgrade when it was somehow wrapped in a cocoon for some reason in which I think several days passed before it emerged as a more awesome version of itself, both in power and in looks. It was a greyish/white mecha who obtained more chromatic colors.
6. Something something something the hero does receive some allies who were initially his rivals of some sort. I distinctly remember one has a blue mecha
7. In one very early episode the mecha was destroying a large forest/field with lasers from it's shoulders because the wind was blowing into the hero's flute/ocarina (which was by his side). This was before he learned he can control/command the mecha by blowing into the flute-like instrument.

Holy crap I can't believed I found the anime! It's called Yamato Takeru, and in Chinese 魔天戰神. Google translates it to "God of War Magic days". :f6:

Both openings. 1st one where you see the blue haired guy with the katana is one of the main bad guys with the superior mech. 2nd video shows the hero's mech after it upgraded in a cocoon.

I found out the anime is loosely based on a Japanese legend, and that the mechas in the anime are called Demon Air War Gods/Dark Sky Warriors and are bio-mechas. The main character's bio-mecha is called Susanoo, who is named after the Shinto God of the sea and storms. Sure is full of mythological/religious undertones in my childhood.

The only pictures of Susanoo I can find, along with another bio-mecha in the show, Tamanoo. It was initially piloted by a bad guy, but later one of the main character's friend pilots it instead.

Oh what the heck, there's a huge ass wiki for the anime: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yamato_Takeru_%28anime%29

Now I just need to find the Catonese dubbed version of the show. I already found the original Japanese one. I'm disappoint it's most likely not subbed nor is it Cantonese, but it's still good enough for me.
